Ahh! Video card help?

I just installed my new video card.

Now everything is... pink. Or other odd colors that don't belong. The fluffle, wink, angry and the smile smilies are bright orange.... as is the fuck you smilie. the eye roll smilie is a really dark brown. Even the slime gun is a dark dark brown.

my dark brown tool bars have been changed to PINK.

The card I installed was a GeForce 6600GT, sold by AOpen. My computer is able to support is according to the stats I was given on the page I purchased it at (on Newegg). I've installed all the software that came with it, and it shows that I'm at a setting with 32 colors, but it's obviously not showing them all

That's what my computer colors look like now.

ha... shoulda known my screenie would have been off by the colors of my monitor :P

would there be any way to fix it? (beyond buying a new monitor to test it out)

I would suggest that you mean 32bit colour rather than 32 colours.

Try reducing the colour depth to 16 bit and see if it improves.

yes. sorry, it's late, and I'm tired. adding this isn't helping at all.

there's really no difference between 16 and 32 bit

What it seems to be is that all the colors are... shifted, for lack of a better word. All except yellow, really. I can't find yellow anywhere

Thanks in advance for any help :)

This morning I opened it up, made sure the video card was seated properly and that the monitor plug was in all the way. nothin'.

Just a checklist
(1) Video card is seated securely
(2) No bent pins on the connecting VGA cable or DVI connection
(3) You got the right video driver?
(4) Your monitor - adjust the contrast and brightness in case these have been set too low or high. If you use LCD, use the "Auto Adjustment" function or use degaussing if it is CRT.

Checklist:

1) Call tech support
2) Invoke Satan
3) Pour the still-warm blood of a newly sacrificed virgin on the new video card
4) Call upon Satan's dark powers to fix your graphics card

That should work just fine.

1. Done
2. Done
3. AGP in an AGP slot, if that's what you mean... not sure what you really mean by that
4. Tried it.. makes it brighter/ darker, but the colors themselves remain wrong.. Degaussing does nothing at all.

I assume you are using Windows (from the screenshots). The Video driver is what Windows uses to control what you see on the screen. When you get a new video card, it usually comes with a DVD or CD-ROM with some drivers so the card works properly with your system. Your 6600GT needs nVidia specific drivers to make it work correctly, usually provided by the manufacturer.

And degaussing ...

Check you've got the latest ones from the card manufacturer's website.

yes, I've installed all the drivers from the CD.

The only problem I had is that it asked fror the "Dell Corporation Monitor CD" or something to that effect... which I don't have. I have a user documentation CD for the monitor and it's the only thing that has to do with the monitor. It accepted it as the monitor CD, however.

Oh, you have a Dell! Hit the Dell web site and find the monitor drivers too. Windows XP is good with most monitors and generic driver works most of the time, but them Dells are different ...

yeah, a dell. once I get money, I think I'm ditching it and going with another mobo and just moving the new stuff.

I downloaded the monitor driver, but there's nothing to install o_O It gives me a profile, which I put in the nVidia display, but it didn't change anything.

Since you lost that Dell CD, maybe you might need something on it.
Have you a friend with spare monitor? Just borrow it for a day and see if that monitor does the same thing.

(I've got two dud monitors sitting around)

I could see if I could drag my parents monitor in here... it's like 6 years old. or maybe more. along with the whole system, actually... one reason why I bought my own, heh.

Getting that monitor is going to have to wait, actually... they have the cord through a tiny hole and I'm not sure how they managed to do that. it doesn't fit. o.O

Mine's not blurry, though. The image is perfectly clear and nice, except for the colors being off.

My old crappy AMD-K6 PC died and needed complete replacement.
I could have gone the Dell and HP/Compaq path but working in IT industry long enough - they stick in less quality parts and I don't like their motherboards. Ended up with "custom" PC where I know what I have in it. Try Dell support, but I suspect they will not want to help you as you put in 3rd party part.

I bought Dell because I knew diddly squat about putting a computer together. This was two, three years ago. And besides that, I only wanted it to go online/ word programs with; I'm not really a big gamer. Or wasn't until my friend introduced me to WoW.

That's what I figured :\ I mgiht call our tech place here when I get home, if I can't figure something about.

Good luck. Video card or monitor problems are one of easier PC issues to fix compared to trying diagnose a network problem. Colours being off isn't bad compared to blurry screen - gives you a !@#$ headache.

Dell are BAD. They have incredibly bizzarre generic parts, a ton of which you can't replace with decent ones. Hooray.

Does the monitor have a colour temp setting? soemtimes that can make a difference.

generally speaking funky colour issues tend to be down to a monitor on its way out, do yous till have your old video card? if so try reintalling that and see if the image is fine.
