Soccer: The worst Sport (at lest one of the worst)

Ok so i was at the upper-state girls soccer match between Lexington and Dorman high schools last night. never before have i seen a sport soo cotolled by referees ever ever evrer. Especially that stupid stoppage rule. the ref controls the end of a game and ended teh game last night in overtime before lexington could get a corner kick off (we lost 1-0). i dont know much about soccer but i thought that was gay. dorman scored a goal off a free kick that was headed in off a cheap call. lexington players reciaved 2 yellow cards for what looked like nothing (but then again i dont know soccer).

Firstly, women's football is always terrible. I don't know why that is, it just is.

Secondly, American football is awful. It is one of the most boring things I have ever seen. They only ever seemed to play for 10 seconds at a time before the referee lined them all up again. No wonder Janet Jackson's boob caused such a stir - it was the most interesting thing ever to have happened in the history of the game.

Thirdly, cricket beats all other sports, so worrying about which second rate sport is the least inferior is irrelevant.

Why didn't you score earlier in the game then?

Aye, you don't.

but i thought that was gay.
Is that meant to be an insult to football or homosexuals?

The ref can blow for full time any time after the minimum extra time required, deceided by the ref, has been played.

Well.....I have to say that more countries play football (soccer to the Americans here) than any other sport. The upcoming football World Cup features teams from -

Angola
Argentina
Australia
Brazil
Costa Rica
Croatia
Czech Republic
Ecuador
England
France
Germany
Ghana
Holland
Iran
Italy
Ivory Coast
Japan
Mexico
Paraguay
Poland
Portugal
Saudi Arabia
Serbia & Montenegro
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Togo
Trinidad & Tobago
Tunisia
USA
Ukraine

I am not a huge football fan, but I do watch 'big' games and will follow England in the World Cup....I have also watched American style 'football' and find it just about the most boring thing I have ever seen on television with the exception of golf....and can not understand the CONSTANT breaks, and all the big fat men wandering about in silly little tight trousers is too horrid to think about....

Womens football is not popular in England, thats all I know about it....

The only reason that Association Football (soccer) is'nt a mainstream sport in the US is because the TV companies can't dictate how many commercials an hour they can show. to quote a popular phrase in the United Kingom "Football is a game of two halves" the half time break is when the the commercial tv companies can show commercials. Any game which originates from the US has stops and time outs in it ergo commercial time. The Tv rights have just been sold for £1.7 billion that's almost $30 trillion and thats just for the rights to screen English and Scottish league matches. for that sort of dough I think they could cut back on the commercials don't you?

American football is boring if you don't know the sport and what is going on, and I guess the same may well apply to soccer. Difficult to know as most of the world grows up with soccer.

Shouldn't mock really. i saw two girls playing cricket the other day, and that's changed my whole perception on that sport.
And last week, there were two five year olds having their first tennis lesson. They were so crap, and so is tennis - coincidence? no.
And amazingly, last month saw a few girls having a go at basketball. not netball, basketball. What a crap sport that is.

Jeez, does sarcasm come across in these posts?

Soccer doesn't quite jibe with the American mentality. I don't necessarily blame soccer. I don't necessarily blame the American mentality.

Though being american, I lean toward blaming the american mentality. :p

Anyhoo... Here's what's 'wrong' with soccer from an American's viewpoint:

The clock goes the wrong way. We Americans like our countdowns. ANd we HATE not knowing the exact time left. The idea that a game can end anytime and not when the clock reaches 0:00 annoys us.
Ties annoy us. We've done almost everything in our power to eliminate draws in American Sports. If you look at the big three: Football(AMerican), Basketball and Baseball, Two of them are almost impossible to have a draw in and the other one is impossible. Baseball continues until there's a winner.
For the most part, it makes for crappy television. Soccer on tv mostly sucks. It's much better in person. But if it's no good on TV, then it will never be big in America. There's one good thing about soccer on TV. I'll get to that shortly.

On the other hand, there are a few things that are pretty groovy about soccer:

Hooligans. I love hooligans. MY kind of people. :)
Crazy players. Every few years a player comes along that is a total nutcase and everybody loves or hates him. I still can't get enough of Vinnie Jones. :)
Mexican announcers. There's nothing better than a mexican soccer announcer going "GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLL!!!!!!" Loud enough to wake the dead in Zimbabwe. :)

By no means to I fault Soccer and for the most part, I don't fault Americans. Though I do wish we could be a bit more tolerant of Soccer's differences. We could really use some AMerican Soccer Hooligans. :)

(snip)

i dig your points, and the bottom line here is the cutural differences in regards to sport. Its not as if Baseball and Basketball are not global sports (which they are to an extent)

The clock goes the wrong way. We Americans like our countdowns. ANd we HATE not knowing the exact time left. The idea that a game can end anytime and not when the clock reaches 0:00 annoys us.

Me personally i love the fact that in football we could have injury time added on and such, adds to the suspense.

Ties annoy us. We've done almost everything in our power to eliminate draws in American Sports. If you look at the big three: Football(AMerican), Basketball and Baseball, Two of them are almost impossible to have a draw in and the other one is impossible. Baseball continues until there's a winner.

Ties are cool as long as the football was good (but for the most part its not hence no goals).

