wouldn't you find this a disturbing website and very degrading
: The Stormfront White Nationalist Community is a prominent white nationalist / white pride / white supremacist Internet forum. It began as a dial-up Bulletin board system in 1990 and has been on the Internet since 1995. By 1997, Stormfront.org had expanded and began hosting other white-nationalist websites. Its motto is "White Pride World Wide". The site owner refers to Stormfront strictly as a white nationalist website. Permitted content covers a broad range of racialist / racist and far right beliefs, including extreme forms, although promotion of violence and illegality is banned.

Stormfront has over 80,000 members and has reportedly had as many as 4,865 users logged in at one time. It is the largest online community of white nationalists and has claimed to be the first website of its kind. Some of its members describe themselves as "National Socialists", among other descriptions including patriots, traditionalists, right wing, racialists, "true" conservatives, and "real" Americans.

The webmaster of the site is Don Black, a self-described racialist and former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Old news. We who have been here at NS for a while have seen stormfront many times over. Members from the site have come here and been ridiculed until the go away or are deleated.

No one really cares about stormfront anymore. It's just a group of people going.

"I hate black people"
"me too"
"yah, they suck. So do jews"

over and over and over. Thats about as intelligent as it gets.

Its better that they are in the open showing what they are than if they were gagged. Far better in the light than hidden.

doesnt that go as one of those freedom of speech things? Although you may not agree with their views, they are certainly entitled to them.

Wow, so you just discovered Stormfront. Big whoop. Trawl the internet and see how much more you can find. Stormfront is definitely the least frightening of all the things that are out there; yeah, like um people giving themselves themselves to be eaten?

That must be it...

The fact that people feel that way to begin with, not the fact that they have the right to express it.

So freedom of speech is only a good thing if the speech is in 100% agreement with your views? hmmm...

Been there. Not nearly as hate-filled as JTF, NukeIsrael, or John Shelley's Journal.

Civil liberties are not absolute.

"So freedom of speech is only a good thing if the speech is in 100% agreement with your views? hmmm..."

Freedom of speech is only a good thing if it is used responsibly.

Im not sure spreading racist doctrine is a responsible use of freedom of speech.

Utter bullshit. You have the right to say whatever you like, however you like whenever you like. It is the role of the free market of ideas to weaken bad arguments. Silencing people is by no means acceptable. A freedom of speech which is fettered is a self-contradiction.

I have to say I agree here.... I believe it was Voltaire who said "I agree with nothing that you have said, but I would fight to the death to preserve your right to say it"....

It is understandible that you don't agree with hatespeech, but everyone has that right to speak their views, even if in disagreement with yours.

Freedom of speech is worthless if it only covers speech that people want to hear. I would not like to hear racist speech, but I would like even less for the government to make sure I don't have to hear it.

And EM, does it really not bother you that people can have such hateful attitudes towards their fellow man?

Precisely. What is more, if the state were to take the role of the "bad guy" and shift from the "good guy" (how simplistic), it would be the ultimate arbiter of what is right and wrong. States should not be apportioned so much power.

States should by no means be assumed to be benevolent and good. They are ultimately whomever they represent. No less, no more.

Nah, why should it? Though I can figure out plenty of other reasons to hate people.

So long as these guys don't harm and interfere with the existence of the people they hate, I am indifferent. They can think whatever they like.

You might want to re-read THAPOAB's post: it was concerned with what responsible use of free speech was, not whether irresponsible speech should be banned.

I was just suspicious of his/her use of the label "good", as in all "bad" uses should be banned. Perhaps I did infer a little too much though.
