They're black, they're violent and they're in my cities!

Black bears have wandered into two New Jersey cities, including my city, Trenton. Steven Colbert recently listed bears as the number one threat to America in his show's "Threat down" feature. I think more permits to hunt bears should be issued. What do you folks think?
Police kill bear in backyard outside Newark, N.J.
IRVINGTON, N.J. - A 300-pound black bear that had been wandering urban New Jersey for two days was shot and killed by police Wednesday in a backyard on the edge of Newark after it reared up on his hind legs and appeared ready to charge, authorities said. Seven shotgun blasts rang out and the bear slumped to the ground. Before the bear was killed, nervous police officers chased three or four youngsters from nearby yards, and were becoming increasingly worried that more than 1,000 neighborhood children would soon be walking home from school. Jim Osorio, an animal control officer who gave the order to shoot, said he was ready to fire a tranquilizer dart when the bear assumed an aggressive position. The bear shooting came only days after a 225-pound bear was caught in downtown Trenton. It was shot by state biologists and was the first bear to be killed as part of the state's no-tolerance policy on bears in densely populated areas. source

I thought they're #1 everytime on the threatdown? Haven't seen the show since i lost cable. I do think bear hunting should be allowed but only for population control or food. Or if they're tearing ass in your neightborhood.

If you allow hunting for population control it will prevent them tearing ass in the neighborhods because they'll be fewer in number and more afraid of people.

If you kill all the bears, how will the others know to fear us? I never understood that.

Well you don't kill all of them. The ones who end up dying will mainly be the ones who don't panic and run away when they smell or hear humans approaching. Therefore you end up killing the ones most likely to come into coflict with people while preserving the timid ones.

Except as long as you stand your ground with black bears they aren't likely to charge unless they're sick. The idiot obviously didn't know much about bears and it's a relatively needless death. When they rear it's an attempt to make you run away, not a sign that they will charge.

They aren't likely to charge, but sometimes they will. Also New Jersey's cities have a zero tolerance for bears policy. I shit you not.

The cities were the home of bears before the white man came and took their appartments! Nature wants revenge!

True, on the other hand they're pretty slow until they get up to speed and unless they were crowding the bear, there should have been time to actually see if it was going to charge.

I hope all the bears have been notified of these rules.

I will protect to the death my right to keep and arm bears

I had a guy like that in my house last week. He was 6' 6" and 380 lbs with size 14 feet. He had a hard time walking through the doorways.

He was a little larger than this black bear they put down in Livingston.

That assumes hunters won't pursue or shoot at a bear that does run away. I think thats a false assumption to make of the average hunter.

It's just that the really timid ones will be less likely to be killed while the ones with less fear of humans will tend to die in higher numbers. It doesn't guarantee that only the bolder bears will be shot.

But again that assumes that timidity will save these bears. It really doesn't, not when hunters have infrared vision and are combing the hills to protect their children. And if timid bears get shot, well then that whole, Darwinism thing where we're ensuring a timid population by killing the bolder ones off isn't going to work, it'll just be overall depopulating bears.
