They're at it again. RIAA Embarrasses self.

Presumably the RIAA has never heard of cassette recorders? It never occured to them that people have been making tapes from the radio for years?

I appreciate that this software divides things up into tracks, but thats no different from making a list of all the songs on a tape.

Satellite radio in recordings row

US satellite radio firm XM is being sued by record labels over a gadget that lets listeners record songs.

The recording industry said XM's Inno device, which stores music and divides it into tracks, infringes copyright.

The lawsuit seeks $150,000 (£79,537) in damages for every song copied by XM customers to an Inno gadget.

XM defended itself by saying that music stored on the device cannot be moved elsewhere and only lasts as long as a customer is a subscriber.

Royalty talks

The Inno device turns a radio broadcast into a download service that resembles Apple's iTunes, said the Recording Industry Association of America in its lawsuit.

The RIAA represents record labels such as Vivendi Universal, Sony BMG, Warner and EMI.

XM said it would defend itself vigorously against the legal action.

It added that the Inno does not let people download music on demand like iTunes and only lets listeners record radio shows as the law has allowed for "decades".

The lawsuit comes after talks between the RIAA and XM on licence agreements for the Inno device broke down.

The RIAA and XM are currently re-negotiating royalty contracts for radio broadcasts.

XM's rival Sirius Satellite Radio recently agreed to pay the RIAA licence fees for its S50 recording device.

Ah yes, I remember the good old days when you just popped a cassette tape in the stereo and made a mixed tape for your bf/gf. No one got their panties in a twist back then.

I never recorded anything on an 8 track but I remember dancing and pretending to sing into a hairbrush to my moms 8 track collection......Donna Summer, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, etc.

" I want some Hot Stuff baby this evening.....gotta have some hott stuff baby tonight.....I want some hot stuff baby this evening.....gotta have some lovin' gotta have some stuff tonight!"

Most MP3 players has a "record" function, which you can use without limitations and can be moved wherever you want. Then again, the makers of MP3 players aren't small businesses, like this Inno thing. Better beat only those who can't hurt us!

Nope, I was too busy in my make shift recording studio. Which consisted of a stereo with speakers about 4 feet high and a shoe box full of cassette tapes. Oh and cute flowery stickers.

Speaking of which, the one place where I have ever experienced the greatest amount of illegal copying of music was in the Warner-Chappell Music Publishing tape room.

Those Bee Gees.....sigh.

My dad had a band back when I was a baby and we traveled on the road. He opened for the Doobie Brothers once. Michael McDonald held me and took me around the swimming pool at the hotel in my baby float. I think he might have been hitting on my mom.

I think the term 'unwinnable' can be applied to the RIAA's case.

IIRC, it would most likely just be the pinch rollers which had disintegrated, leaving the actual tapes still playable if cleaned and placed in new cartridges. Somebody out there does still make new cartridge casings for the die-hard 8-track afficiandos.

Thats a cool experience, huh? What did your father play-guitar, drums?

According to the callendar, I'm 38 yrs old. I often feel much younger than that.

He was the leader/manager and played keyboard and vocals. They did a lot of rock, stuff from the 50's to the 70's. One night he turned off the bottom keyboard and put me on a stool and i would bang on it. The crowd loved it and one drunk said "LOOK AT THAT DAMN BABY PLAY!"

The fact that my parents had me in night clubs at the age of 1 might explain a lot.
