The Chain mail Discussion Thread

Today I've been reading on some Urban Legends, and it just so happens I got a chainmail about a girl being skinned alive, then the parents were skinned alive by a vengeful spirit and oddest part, if I didn't send it to another person in an hour, I would be killed by the parents. Four hours have passed, and it finally popped into my head.

Why do people do these things? Is it boredom? Or are they getting a kick out of making others frightened? I for one, was slightly frightened when I first read it - and this is me. I took two slashes from a knife from two different people and was willing to get shot without any fear going through my body.

Yet this fear was purely psychological.

Any body else get that chainmail? The Death Chain of 'Smith Sisters anonymously murdered'?

What forces people to make these things?

They're bored?

Once as an experiment, I released one into the wild. It came back to me about a year later with a sob story about some dead girl in Norway and how she wants to live forever with eletronic hugs. If I didn't pass it on...

People are silly sometimes.

I think it is mostly boredom that inspires it. Or they malquote a news report, and are stupid enough to believe what they think they just heard.

But you believed it for a while? Why? How? When? Waldo?

You've just been hit by a random act of senseless kindness. Please send to 10 random people and make someone's day brighter.

A year later, I got the hugs part back, but the story had been changed to how this was the dying wish of some little girl in Norway, and how she felt that hugs always made her feel better, no matter that she was dying of something (it never said what). So she started emailing eletronic hugs and now it is up to us to keep her hugs alive on the 'Net by sending it to 30 people, if you don't grave misfortune would occure. Then it went on to list the misfourtunes.

I found it very funny because (AFAIK) I have not died, I have never lived or stepped foot in Norway, and I am NOT a girl.

There are lots of chain mail forwards that talk about having started a hundred years or more before the internet was invented. They get on my nerves, too. Then again, ALL forwards get on my nerves. I follow Strong Bad's rule and never read anything that has more than 1 "Re:" or "Fwd:" in the title, and even then I don't read it if it sounds suspicious, such as "You've seen it on TV!" or "Thought it was worth a try!"

I also, was ready to discuss the kickassedness of chainmail, especially the enchanted elven kind.

On topic- They used to be called "chain letters" in the days before email. And since you had to snail mail them all, I think they were a government conspiracy designed to inflate post office revenue.

There is a website that debunks all these urban legends, chain letters, etc. I forgot what it was- but I am sure someone here will be nice enough to post it for us...

Yeah, me too, except the historical stuff. My uncle had some. You ever see someone wearing chainmail and then have an irresistable urge to stab them to see if it works? I haven't, I've just been wondering if curiosity killed the chainmail wearer.

Indeed. It has been said by the philosophers that: "were there a God, he would truly be so awed by my level of inhuman perfection as to forsake the capitalization of his "G" to me, making me G'Fiddlebottoms."
Or something like that. Said philosophers were a bit drunk at the time, so they didn't quite make sense.

Chainmail armour is the best - high mobility, heavy density, nice protection even against some blunt weapons, piercing weapons can't through the rings. Only problem: Cattleprods! ZAP ZAP ZAP!

But yeah, I kinda hate Chain mails...

the ones I hate the most are:
Make someone happy! (<- this is good)
If you do! you will get xxx (<- this is bad)

Now why is that?

Because making someone happy is always a good thing.

However, expecting something from making someone happy should not happen. Ever. When you make someone happy, that's it, the reward is - They're happy. You WON'T get a girlfriend, you WON'T win the lottery, all your dreams will NOT come true. What WILL happen hopefully is that someone out there will become happy. Not you. THEM! stop being damn selfish you stupid chain letters!

We should start a NS Gen Chainmail! It would go along the lines of "If you don't sing up for NationStates and send this email to 30 people within the next ten minutes you will die a horrible gruesome death where you testicles are blended while still attached to your body"

But then we'd get a bunch of retards who actually do it:eek:
