A dedication to Full Metal Jacket

I got to say, this is one of the best militatry movie I've ever seen! R Lee Emery (one of my favorite actors) plays the part of the Drill Sargent at the beginning of the movie. A part he was born to play, he actually was a DI in the Marine Corps. I doubt the directors even needed a script for Emery, just let him cut loose. The effects (blood etc.) were also amazing. I also like the second half of the movie where they were in Vietnam. I've talked to many Vietnam Vets, and they say that Full Metal Jacket showed a pretty accurate picture of Vietnam. So, do you guys like this movie, why? Do you hate it, why?

This is my favorite quote from the movie.

WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION NUMB NUTS???

R Lee Emery rules!

The first half is excellent. The second half, being shot in London Docklands, not so much.

Isn't that the one where the fat guy shoots the officer?

I wonder if they did give Emery a script for his part. It doesn't seem like they did. Here's how Emery got the part. He was on the board who reviews roles for the DI, and none of them satifised Emery, so he got up and showed the board how a DI is susspose to act, and he got the part.

Yep, Private Pyle shooting Gunney.

Yep, Private Pyle shooting Gunney.

Thanks.
In that case, I didn't like it much... Watching soldiers screaming at the top of their lungs for 3 hours isn't my cup of tea.

Yeah, it's one of the better anti-military movies I've seen.

And it is very quotable... ;)
These are great days we're living, bros. We are jolly green giants, walking the Earth with guns. These people we wasted here today are the finest human beings we will ever know. After we rotate back to the world, we're gonna miss not having anyone around that's worth shooting.
There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless.
Anyone who runs is a V.C.! Anyone who stands still... is a well-disciplined V.C.!

Meh, there were many anti-war movies I preferred. "Das Boot" for example.

I agree - there are lots of better anti-war movies out there, but this is in my opinion one of the best anti-military movies ;)

Shouldn't this dedication be to The Short Timers? Afterall, without it Full Metal Jacket would never have been made. Great book.

As far as I know, they didn't. Kubrick told Emery to make it real, to which Emery repiled, "I wouldn't do it any other way".
I once found the screenplay on line (not sure if it's the real one though) and that whole induction scene was written:
(Lee Emery comes in)

Private Joker: Is that you John Wayne? Is it me?

(end scene)

If this was a true script, it's brilliant acting on all parts.

Personally, I love the lines:
"How tall are you soldier?"
"Sir! 5 foot 8, sir!"
"5 foot 8? I didn't know they could stack shit that high! You ain't trying to squeeze an inch in on me now, are ya boy?"
- great to use on someone who doesn't know the movie!

And my absolute favourite is:
"Private Pyle, you climb obstacles like old people fuck!"
Can be used in so many situations.

The most chilling moment to me is when the spectacle dude gets shot through a tiny gap visible to the sniper.

When he is dying and saying "I can hack it! I can hack it!" while coughing blood. Disturbed me. :(

Das Boot is an outstanding movie. One of the absolute best war movies made.
