Pain Management after wisdom teeth removal

I had 3 of my wisdom teeth pulled today, and i am in a shitload of pain. I was prescribed oxycodone, but i can only take it ever 4 hours minimum, but it hasn't helped very much. I'm supposed to ice it every 20 minutes, leaving it alone for 20 minutes, but that just means slightly less pain. It doesn't help that i'm not supposed to drink water because of the risk of dislodging the blood clots. anyone have any suggestions? please

yeah...wait it out.

Tis the only way...but hey! Bed rest and free pudding/ice cream for another two days, so it's totally worth it! :D

I can't even eat damn icecream or pudding now due to the pain/blood clots, i still taste dried blood in my mouth, and I doubt I can even sleep. It fucking hurts worse than when I sliced my hand open, at least the pain killers they gave me helped.

I was in a hell of a lot of pain after my wisdom teeth were removed too. The medicine worked only a little, ultimately not doing much for me. The only thing I can recommend is that you use this opportunity to develop a higher pain tolerance. That's not very comforting, I know, but it's all I have.

Not a submissive, so I don't think i need to worry about that. I can take pain up front, just not the nagging chronic pain i got right now.

More painkillers.

Get some bags of frozen veggies, preferably peas and carrots. Hold one against your jaw for ~15 minutes at a time, possibly wrapped in a thin towel if it's too cold. Give your cheek a 15 minute break. Repeat.

I had three out at once, I know the pain you're describing. I strongly suggest you throw a few Tylenol 3s at it, then get a canny friend to toke you into oblivion. Hot knives would probably work the best in the given situation.

I had a roomie at the time who manned the acetylene torch in my hour of need. Thank God - the pain was unremitting.

The only thing to do is ride it out. I know that my pain killers didn't work all that well half the time, and the icing only helped a bit, but there's nothing much you can do but wait for the next dose of painkillers, ice as much as possible, and try to distract yourself.

It shouldn't be too long before you can drink water, as long as you don't swoosh it around too much or create suction in your mouth.

If a teenage girl can survive having four dug out at one time, you can manage this! :)

What?

I've been using 2 ice packs on both sides and i just popped an oxy, which is taking its sweet time to give me relief. I don't think I can take apsrin/tyneol (can't spell) until i kill off the rest of the pills.

Ideally youd want a combination of morphine and tylex, but if you cant come by those, god knows. I had glandular fever and the best thing was aspirin, worked better than ibuprofen and paracetamol combined. still couldnt swallow for over a week though. lost a stone. then my stupid friend tells me he had loads of morphine all along, the bastard. what about vicodin or something? codeine? Id just take everything I could find/have brought to me.

I've never been prescribed oxycontin. I was prescribed Tylenol 3s, which contain codeine - I understand codeine isn't prescribed (is it even legal?) in the US, though I'm assuming for the moment you're an American...

Well. Never mind about the prescription pain-killers. Just use what they've given you, there. I still strongly advocate a large intake of cannabis. If nothing else, it'll help you sleep later tonight.

They gave me a whole crap load of vikadin for the pain and ibuprofen for the swelling. I took one vikadin and threw the rest out. I hate vikadin.

so yah, try going through that without any painkillers.

No, trust me - unless there's something medically wrong with you, you do have them. If they haven't been giving you any trouble, it's because you have ample room at the back of your jaw to accomodate them.

Lucky you.

My mom never got her's. That or they grew in in place of other molars or something. Some people are lucky like that. Stupid lucky people...

Welcome to my world. I've lived with chronic pain 24/7 for the last 23 years with little relief. To understate it, it sucks. Be thankful yours is only temporary.

As for advice, if you can't sleep because of it, have a friend take you to the emergency room (shortly before bedtime). Explain to them you are in severe pain and why, what meds your dentist gave you and ammounts, and ask them if there is anyway for them to help you make it throug the night so you can get some sleep. Many doctors and dentists under prescribe pain meds. Some because they underestimate how their patient will react to it (common problem as we all react differently), some think you should just "tough it out," some are afraid of potential law suits, and all of them have the DEA breathing down their necks. Emergency room docs are aware of this and are often willing to help. With luck they will give you a single shot of the good stuff and you'll get a good nights sleep. However, they also might label you a drug seeker and kick you out. But as you have those open wounds in your mouth, there is only a small risk of that. But this is a one time thing!! If you go back for more, you WILL be labled a druggie. So use it wisely to get some sleep.

You can also try calling your dentist and tell him/her that the pain meds they gave you aren't working. Sometimes they will up the dosage or give you a new prescription. If you have a good dentist, they will want you to stay comfortable and happy. Otherwise they could loose repeat business.

That's really about all you can do. Don't take extra of what you have or take other drugs. Either can be very dangerous. For the most part you are just going to have to ride it out.

It honestly didn't hurt me very much -- I took the first Tylenol 3 pill, then nothing. Everyone's tolerance is different.

Only cowards choose to be gassed!

They shot me up and started cutting, no time to wait for the novacaine to kick in when there are 200 other recruits waiting to get theirs pulled as well!

I had bad wisdom teeth-two on the bottom that the crowns opened on. It hurt when I breathed. It hurt more when I tried to sleep, throbbing when I laid down. A dentist refered me to an orthodontist and I got an appointment-IN FOUR DAYS.
The next night, I pulled one myself and most of the other because it cracked and I couldnt get the rest. The orthodontist couldnt believe it and extracted the rest of it with the proper tool in a minute.
The pain afterwards was nothing compared to what it was while they were still in there and I ate a regular dinner that night a few hours later. Both spots healed perfectly and I never filled the prescription he gave me for pain killers.
I still have the teeth and the small, needle-nosed vice grips I heated in a vise and bent to a 70 degree angle to do the job.
