Ok all you Techie types, I need some answers, and you the brilliant minds of NS General may be able to help.

I play a particular mmorpg, and a while ago, bought a new graphics card to enjoy it at its fullest, or as close as I can get.
Recently, however, I lag so bad, I have to play the game at its lowest settings, and still lag pretty bad.

Today, I purchased 2 gigs of pc3200 400 mghtz ram.

No better..

My ISP bandwith is a over 2 gig.

System Stats:

P4 Prescott 2.4 gig processor.
Asus p4p800s board
2 gig Infineon PC3200 400 mghtz.
GeForce 6800s 256 MG graphics card.
80 gig serial ata HD.

So, as you can see, while not an Alienware system, its still a decent gaming machine.
However, lately this damn game is almost unplayable.

Ive recently updated all the drivers, except for the latest version of motherboard BIOS.

What the hell could the deal be?

*snip*

Did your problems start after you installed your new card?

Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the game?

Do other players on the same server have lag problems too?

Do you have lag problems with other (online) games?

Well, I would suggest to uninstall and reinstall the game then.

I don't have any other ideas at the moment, sorry.

Yeah, thats my next step.
Problem is I have a dvd copy, and dont actually have a dvd rom.
Had to buy it when it came out, as they didnt have the cd version.
So to re-intall it, I have to borrow a dvd drive from someone.

Its annoying, really. I built this damn machine myself explicitly for this purpose.

Sigh.

You could of course download it from somewhere.

I would go and purchase a spanking new dvd+-rw, they're pretty cheap nowdays. I would also get a second HDD for storage. Then I would format the whole drive, install windows again, a good antivirus and a firewall, then update the shit out of absolutley everything for about 24 hours, run a spyware hunter like Pest Patrol and then re-install the game and hope for the best:) Depends on the game you're playing I guess... is it that huge one by blizzard perhaps? Kind of hard to know exactly what to do without the hardware reqs for the game...

We are good at everything, however in our Beatified Country use of these evil machine is not recommended.
Electricity is not yet install in all cities a part the embassies district where anything (and more) can be used (only by ambassadors).

We are a bit astonished to see people use the "computer", we never had and will never have a "computer".
We understand you f*king mouse is not fully compatible with the game you play with and the "internet" (what's that crap?) is too fast for a decent player.
Should you consider to try another game and join our forces to convert all realms around to surrender to our Scriptures?
That a game with no bloody f*king stupid cards.
Remember we Jesuites are the fathers of your children.

Now let's pray, brothers, for the rest of a nice expensive piece of crap of a computer, amen.

Defrag your hard drive - since large game installs tend to run faster if their files are not scatters over 100 places. RAM and video card are fine, but the P4 2.4Ghz is getting towards "old". Get a NEW DVD burner - so when you read stuff from DVD/CD drive - it's not reading at snails' pace.

Oh, if you're online - make sure you are getting a decent download speed. It could be mmorpg server itself being overloaded.

Check for game updates aswell!! You say you have all your drivers updated, but game updates can make a huge difference. Make sure you bios is set right with your graphics card aswell, if it is AGP make sure it is running at 8x as your card handles that. Also make sure you power supply has enough power for everything you are trying to run.

Just checking your motherboard ... P4P800S-X
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=29&model=173&modelmenu=1

It's a socket 478 and not the newer socket 775.

You are limited to using AGP 8x cards, so you can't slap in a PCI Express x16 nVidia 7900GTX for example. Best AGP 8X card now is a nVidia 6800GS - which you have now.

Otherwise, nothing really wrong with your PC (apart from a smallish 80Gb HDD)

There is nothing wrong with a 80 GB harddrive.

The Geforce 7800GS is significantly faster than the 6800GS, and it's an AGP 8X card.

If the mmorpg is WoW then the problem is with them, not you. It actually made the BBC news pages.
