What makes a good sandwich? Not just any old sandwich mind you, but one of those sandwiches worth writing home about..... I would think it would have to start with a variety of meats and cheeses, (pepper Jack is always a good starting point)

Your thoughts?

Red Liecester cheddar, with some smoked, honey-roast ham, with some pickle and salted butter, in a ciabatta, with some really good salad makes a fantabulous sandwich.

I think if you are going to put vegetables of some sort, like tomatoes or lettuce, make sure they are perfectly placed, so they don't wreck the whole darn sandwich, making it slide right off the bread.:)

I dont think I have tried Red Liecester cheddar. What is the difference from normal sharp cheddar (or is that just a company name)?

The sauce is what makes a sandwich great, without a good gravy or dressing you can only do so much. The type of sauce, of course, depends on what else all is in the sandwich, though it is hard to go wrong with a vinegar or horse radish base.

Bread, a linseed rye, coarsely cut.

Then, in order:

Fresh mayonnaise.

Light sprinkling of fresh-ground cracked peppercorns.

Thickly-sliced Beefeater tomato.

Leaf lettuce, or Boston lettuce.

Salami... Hungarian, mustard-seed, Bag Summer, or Thuringer. Any will do.

Cheese... old Cheddar, flavoured Havarti, smoked Provologne, or any sharp cheese, really.

Mustard.

Topped with another coarsely cut slice of linseed rye.

Et voilĂ .

Urmm it's just more orange and has a slightly less sharp flavour. I prefer it because the taste is also slighty... I dunno... smoother.

My personal kitchen slaves make good sandwiches. If they don't, I kill them.

Lets see if I can remember it:
Working from the bottom up..
Half a large stottie (a type of white breadbun native to NE England)
Crisp lettuce, with a little rocket for flavour.
4 1/4lb burgers, grilled, medium rare
several slices of farm shop double gloucester cheese, allowed to melt before adding the next layer
more lettuce
fried tomatoes
several rashers of lean bacon, fried just the moist side of crispy
hp sauce
yet more lettuce (keeps things from mixing)
3 fried eggs, sunny side up
top with the other half of the stottie

Serve simply, with a glass of water on the side. ;)

good bread (i like sourdough; pump rye for reubens)

good, thin-sliced meats and cheeses

quality produce

MAYO or CREAMY ITALIAN or RANCH dressings (i don't like dry sandwiches, and i abhor mustard)

here are some of my favorite sandwiches:

Grilled Pastrami Reuben:
- Pumpernickel Rye bread
- Thinly sliced pastrami, piled high
- Slice(s) Swiss cheese
- Sauerkraut
- Sauce mixture (1000 Island and mayonnaise), applied liberally
*GRILL, Cuban-style (try to flatten it just a bit without spilling everything out the sides), until the bread is toasted, the meat is at least warm, and the cheese is melted or melting.

Roast Beef on hoagie/sub roll:
- Shaved roast beef
- Provolone or cheddar
- Creamy Italian (with provolone) or mayonnaise (with cheddar)
- Shredded lettuce
- Coupla slices of tomato
- Pickles, maybe (depends on my mood)

Ham and Cheese (on white bread or kaiser roll, i guess)
(If cold, add mayo)
- Lots of sliced ham
- Lots of cheddar and/or swiss cheese
- Lettuce and tomato if I feel like it -- certainly not if it's grilled

Turkey: same as ham

Chicken Salad:
Mix: chunk chicken, mayonnaise (plenty), celery, salt, pepper
Pile the chicken salad onto good white sourdough bread, and top with provolone/lettuce/tomato (any, all or none of those).

and a curveball:

Turkey/Pastrami Zinger (in a sub roll, warmed)
- Sliced pastrami
- Sliced turkey
- Lettuce
- Tomato
- Oil
- Lots of mayonnaise
- Cheddar and Swiss
- Italian herbs

If it's going to be a decent sandwich then it must must must be cut triangularly. All sandwiches taste better when cut triangular. Just like drinks taste better from a can.

I don't think that beer tastes better from a can (I like it bottled)... but juices and sodas certainly do.

Soda just seems colder when it's canned than it is when it's in a plastic bottle. (should do an experiment)

That's because the metal of cans is a conductor, so you get added coldness from the cold can touching your lips, whereas plastic bottles are an insulator, and as such, the bottles are about room temperature, which makes the drink seem warmer.

And of course you get that extra metallic twang that you jsut don't get with bottles. Maybe beer doesn't go well with metal (I've noticed too that alcohol is the exception to this rule).

Although, drinks from glass bottles as opposed to plastic also taste pretty damn good.

One of two options:

Cheddar cheese (mature, obviously) with Parma ham, in some kind of granary bread. All extremely thick (slices of cheese, layer of ham, and bread). Thin spreading of mayonnaise.

Brie and bacon. Brie, crispy bacon, white bread.
:D
