That's right, between the 6th and 11th of July me and a group of friends are hitting the wonderful and vibrant city of Amsterdam, and I was hoping anybody (be they locals, experts, fans, drug tourists, what have you) could help me out with a few things. Yes this is probably very lazy of me but most people on here seem to be friendly/helpful/filled with god-like powers (or so they'd have you believe).

My friend who's currently looking into accomodation wants to stay in the red light district. Now, call me a reactionary but I don't particularly fancy sleeping in the area frequented by perverts who want to have hookers punch them in the balls for money. Could anybody whose been reccomend a hotel they've used outside the area?

That reminds me- what area of the city contains all those wonderful cafes I've been hearing about?

Which further reminds me- do you think it's worth me getting a false ID (a good one) for this trip or are most places pretty relaxed? I'm 17 and will be 18 about 2 weeks after the trip ends. Sadly I look about 15.

Anybody have any tips/ suggestions for places to go, things to see, places to smoke, places to drink?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Well, if they're being strict they'll just ask for your passport. If they're not, they probably won't care, so you can just tell them what you want when they ask.

Staying inside the red light district is not the best idea. Too many dark alleys with people waiting for tourists like yourself (no offence). There are a few youth-hostels around I believe you could find cheap and reasonably okay (though, while being dutch, I've only been to amsterdam twice in my life).

There is often a difference between tourist coffeeshops and the regular ones, though they do tend to gravitate towards each other. Can't help you about the fake idea, but if it's nice weather out, sitting in the park and quietly smoking a few there can be alright as well, you don't to get inside a coffeeshop per se, just have one of your friends go (though some shops will probably just look the other way).

That's about all I can think o now, little drunk...

If you're planning on staying in Amsterdam, no difference. They're pretty much overrun with tourists.

Sorry about that.

I promise I'll clean up after myself.

Last September I stayed in the Flying Pig hostel near Vondel Park. It was OK, about 15 minutes walk from the coffee shop area. There were plenty of trams going past too.

Best way to do that (not that I did it, oh no...), colour scan your passport at a really high level, change the date of your birth on the photo (easy enough to do). Make a decent print off of it and laminate it. It'll look official enough to fool most people.
