Common Cold

How come we made great strides in Modern Medicines, and yet we still have no cure for the common cold. I have a cold myself and it sucks. My heater didn't work on a cold Spring night and dammit.

what I found helps is Vitamin C in large doses within the first 24 hours of a cold tends to either kill it or shorten it's stay.

I'm gonna have to bust out the science on you...;)

The reason we don't have a cure for the cold is because there are literally thousands of species of bacteria that cause the symptoms we call the "cold". So really, there are thousands of colds out there, not just one.

That and the viruses that also cause colds mutate each year, leaving what worked before suddenly not working.

I'm not sure if it really has time to fortify your immune system then. Might be wrong though.

I find that a glass of orange juice a day can really work wonders in protecting you though. Ever since I made that a habit, I haven't been seriously sick for ages - sure, a runny nose that lasts for a day maybe, but nothing more serious than that.

Or maybe I just got lucky :p

I don't think there's really much you can do, but tough it out & hope it passes quickly.

I'd rather have cures for cancer, and AIDS, than for the common cold.

I don't usually get colds, but it doesn't matter, I sneeze anyway! I suffer from "photic sneeze", which means I sneeze whenever I move from a dark place to a brightly lit one. Recently I was walking down the high street, my head passed through a patch of sunlight and I sneezed so hard I pulled a muscle in my back. Oww... don't sneeze while walking, kids.

My main drink is orange juice. I drink at least 3 or 4 glasses a day.

I still get ill a fair amount.

So, either you're lucky or I'm just unlucky.... *sobs* :p

If the "common cold" were caused by bacteria, we could treat it with antibiotics, such as penicillins and quinolones and macrolides and aminoglucosides, and whatnot.

It's not caused by bacteria, though.

The cold, like AIDS is caused by a virus and we have never and most likely will never cure a virus. The only hope would be a vaccine, but as said the virii mutate each year so there really is no hope.

Try Lemon juice mixed in a cup with honey and then add hot water (then add cold water so you don't burn your tong.)

Since viruses are very small, it would only be micro evolution. :)

I use black tea, lemon juice & honey is better. I think it's better.
