Public Sector or Private Sector?

For four years I've been studying to become a teacher, but since I was rejected from student teaching (oral communication problems, not my fault) I've been studying straight history instead of history and education. Since I've been doing that I've decided that I would like to be an Archivist. Now I know that most colleges need an Archivist, however I wonder if theres any companies that also need Archivist. I'm under the impression that the private sector pays more than the public sector. However, I am not sure. So right now I am trying to decide if I should be an Archivist in the public or private sector. What do yall think?

actually, most companies employ some form of archivist...if I recall correctly, I was told that museaums and recording companies pay the best, but don't quote me on that. I would think both public and private would pay about the same, so it really comes down to what you want to be archiving...if you like music, the government isn't the place to look...if you like politics and law, then a museaum is not the place for you.

I like History and Politics.

you'd probably do well in a government job then...or a place like american history museaums or what have you. I'm pretty sure the pay is similar, and if the actual pay is less for governement, I think that benefits would make up for it (such as 20 and out, better insurance, etc.)

Cool. I may go work for a University. Right now Duke University is offering a pretty sweet deal.

The usual difference is government is a wee bit more secure in terms of keeping your job, private tends to pay better, but you might get downsized.

Up to you.

Eh that is true. I guess Duke would be a public sector job. Hmmm. I gotta tell ya Duke is waving a pretty good package in front of me $38,000 - $41,000 all of the beneficts, major holidays off, 20 vacation days 14 sick days etc.

Depends entirely on the comparable job secuity, wages, benefits, career progression, etc. There are pros and cons to both. I know many that say that private companies can go broke. The government will always be the government.

The government will always be the government.

Unless there are separatists.

In that case you would get two governments.
