Canada's Immigration Minister, somewhat recently voted in with the Conservative Government, has suggested that the current target of 300000 newcomers (A target set by the previous Liberal Government), should be reduced. He mentioned the number 260000 as a possible target.

What do you think?
Personally, I am appaled. I thought 300000 (Less than 1% of the Canadian population of 32,422,919) was too small.

That is small. The US let's about 1,000,000 people immigrate legally every year. Why does Canada not like immigrants?

errr... percentage-wise then, America lets a lot fewer immigrants in... you may want to ask that question towards America, instead. ;)

The United States has about 9 times as many legal residents as Canada does. Proportionally Canada lets in far more.
I agree with the Conservative government. Most of the immigrants aren't useful immigrants. They're unskilled labour, and they don't speak English or French. Plus, they almost all settle in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, and that's not terribly helpful.
What we need are more immigrants of the sort that help us. That means, immigrants that speak English or French, and immigrants with skills. Tradesmen, doctors, nurses.
The Liberal government jacked up their immigration targets (which they never met, by the way - the target was 300,000/year, but we never got that many) because immigrants vote Liberal.

Racist.
Racist.
I'm making distinctions based on relevant criteria. Not race.

Racist.
What a load of shit. If he was racist he'd be making distinctions of immigrants by race. He's making distinctions by language (Which has no relation to race) and skills. There's nothing racist about what he said. It just confirms my belief that the left use 'racist' as a word to try and stifle dissent, much like 'witch' was used in the old days.

'The Left'? Who are they then, a band?

Open borders only works if we eliminate welfare, first.

We already have lots of English and French speakers. If we want to be a hub of world communication, we need people who speak other languages. I suppose knowing English or French certainly helps a person settle, but I hardly think it ought to be as much of a criteria for entry as it is.

Canada should restrict immigration so Australia can outgrow it in both population and economic power.

Ha. Never Going To Happen.
Well, we'll keep the legal ones.
how would we do that... pay the runners to drive them all the way up to Canada? :D
"quiet... the border patrols are tighter so it does take longer... in 5 days, you'll be in the land of the free!"
