Advice on Non-IPod MP3 players

I've been looking around for an MP3 player of 2GB capacity or more for my Birthday and I wondered if any of you here could give some advice. The only thing I will say is that I do definitely NOT want an IPod. Those things are all over the place and I am sick of them. I'd like to have something a little more original.

Seriously, I don't know what's up with stand-alone MP3 players. If you want to listen to music, just use a phone. My XDA can hold as much as an Ipod with an appropriate memory card.

Thats what I used to use, with the Nokia 3300 and N70 but they cant handle more than 512MB and an XDA is a little too big for me.

I don't see what everyone's problem is with iPods (I have one and I wouldn't get anything else, no matter how "everywhere" they are), but Creative makes some good ones, as well as iRiver. Just go to a large-chain electronics store and ask them what they have in the way of MP3 players, or go to the website of a large chain store and search it. I don't know what stores are in your area/country, though, so I can't help you find one, but it's not so hard to go to the websites of a few and look at their MP3 Player sections, which most have these days. :)

I have a 512 MB Creative Zen Nano with a screen. It cost me $70. I could've gotten a 512 MB Apple IPod Shuffle, sans screen, for $99. As with most things made by Apple, there comes with the IPod a premium otherwise not present in competing media players.

I'd say don't go with Sony. I recently replaced my Creative Zen something-or-other with a Sony and the software is plain awful. Clunky, slow, clumsy, slow, did I mention slow?

You get what you pay for in MP3 players, unless you get one with a manufacturing bug, which is pretty rare.

Why do you need a replaceable battery, when you can easily get 12 hours of playback on the battery in it, and you get an insane amount of full-charges (As in 0 battery power to full) before it even starts to consider wearing out? You can also get external batteries and other accessories that recharge your battery without having to plug it into your computer for a decent price. I'd think that having to replace a battery would be more annoying than having a great one built in.

Samsung and Creative make some funky MP3 players as well as iRiver. See if you get a 2Gb iRiver.

My iPod mini recently fucked up. No battery left and won't charge. Fucker.

However, I really liked it when it did work so I'm considering buying another and treating it a little better this time. Not too sure though.

Yeah my Ipod has been fucking great, only the battery is getting worse and worse. It now barely lasts a day of solid listening at uni. Apple charge some huge amount to get them changed, too.

Three reasons, its much more expensive, can't fit as many songs (20gb memory cards aren't common yet) and much harder to use (ie. navigating songs, organising).

I personally have a Rio Carbon, fantastic player thats done me great. Company went under so hard to find, but its universally recognised as one of the best players.

It's not really all that high, considering the price of an iPod lately.

If your iPod, iPod with color display, U2 iPod, or iPod mini requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $59, plus $6.95 shipping.

So $66 bucks to get a new battery installed, including shipping and labour fees. Better than getting a new battery in my old cell phone!

That's a fucking rip-off. I'd just buy a battery and put it in myself. I bet you could get one for at most half the price Apple will do it for you.

I'd recommend a U3 or a U2.(iAudio) Great sound! Get some good plugs though, I hear those you get are worthless. U2 I have, and I'm sure you can get a 2 gig version of that one. U3 has colour screen, movie support and all kinds of other cool things, but it's more expensive. Plus they look gorgous.

That's probably why Apple design their iPod in such a way, to make more $$$ from iPod breakdowns.

I took my iPod to them, and for like $60, they just gave me a new iPod o_o.

'Course, I'd defend Apple to the death. My house has been Apple-friendly since the first Macintosh came out in the eighties :X.

Creative lets the consumer change the battery themselves, plus the new battery only costs 20-30 bucks I believe. Very nice.

I have the Creative Labs Zen Vision: M. (30GB)

It costs the same as an iPod, but it holds about 15,000 songs.

It claims to have 14 hours of playtime for audio, but I mess with the controls so much, so for me, 8 hours is more accurate.

It also comes with both a power and synch adapter (I thought I heard someone say you have to buy it separately for the iPod, but don't take my word for it).

The only thing I don't love about it is the software, you don't have drag and drop capability like iTunes. You have to go through the menu or icons to load songs, but all in all, I'm really happy with my decision.

You may want to compare MP3 Players on www.CNET.com, they're very accurate with their reviews and rated the Vision:M very highly.

You know what them being everywhere means? They are so easy to get support for. There are hundreds of support forums for iPods, but only a handful for others like Creative.
