How old are you really?

Ilie
15-05-2006, 00:09
Here it is: www.realage.com

It calculates how old you "really" are based on your risk factors, behaviors, environment, gender, nutrition, exercise, etc.

I am literally 23.9, but this says I'm 29.3 (I think the number reversal is a coincidence). I have some things working in my favor, and a lot of other things working against me. I like the detailed profile of stuff I can do to fix it.

About the site:
- the test takes a little while
- you have to give them your email and make up a password to get in, but you get results right on the site so you can probably make up a fake email unless you want to go back and update it when you get more information
- you don't pay for anything as far as I can tell

Anyways, about me...

The good things making me younger:

Good sleep levels
Ideal BMI
Safety belt or airbag usage
Nonsmoker
Low red meat intake
Daily breakfast
No ovarian cancer in family
Vehicle size
No drinking and driving
Education level

The bad things making me older:

Secondhand smoke exposure
Flossing habits
Low vegetable intake
Low fruit servings
Daily vitamin
Low unsaturated fat
High resting heart rate
Lack of flexibility exercises
Workout schedule
Potassium levels
Low grain intake
Low omega-3 intake
Folic acid intake
Family history of breast cancer
Cell phone use
Driving speeds
Oral hygiene concerns
Blood pressure control
Lack of diversity in diet
Calcium intake
Vitamin E intake
Vitamin C intake
Have cholesterol level measured
Social network and stress
Strength training level

...it's basically saying I don't eat so great and don't get much exercise (plus other stuff), but at least they're specific about it.

It sucks that they won't let you go back and add a poll (if I can do that and I'm an idiot, please tell me how to do it.) I meant to ask people to post if they're younger or older than their regular age, how much so, and what you plan to do about it.

I think I'll start walking more for exercise and maybe eat more veggies. (So, do tomatoes count?)

A lot of the things making me older, though, are vitamin-related, and I get plenty of vitamins from my diet, so I don't take supplements for them because I don't need them. They should do more research before coming up with those numbers. Geez, I could really be 15! And too much sleep? I get all the sleep my body needs. >.<; Stupid test.

Having a strong faith, strong enough to visit a place of worship once a week or more, helps your psychological youth, I believe. They don't take into account a lot of "What about None of the Above?" answers to questions.

However given that I eat breakfast almost every day, (I miss very rarely) why does it say:

Lack of daily breakfast

on the negative side? The options were 2-5 times a week or 6-7 times a week. Now when I miss it is usually for two or three days in a row so I chose 2-5. Now apparently this means I do not have a daily breakfast.

Well, my main problems are that I don't sleep enough, and I only eat about once a day. Also, my exercise habits are sporadic at best. Especially during school, and since I'm taking summer classes they'll remain that way. Ugh, tomorrow I have class from 10-3:50 and then I work from 4-12:30. And then class from 10-3:50 again the day after.

That, and it doesn't like my car. You get bitched at for having a large gas hog, and then this thing tells me I'll die quicker if I have a small car. Can't win either way, I guess.

I don't put a lot of faith in this test.

It claims my 'real' age is 33, four years less than my actual 37.

This, however, is despite asking me whether or not I have cancer, and my answering in the affirmitive with leukaemia, which was one of the specific options offered.

It didn't try to distinguish between leukaemias - and the difference between acute and chronic leukaemias has a significant impact on lifespan - but even leaving that difficulty aside, I find it rather ironic that my 'real' age is supposed to be 33 when, more likely than not, I'll be dead before I'm 50.

Sorry to be a bit of a downer there - I'm usually more optimistic about my condition that this suggests - but it does suggest the test has more than its share of flaws.

I think they weight some things far too heavily.
I was going along at 2.5yrs under my natural age until I got to the page that asked about stressful events. I put in that I had moved within the last 12 months and that pushed my 'real age' up to 2 yrs above my natural age!
How can moving be that stressful that it takes 4 years off your life?
If that's true, I should be dead already. I've moved 20 times in my life. That means I should have a body of a 110yr old.
It doesn't take into account whether the move was stressful or not. Yes it was a bit stressing the whole move, setting up again thing. But I moved from the most densely populated place on Earth (Mong Kok in HK) with 24/7 traffic and pollution to a small island off HK where I have a balcony, a view of the harbour and there's no vehicles on the island. I'm woken up by frogs and birds in the morning now, not cars, buses, trucks and people shouting at each other.
So I'd argue not moving would be more stressful in this case.
This is why I dislike these on-line quizes. They need to be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

Wow, I didn't think this thread would still be alive. Looks like that test has some glitches, such as assigning people a dog when they don't have one  and not distinguishing leukimias (I'm sorry you'll die so soon...ugh, what a terrible thing to say...I don't know). I guess I like it because at least you can choose one unhealthy thing you do that you might not have known was all that bad, and change it for the better. As for the crappy inconsistencies...eh, it's just an online test. See a doctor if you want something more specific.
