€100,000!!! thats a bit steep. Surely something knocked together out a few poles welded together would be a fraction of the cost??
Its pretty sick though.

Why don't they just use cranes like in Iran?
Silly Mugabe can't even come up with a simple low cost way of doing away with his own people.

Meh. If a country has the death sentence, somebody has to supply the equipment.

We don't use cranes because we have not petrol (gas) in the country. The Gallows used to be built by the Prison services but most skilled labourers have left for South Africa.
Realistically, Zimbabwe exicutes very few people and they are always horrific murderers. I think we've exicuted 100 people in the last decade which is one sitting in a Chinesse court and nowhere near as high as the Americans or even the Saudis. Mugabe has his apponents raped in prison, its the same as a death sentance because of AIDS.

Gallows? That's kind of old fashioned. Just shoot 'em in the head and bill the next of kin for the price of the bullet.

Bit of a sick man really.
In his defence though, you did quote the price of the 'super-delux' gallows there. The standard version is much cheaper.
Oh, and incidentally, his business will be banned by the end of July when new EU legislation comes into force.

Gallows have a psychological impact. Nothing like watching a man choke to death or have his neck snapped on the way down to send a message. Plus, you don't even have to take down the bodies. Leave 'em up as a warning.
£100,000 is a bit steep when you can get the same effect for a rope thrown over a tree branch, though.

You don't even need a tree. Just a tall guy and some rope, or wire.

In that case, go all out and impale them.

Pretty much anyone could make their own gallows. The skill is in the trained operators who'll use them, who make the difference between hanging being one of the most, or one of the least, humane and efficient ways of executing people.
