Who Will Win Eurovision?

Philosopy

It's almost that time of the year again, where television is taken over by mad pop groups dancing the funky chicken all night long. So who do you think will win, and what do you think of the contest?

The British entry this year is awful. Embarrassingly so. So bad I think I'll just hide behind the sofa and cringe. However, this being Eurovision, the fact it's so bad means it's probably in with a good shot.

No poll I'm afraid, as there are too many countries. Just post what you think.

@Below: Right. I'll have to check out the link tomorrow then. It should work - as it has before - but it is being all funky with errors and asks me to report them. Only problem is, it asks for my e-mail. I'm so lazy / paranoid.

The Finnish entry is so crap it must be good. Don't Finland have to go through the semi-final though?

Malta always seem to do well, they're a good bet to do well (and at 80-1, they're a bloody good each-way bet). Otherwise the ex-Soviet bloc will dominate as per usual, due to sycophantic voting. Germany and Spain might be the surprises this year.

How can you not love a group of people who won't enter public without their monster suits on and even then they refuse to speak because they are monsters after all. Remember: Monsters cannot talk.

Finns unite to pay for Lordi’s Eurovision explosives

Finland’s entry to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’ by the monster rock group Lordi, is set to make a big bang – thanks to the Finnish general public, who mounted a spontaneous grassroots campaign to finance the pyrotechnics required for Lordi’s stage show.

Fire and explosions have always been a big part of the Lordi experience and the band had planned to highlight its performance at the Eurovision Final in Athens on 20 May with particularly elaborate pyrotechnics. So elaborate, in fact, that it turned out that the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) could not foot the bill alone. There was even a possibility that Lordi would have to cancel their trip to Athens altogether.

However, Lordi’s many Finnish supporters would not let that happen. As soon as the news broke that Lordi’s Eurovision show was in jeopardy, dozens of Finnish organisations and even private citizens volunteered to pay for the explosives. Among the contributors were two of Finland’s largest heavy metal festivals, Tuska Open Air and Sauna Open Air.

“No one actually asked anyone to send their money,” says Kimmo Valtanen, managing director of Sony BMG Finland, Lordi’s record company. “But people did anyway. That is another example of the kind of popular support that this Eurovision campaign has enjoyed. It’s as if the whole of Finland will be with Lordi in Athens.”

No-one is going to win Eurovision. I predict that this is the year when all the contestants get mass murdered. It's going to be really messy. Some unfortunate guy in the audience will become insane due to the screaching of the british singer (don't know who it is this year, don't really care) which will become one of our nations greatest acheivements, ending the Eurovision. Then he will pull out his shotgun from beneath his stylish trenchcoat (yeah, they're cool) and it is dicovered that everyone is in fact singing, dancing zombies and you're not watching eurovision but Resident Evil the musical. Or something. I can't really think of a better ending. I guess I'll never make it as a screen writer. Oh well...

I missed the contests itself, but got in front of the TV just in time to see the short clips of all songs and I can only say that each and every one of them, excluding Lordi, sucked some major balls. They were undescribably awful. If Lordi doesn't win, some one better bomb the place.

Lordi does seem to enjoy a lot of public support. On a Swedish newspaper's (Aftonbladet) webpage was a vote where 39% of the votes went to Lordi (they got the most). Also on BBC's site Lordi had 70% of the votes. Don't know how much Finnish IRC community has affected those though.

If Lordi won, there might be a chance through all Europe so that everyone figures out that the normal Eurovision music is not something that people like. All those other songs sounded just like eachother, nothing to distinguish one from the rest.

Perhaps next year we could hear all kinds of performances, not just sucky ones. I don't think Lordi is that good compared to all available music, but among the Eurovisioneers they really do stick out above them all. There has to be change and I hope Lordi is the pioneer of that change.

Even though I do think Finland is totaly awesome, I dont think they are going to win: The vote isnt won by Swedish or UKian polls, after all. It is the Balkan (and south eastern Europe) that matters!
So for the winners, I reckon it will be Russia or Romania. Possibly Ukraine.

Personally, I really liked Slovenia too. But they are out already.

And I thought Andorra did quite well yesterday (even thought the CD-version of their song totally sux almost as much as Ireland's)

The Eurovision is a political joke. Being Irish I am completely shocked that we got through. You think that song is bad? There were only three options, Brian Kennedy ballad, Brian Kennedy ballad, or Brian Kennedy ballad. The Irish public chose the one written by Brian Kennedy so that they wouldn't have to buy an extra plane ticket...

