What decade do you think you belong in?

Simple question. What decade do you think you belong in? I swear I belong in the 50's. The only problem is the 50's hated communists. But besides that I believe I belong in the 50's.

Bonus: Pick one person and say which decade you think they belong in.

Ben Gibbard: So belongs in the 50's with me.

Poll to come.

I think that I could've lived a happy computer nerd life in the 1970's or 1980's when computer technology was still uncomplicated. But when Microsoft began controlling the market, computers became toys.

So, I'm an organic chemist now. There are still plenty of entire undiscovered chemistries around, not to mention reactions. I don't think this area will be toy-ified by a company like Microsoft very soon.

Rock on! 80s is winning!

Man, the 80s were the best decade I hardly lived through. That was when everything (music, technology, science, art) started exponentially developing/expanding.

The pained music of the 80s alone is enough to love it.
I get such a rush of inexplicable nostalgia and bittersweet emotion when I listen to good 80s music. Nothing before or since can compare, except maybe (good) themes from cartoon shows.

No, the ideal life is a huge plot of land in the middle of nowhere with normal weather. A small town within ten miles of your huge self sufficient land, and oh, about 12 kids born or adopted. And of course a private avioneta. It also has to be solar and wind powered electricity, be situated over a natural gas field, and have a couple of generators. Oh, and no computers.

Good call. I just can't stand the music and the lack of electronics.

The music would have to depend on what part of the decade. I'd go for 1970 itself to start with. But then I'm into blues based rock and the roots of heavy metal.

As for the electronics, it existed, and was much easier to deal with if a little larger. (Less ICs)

I honestly wouldn't fit in at all anywhere else. Besides which, things are starting to look up for America again (and they haven't since the start of the 50's). I wouldn't be suprised to see a cultural movement away from conformity and stupidity in the next decade or so.

Sure, the music sucks, the (current) politics suck (although they give me a hobby), the people suck, but that's basically a given in any era.

No, it's more the "nothing else" thing.

Hmm. I think I understand. You have to keep in mind that those "few years" of my life were intense in the extreme and life-changing. I'm still discovering ways in which Vietnam ( and the years after ) changed me. Interesting viewpoint.

And I suspect that the "nothing else" was intended to indicate "no other term," rather than an "artificial construct associated with a flag."

I am quite content in the current decade. If I did go back to the seventies or eighties, I might run into my parents and mess up the whole timeline (I mean, Back To The Future people, come on!). Besides, I know what my parents were like at my age. I am a little curious to see what my grandparents were like at my age, but I would not want to stick around then. Unlike many previous posters, I am not attracted to times of war at all.

Anything pre 1950s would be death to me, as I rely on a medication not widespread until then.

So yeah, I am really happy in the 2000s. I look forward to exploring the next few decades as well.

But most important,

Everyone dressed like a million bucks if they didnt have a nickel in their pocket, Suit and Tie for the Guy and Dress for lady, yeah, that and the Great Gatsby, Hearing Fitzgerald reading Keats, the 1920s--pre-depression and post.

It wasnt calledthe roaring 20s for nothing, and no other Decade has received such a moniker.

As for being around in 330bc...that would be great, however since I dont speak the language...I would end a slave more then likely, if i was lucky, dead if I wasnt.
How could slavery be better than death? Unless you were a gladiator, that is. I'd take death first anyway. You know the saying by Otto Wels, "You can take our lives and our freedom, but you cannot take our honor." The lingual technique is called immersion. Live in a small village for a year or two and you should know the language passably, especially if you take trips to a larger city after the first few months. People there didn't always speak the same language.

Give me the sixties over the decade I was born in any day (80´s).

Though I must´ve romanticised the sixties, such a decade of turmoil, great music, counter-culture, love, psychonauts, protest and energy of which we will probably never see the likes again.

Every decade has its attractions and downsides, but I ´ll side with the hippies on this (asking to be flamed :p probably)

I suppose one infinite temporal realm qualifies as not being one finite realm of existence, though I would be inclined to go for multiple infinite temporal realms, preferably cascading realms. I've always thought that would be cool.

Atemporal realms would be interesting too, but they're not my style.

I actually belong back in the 1700 - 1800s ... my vocabulary includes words like 'ere' and I would just absolutely LOVE to have one of their dresses, with the corsets and the big pouf at the back and the boots that button all the way up to the knee and a little tiny umbrella to protect my fair skin and my hair up in amazingly complex curls piled on top of my head.

I don't know what decade in the 20th century I belong in. Maybe the 30s, where everybody smoked and the world was more liberal, or maybe in the 50s where mothers were expected to stay home and smile and let their man take care of them.

Ack, now I'm confused... am I really a medieval liberal conservative? My heads gonna explode now.

When would I want to live? Like, if I know everything I know now and am still the same age? Then probably 1930's Germany. Give me a chance to stop Mr. Fuhrer. Introduce the Kennedy syndrome to world leaders a few decades earlier. I might be able to stop a LOT of future daddies, present brothers, and various other loved ones from dying. Who knows what temporal time change...things...I might accidentally cause, but hey, I'll take the chance. I'm sure the visitors of concentration and death camps would agree with my risk-taking. ;)

Then again, I'd kinda like thsoe times just for the social structure: people were more respectable, kids didn't walk around with their rears showing, and there was actual discipline for unruly troublemakers.

On another note, who knows what I could do in THIS decade?

Yikes...scary thoughts, huh?

War is good, by the way. Well, conventional war anyway. It manages to balance the powers in the world and keep us focused on what's really important, "families, homes, good life." World War II would have happened anyway, and changing what did happen could have made things worse. The world could be Stalinist, worse even than the Nazi vision. The war could be longer, bloodier, and destroy any real notion of civilization. You, my friend, just destroyed the human race over sixty years ahead of schedule.
