UK will build more nuclear power plants - Official

While the preview of the text of Blair's speech does not reveal a definite 'yes' (that formality will wait until the energy review is released late this summer), this is further confirmation of the signal given when he announced "No decision has been taken" earlier this year - as clear a signal as any supporter of nuclear power could hope for.

Ahead of the speech Mr Blair's official spokesman predicted there would be "despairing shrieks of outrage" in response to Mr Blair's comments.
I can't wait. :D

But a spokesman for environmental group Greenpeace, Stephen Tindale, said: "The prime minister obviously made up his mind about nuclear power some time ago, and certainly well before the government launched its energy review. The review is a smokescreen for a decision that has already been taken."
Ooh, it's starting already. But does that sound like frustrated resignation? :D

I don't see how building a bunch of reactors that won't be operational for five or ten years solves the immediate issues.

Not a whole lot of choice in the short term if you want to keep the lights on in the UK.

If they build the latest models of breeder reactor, as shown recently in Scientific American, they can also burn nuclear waste, and can virtually eliminate the perceived "shortage of nuclear fuel".

It's about time they just got on with it. Nuclear power is clean, cheap, green and efficient. But, despite it being the perfect solution to global warming, you always get people who feel the need to complain. Fortunately, the voice of reason has been heard over foolish hysteria.

So long as the build them far away from the West coast, I don't mind. :D

I wish they'd fix Sellafield fix though before going on to build brand spanking new ones.

It won't, and it's not supposed to. The Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee missed the point with their recent report.

Hooray! My government does something that I approve of!

The environmental campaigners (who I have recently lost all respect for) need to wake up and learn that nuclear is the only practical energy for the future. All of these renewable sources, which, granted have their heart in the right place, need more fossil fuel power to be constructed than they will ever reasonably be able to produce, (buying a wind turbine or solar panel actually harms the environment!). Even with a fleet of JCBs building these nuclear plants and quarrying their uranium the plants will still repay their carbon debt within a decade or two.

Not to mention the scientific investment that comes from nuclear power. It is, as we know, a risky business, which is why nuclear power CEOs invest so much into science to make sure a Chernobyl does take place under their head-offices. And the more research done the closer we are to that holy grail of Nuclear Fission.

You guys should just annex Isle of Man, level all the houses/tows there and make it a super Nuclear power plant capable of lighting up all of Great Britian.

Sounds like a plan?

Is it? Oh, well, that wont do at all. Kick em out, then annex em.

Anyway, what do you mean...in a sense?

Tony Blair backs new nuclear power stattions and opposes animal rights activists. why has he left it so late to adopt sensible policies he has already earned the scron and loathing of middle Britain

Its a Crown dependancy, it is self governing but the Head of State is still the Queen.

Its kinda complex:

So your saying my turn-Isle of Man-into-a-big-nuclear-reactor plan wont work then, huh?

It is an interesting little island though, isnt it. Ever been there?

Well, there's only about 70,000 people there so it probably wouldn't take much to move them ;)

Might work. But then you've got to contend with tail-less cats roaming the power plants.... :D

It's... odd. Flew over it once. But I looked out the other window to see a racing yacht and missed the entire thing :D

Why... yes! Iran and England are the exact same nation in every single way, and my statement was intended to reflect the obvious similarities between English culture, weather and geography with those of Iran.

Its a terrible point.

England is a sane Western not Muslim democracy, while I ran is a insane Muslim theocratic extremist fanatic state which openly calls for the destruction of Israel.

I think you thought wrong.

Well, I'm not here to argue with yet another genius who thinks that Islam is evil... or that the UK is a democracy.

Really, I'm glad the UK is building more nuclear power. Moving away from oil and coal when it comes to electricity is no bad thing.

Thank God.

Yeah, because it's usually as futile and time-wasting as trying to argue with a nazi about Jews. The mind gets into a goose-step of its own, see.

Excellent news. A new generation of clean and cheap power is great for the UK and it's economy (thousands of jobs in construction as well as high tech and other jobs once the plants are complete) and is a bold step towards energy independence. Plus, the stability of nuclear power makes wind/solar/wave-tidal power even more attractive than it was before...and you're helping the economy of uranium producers like Australia or Canada, which is always desirable. The planet also benefits, which is an added plus.

Even better, a windfall like that in the UK promises well for the US nuclear industry; companies are planning a new generation of plants here and a progressive move by Britain will help defeat the selfish NIMBY/BANANA types even faster.

Well, everyone's always developing it. It's not like you reach a certain point and go "Ah! No more development needed." Engineers aren't like that. So yeah, developed, developing still, progress. The way of the west. :)