As for the UK entry, I actually think it'll do ok. At least okay by UK standards, as in I don't think you'll be getting 0 points. What I don't like about it, though is that you can play the Black Eyed Peas' 'Where is the Love' over it. Don't believe me? Try it. Complete plageurism. That song was hugely successful but because there's only one rapper, and Justin Timberlake has been replaced by a bunch of 'schoolgirls' not so many people will make the connection. Oh and I hate the fact that no matter how terrible the UK's song is from the previous years they automatically qualify. Same goes for France, Germany and Spain.

And the winner is? It'd be funny if it were 'We Are The Winners of The Eurovision' because by this year's standards that is actually one of the better songs. But surprise, surprise it'll be an Eastern European country... again.

I'm really hoping that Ireland cop on and show some ingenuity by becoming the first country to pull out of Eurovision because of all this 'voting for the neighbours'. We're an island, dream on, we'll never, ever win again.

Eurovision has turned into Eurotrash. 90% of the acts are women wearing the next barely there/ridiculous costume... At least Finland are a little original, even if they're copying Star Trek/Predator/The Lord of the Rings....

Belarus gave 12 points to Russia.
B&H gave 12 points to Croatia.
Bulgaria gave 12 points to Greece.

When you think about it, Finland is ideally placed to pick up votes, both from the Scandinavians and also from the Baltic countries and Russia. It's a surprise they've never picked up a win before.

There's one thing that gets my goat though. In sports apart from the Olympics the UK hamstrings itself by taking part in its constituent countries, but when it comes down to something like the Eurovision song contest when it would be actually beneficial to be split up, and where Andorra's vote carries as much weight as Russia's we have to enter as one country. Bah!

I've noticed some strange things on the BBC news website. Under the picture of Lordi it says "Finland's Lordi took heavy metal to the Eurovision stage" and in an earlier article they actually called them "death metal"!

You'd think the fact that they are actually hard rock might be given away a bit by the fact that it's in the title of their song...

To exasperate the problem, folks call 'em "Melodic Rock". Whatever that's suppose to mean. Music is supposed to melodic, that's the whole point.

I'm really hoping that Ireland cop on and show some ingenuity by becoming the first country to pull out of Eurovision because of all this 'voting for the neighbours'. We're an island, dream on, we'll never, ever win again.

I never heard any bitching over the fact that the UK always gives us twelve points. A slight double standard, eh?

Get real. We lost because our song was crap and bland. Lordi won because their song was unique (for the eurovision) ever though it was crap.

Also, I'm slightly impressed with the Irish public on this. 10 points for Lordi and 12 points for "We are the winners"? We've finally grasped the idea that it's only a bit of fun, and we should vote for the most amusing. Long may it last.

I wasn't implying that Ieland's song was in anyway good or deserved to win this year. I am completely shocked that we came tenth allowing us to qualify for next year. Ireland, or rather the people who organise our act, still haven't caught on that while also being political (although if we can come 10th with that maybe all hope isn't lost!) it's also a question of who can put on the best, or in Finalnd's case, strangest and funniest act. I mean we had a guy with a guitar, 3 'oh so hot' backing singers, and Brian, who squatted for half the song... I'm really, really shocked by that outcome. Like you I'm thrilled with the Irish voting, though; at least the Irish people have a sense of humour, if not the Irish Eurovision organising committee.

Well done to Finland, though. In my opinion the song wasn't that great and I couldn't make out what they were saying, but it doesn't matter because I thought that they were hilariously funny. The wings were just priceless! It was either them or Russia or Boznia Herzegovina, so I'm with Finland all the way!

But think about it, now that Lordi showed that the way to win Eurovision is NOT to send another crappy teen popper or a folk singer with a sappy love ballad, maybe next Eurovision won't be as embarassing.

Maybe next year Eurovision will finally be something you can watch without sacrifing either your sobriety or sanity. One can only hope.

For death metal at least, the "melodic" tag makes sense, as it shows that the song in question has a tune rather than sounding like chug chug chug chug GRAAAGHHHH!!!!!!. Of course it usually means chug chug chug chug GRAAAGHHHH!!!!!! with an extra three notes in the chorus.

Turkey and Russia are at least partly in Europe.

Israel is in the middle east, and therefore Asia.

But still, if a country like Algeria decided to ask if they could join, I've no doubt they'd be allowed to try out. After all, why would they want to actively keep anyone out? Surely, they'd figure something out.
