Robbery suspect's attorney says her client was insane

All Dexter McWhite wanted when he got out of jail was to take his
grandkids to McDonald's, according to his attorney.

But he didn't have enough money, and he started drinking, defense attorney Christine Warren said. In the end, he robbed seven stores in 17 hours and wound up naked and unconscious in the woods, attorneys said.

McWhite, 44, of Orlando is on trial in state Circuit Court in Orlando, charged with six counts of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery plus a slew of other crimes from that 17-hour period. Testimony began Tuesday.

The whole thing began about 8:45 p.m. Nov. 17, 2003, at an auto-parts store. McWhite pulled a pearl-handled derringer, asked the clerk for money and got it, Assistant State Attorney Greg Tynan said.

He used the same pistol at his next three stops -- a convenience store and two gas stations -- but then lost it in a scuffle with a clerk, Tynan said.

That didn't stop him, Tynan said. At a convenience store on South Bumby Avenue, McWhite stuck his hand inside a white plastic bag and demanded that clerk Thanh Van Le open the cash drawer, Le told jurors Tuesday.

"I was so scared," Le said through a Vietnamese translator.

But not so scared that he didn't outsmart the robber. Le told the man he didn't have the key to the cash drawer, then took off running, he said. All the robber got was a carton of Newport cigarettes, Le said.

McWhite did get to a McDonald's that day, but not with the grandkids. It was the sixth store he robbed, according to Tynan. This time, he stuck his hand in a brown paper bag, Assistant Manager Ali Garcia said.

Garcia handed over the cash, he told jurors.

Warren told jurors her client was insane at the time and has a history of mental illness. He had been in jail for several months, where he was on medication.

But when he was released two days before the robberies, he had none, she said.

Within hours, he found a gun, she said. His plan was to sell it for the McDonald's trip.

"He does not have much, if any, recall of any of these incidents," she said.

Tynan and Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton said jurors will hear from two or more mental-health experts. Only one concluded that McWhite was insane at the time, Tynan said.

I can get a quarter pounder, chips (sigh...fries), and a drink for $5, or something...I think.
