The Photos that Stay With You

Democratic Colonies

We've all seen them. We all have them. The photos that stay with you, somehow speak with you. The photos that mean something special to you.

I thought it'd be a good time to share. I apologize if this thread shows up too often, as I'm sure it's been done before.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/JC_Denton/a836c355.jpg

This is a photo that will stay with me forever. She was a young woman who had just left her fiance. She left a note saying that she couldn't be a good wife, went to the Empire State Building, and jumped off the observation deck.

She looks so at peace, I have a hard time accepting that she's dead. She just seems like a young woman who's stopped for a rest - then you realize that she's never waking up. She looks at peace, but it's the peace that can only be found in the embrace of death. Should we envy her, or pity her? I have to say that I feel a bit of both.

Anyways, I hope the next post is something uplifting. Share, NS General posters! Share the photos that you hold dear.

Yes, everytime I see that picture I think of those brave soldiers who refused to be cowed by a bunch of unarmed civilians. The students may have had freedom and hope on their side, but the Soldiers moved in spite of the danger, having only flimsy tanks and machine guns to protect them from the sheer waves of idealism that pressed down on them.

You're a fuckin' idiot.
See that man in front of the tank? He stood there, knowing that those tanks could easily crush him, but he blocked the tank column for a half hour at Tienanmen Square. He didn't have a gun, or a tank, he just had courage.

Yeah, while he harrassed those poor soldiers. All they had were superior numbers and several tonnes of solid steel, but he merciless stood in the way of their God-given duties. That was half an hour filled with sheer terror for them. Just imagine it, that man could have burst out into a stirring speech about freedom at any moment.
And what if he'd leapt under their tank treads, eh? Do you have any idea how much time it takes to clean blood off those things?
He didn't have a gun, or a tank, he just had courage.
A most unfair advantage against the Army of China. How dare he call upon devices that those soldiers and their superiors had no knowledge of?

This picture is of the Oakland Cypress Freeway collapse as a result of the '89 earthquake in the Bay Area. My father did stock photography at the time and, although this is not an image he photographed, I chose it because I saw this first hand. I was still in high school and parents didn't want to leave me home alone for fear of another quake.

I stood to the side while my father took pictures. It was a terrifying sight to see cars smashed between the bridges like pancakes. I could hear people calling for help while rescuers worked to save them. I guess the thing that finally cemented this night in my brain forever was looking into an AC Transit bus that they were using for a morgue. Somewhere in my father's stash of images that he photographed that night is an image that I will never need to look at because, even when I close my eyes, I see it. A woman's leg stuck out from under a blanket and on top of her leg was a little red shoe. I knew it belonged to a very young child. It has haunted me ever since.

I think this picture is somewhat uplifting:
http://www.indepundit.com/archive2/tank%20man.jpg
It shows the courage of the human spirit.
Until you hear the story. The famous 'Tank man'* photo was taken shortly after the red guard had murdered hundereds to thousands of peacefully protesting students (nobody knows how many for sure). Tank man obstructed the path of the exiting tanks, and began lecturing them. He jumped up onto the tank and began talking to the driver. Eventually, some of his fellow students came and dragged him from the tank in fear for his life. Then the oppressed people went home, and the tanks went back to their barracks'. Since that day, the dreams of the immortalised protesters at Tianamen square have sailed further and further away from actualisation. The once enormous pro-democracy movement in China has shrunk in size to a handful of dwindling ex-pats living in the USA. China's government is more powerful than ever, and faces less and less pressure from the powers of the world in regards to human rights, thanks to all of the money it genertes for the world economy. Hong Kong is struggling against anti-protest legislation, set against the annual candlelight vigil in rememberance of the lives lost in Tiananmen square. Taiwan, the last glimmering pearl of freedom for some of the chinese people, is facing difficulties in having it's sovereignity recognised internationally, thanks to Chinese bribery of key governments. And finally, the power of the CCP is ever growing, with the economy of china. The civil rights of the Chinese people are almost non-existant.

I weep for the people of China.

*The true identity of 'tank man' is not known, though several people have confessed to the honour. Former chainman Jiang Zemin is quoted saying "I don't beleive he was killed" on the topic of tank man. The reality is that if his true identity became known to the government, he would probably have been murdered by now.
