Trenchcoat

I did something rather spectacular today. I wore my long black trenchcoat to school today. It was a rather interesting day. People avoided me at every turn. They gave me looks of fear. Even the teachers were rather wary of me. Liz didn't seem to notice though. But I liked the fear I commanded from everyone. They must've thought I was hiding a shotgun underneath it or something. Of course I wasn't hiding a shotgun underneath it. I was hiding an M4. ;) Discuss what you think of my little "endevour".

were you doing it so people might think you were hiding a gun under it? cuz that's pretty sick. or were you genuinely considering a trenchcoat as a fashion statement?

I wore it because it was comfortable. The fear it commanded was secondary. The trenchcoat is pretty fucking comfortable though.

People act afraid, because a trenchcoat indoors usually says "Hey! Look at me! I've got a gun! Who wants to call the cops?!"

Or, the less severe "I'm a freak with no sense of fashion!"

Honestly, that was stupid, and I'm surprised a teacher didn't ask you to take it off. Don't push it with people.

The latter. Dude, if you wore it, you'd know how comfortable it is. It's orgasmically comfortable. Just remeber, everyone called Bill Gates a freak in school, look where he is now. Most or all of the preppy girls who went to school with him are probably crack whores now.

well after living below 10 celcius for over 6 months 20 is a bit of a shock. i can however tolerate farely extreme heat. i was in cyprus last summer on an archaeological dig and the temp was 36 in the shade. digging trenches in that heat was pretty exhausting coming straight from edinburgh!

Kids at my school wear trenchcoats quite a bit during winter. Theyre actually somewhat practical here because the wind chill is sheer murder, and theres lots of dust blowing around. Hence, 'Dusters'. Hell, Arizona practically INVENTED stlyish trenchcoats.
'Course we kept guns in them to. For to kill cattle rustlers, bank robbers and theivin' Mexicans, of course. Oh, and Irish people as well. And Irish-Mexicans. Oh, and Canadians. And Injuns. And Vietnamese. And...well...basically everybody except protestant white males of Anglo-Saxon descent.

Don't really see an appeal in trenchcoats. I guess it got worn out by the trenchcoat fad during my freshman year. Also, I live in Texas, you don't EVER need to buy a jacket. 12 months of pure summer my friends!

I don't see the problem, I wore mine all the time when I was back home in cool weather.

Though I admit that it was fun confusing the hell out of people who saw someone at 6'2" all in black, blach trenchcoat, black sunglasses, and giving people a nice friendly smile and a wave. People who didn't know me had this look on their face of "Ok, if I smile back and he WON'T attack me or he WILL attack me?"

*sighs* Ah the fun of those days before I got a personal fashion assitant who forbid the wearing of all black.

Gates was a freak because of his nerdyness and his brains. Wearing a trenchcoat does not put you into either catagory

I am not condemning you for wearing it even though I would not do it myself (at least not indoors)

You wore a trenchcoat today?! It must have been a lot cooler in Fairfield than it was in Sacramento today, because it was damn near 100 degrees where I live.
Which is one of the many reasons I say, "Sacramento sucks." (grew up around there)

A trenchcoat can be amazingly practical with all the pocket room, and quite comfortable. I approve of wearing them everywhere, much like I approve wearing cargo pants everywhere.
I agree, especially about the cargo pants, very useful.

Yeah, so it's in the mid-80s (F) in Fairfield these days. I don't think people where so much afraid of you as wondering why you where wearing such a big coat after the warmer weather finally started.

I wore a long coat for years, not to be moody or frightening but because I liked Film Noir, really. I still wore black ones (I had a swede one, a thin canvas one, a nice twill (I think) one I still have) because I didn't like the color of the other ones (Inspector Gadget sorta ruined it). I would get comments now and then but I don't think people where really afraid of me.

To be honest, I don't think your coat was making people all that scared. First of all, these people all already know you. If they've already been teasing you, they know they can 'take' you. It doesn't take too long of watching someone in a long coat to rule out the 'hiding guns' thing. If you are a little bit of a spazz, then it might be reasonable to think you'd go Columbine on them, but that's about it. And really, that's a fear that you are even more of twirp than they already think you are.

Like I said, I wore one for quite a while (until I got a motorcycle-I've never been one to have more than one jacket since I live in California) and it's kinda nice, like wearing a blanket. I dug it. I got a little tired of being called Silent Bob, but meh. I think that the 'fear' thing was in your head. I'm a big dude and have scared people in the past (until they spend 15 seconds talking to me and realise I'm nothing to be afraid of) but I think that if the coat had any effect on that it was minimal at best.

You're trying too hard. That might be the source of people thinking you're a bit off. (I'm just going by what people have posted about you whatnot, I haven't been following your arc here...)