Hooligans. I love hooligans. MY kind of people. :)
As regards Hooligans, it depends which team they represent - some crews can be cool (i would like to point out the St Pauli Hamburg fans, not really violent unless provoked kinda fans, and being an anti Nazi club they get provoked ALOT!!!) but most are SCUM and largely right wing SCUM at that. But if its the passion you like then Hooligans are not the only ones that are passionate about their teams.

Crazy players. Every few years a player comes along that is a total nutcase and everybody loves or hates him. I still can't get enough of Vinnie Jones. :)
Crazy players are best, they add character to the game but i get the feeling that they are getting rarer and rarer (except maybe the south americans).

Actually, that hasn't been true in the States since before the USA 94 World Cup. They started then having companies pay for chunks of the game to be uninterupted. The announcer says "this portion of the game presented by Jergen's AssCream" and the company logo is up by the score/time box for that 5 minutes or so of the game. US soccer just hasn't really found a commercial niche yet, which should start to change considering that much of the current generation of kids grew up playing soccer. my generation was on the tail end of baseball's popularity with much less opportunities to play soccer. I got bored with baseball at 12 and switched to soccer. NHL screwed everyone with the cancelled season, NBA sucks, MLB has faded greatly in the last decade or so, leaving the NFL as the real powerhouse of American sports. There's a vacuum there that soccer could slide into, especially if the US national team somehow manage to get out of the group of death they drew in the World Cup.

And soccer rocks, maybe not on the tube, but as a sport to participate in it can't be beat. Too many other sports give certain physical atributes an advantage. How many other sports are there where a six foot two, 220 pound guy doesn't have an decided edge over a five foot six 135 pounder? As someone who has PLAYED women's soccer (poorly, as I'm the first to admit), don't knock it. It's not as fast as a men's game, or as spectacular because *SHOCKER* women aren't as fast or strong as men. If you're used to watching a men's game (of any sport), it's not as fun watching a women's game. That doesn't mean that it's not as fun to play or not as "good" a sport or that the athletic feats are any less impressive in their way.

I still like that story about the time Mia Hamm was brought into a pro American football practice and was knocking off field goals with both feet...

Soccer is a good sport, and very fun to play. Actually, the boys aren't always better. In soccer, skill can usually beat speed and strength. That's why my team at school (the girls), usually beat the boys when we practiced against each other, even though a lot of them were faster than most of us.

"Baseball, the only sport you can take a nap while playing..."

Football (World version) I have quite a few friends participating in Football (Hell, I am just going to call it soccer to avoid confusion) and I must say it is very exciting. The game doesn't have as half as many slow downs as American Football has, and the non-stop action is exhillerating to watch and play.

Football (American version) is rather boring to watch in general, but playing it is something completely different, just avoid the sweaty group shower at the end and your good to go.

Baseball. I must say is the most boring to watch and play. If your "at bat" you hit a ball and run to the next base, and wait for the next person to hit the ball. Otherwise you're just standing around waiting for the ball to come near, ugh, how do people play that?

you lie
No mate, i don't. Rugby is 80 minauets pure work for the forwards, with just a few second intivals every 5 mins or so for a setpeice-even then your still moving to the play.

Even for the backs theres a lot of work, Wingers do the least but they run a bit, and have to work bloody hard a lot of the time (Shuttling back between attack/Defence, moves, keeping with the gameline, atckling ect.) At the pace modern rugbys played a American Footballer wouldn't last 20 mkins-in a NL2 game. Plus the hits are massive, though not as big as American Football, however your unprotected and you atke more of them.

You need more skills in Union that anyother sport. A prop needs to be able to scrum, lift in the linout, tackle, maul, clear rucks-and if there amitious kick. A Fly-Half nees to be able to kick, run, pass, tackle, maul and ruck-as well as present the ball well.

Best Sports or worse sports... this topic is entirely subjective and personal.

Never the less, I think it would be hard to find sports fans that are as passionate about their sport as genuine Rugby fans.

Cricket has GOT to be the most boring game I have EVER watched or played. Soccer is fun to play, but not to watch. Give me Hockey anytime.

Not true, cricket is a wonderful, thrilling sport which once you learn the basic rules and get into the right mindset, becomes hugely entertaining.

I too played no 7 eventually. When I wasn't (in historical sequence) no 2, 1, 3, 5, 15, 12, 13, 11, 8. The only tight head prop to have progressed on to play wing three quarter and then back to the flank. (It has a lot to do with the way I developed as I grew. Short and fat to tall and skinny to just big.)

Note I never played as a half back of any kind. I am not suicidal.

I have one question....is it Baseball (like rounders, but men play in funny tight trousers) that has the 'World Series'? And if it is.....how many nations participate in said WORLD series? Two, at most, but usually just one, though since there's been a World Series of Baseball, they might change that.

I now have yet another question...

Whats with the tight trousers dude? We dont want to see your lunch box while you play ballgames, unless you are linford Chritie, a man with a lunch box WORTH looking at...Oh, they all wear tight pants, the pitcher is just the most noticeable because most of the focus is on him.

He meant "least". But he's not very... Well, I'd better not say.
Soccer and Hockey rule the realms of team sports.
But combat sports are still better.

If you imagine shots on goal and corner kicks as points then it ain't to bad.
Soccer ain't Rugby or Cricket though.

Soccer is an awesome game, though I must admit it is not as entertaining as other sports with more scoring. It, Hockey, and College Football (American) are the only sports I watch reguarly because of how good the games are.

And to all you soccer haters, don't knock it till you try it.
