Bush says he will close Guantanamo

Whittier---

He's just waiting on a US Supreme Court decision.

"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, however, has dismissed calls for the prison to be closed."

Rumsfeld is not the President of the United States so it really isn't up to him if it is closed or not. Though his statement makes clear that he would like to see it stay open.

True. And he always does what he says he will do.
Much unlike Clinton who always said one thing and then did the exact opposite.

especially considering the amount of weasel room bush imagines to exist even in clear, short, declarative statements

I love the way he puts it, "I'd love to close it tomorrow, but you know my hands are tied, I have to wait for the courts to tell me what to do."
It's strange that in other aspects of his presidency he hasn't let what the laws say bother him before.

Now, if on only there were a way to make this murder and perverted travesty of justice undone and give those people all those years of their lives back.

Guantanamo Bay will remain a disgrace for the US for a very long time - a reminder that the "land of the free, home of the brave" is actually filled with cowards yearning for repression.

he never said he'd do that. that is a lie invented by the bush-hating liberal media. any video you may have seen purporting to show bush saying that is clearly a forgery (unlike those documents about nigerian uranium...). bush keeps telling it like it is, but it's hard to catapult over the terrorist-loving propaganda.

"As of yesterday, the Bush administration still hadn't found the source of the White House leak that outed a woman as a CIA operative. To recap, here are the things President Bush can't find: The source of the leak, weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin laden, the link between Saddam and Osama bin laden, the guy who sent the anthrax through the mail, and his butt with two hands and a flash light."

the uzbeks, for example, just have a better skill set for the job, in addition to lower costs. and they've already got much of the necessary infrastructure in place.

Bush is full of hot air. How about "We need to break this addiction" [to oil]? Hmm. Oh and then there's the other recent gem about nuking Iran to teach them that developing nuclear arms is very naughty, great lesson. In some cases I damn well hope he doesn't do everything he says he wants to.

The US government has no intention of stopping torture. They haven't been a fan of the UDHR for quite some time, I see no reason why it will change now. They're just bricking it because they got caught, so Bush is saying exactly what his press advisor wants him to. Empty words. Or if he does close it, another place will take over the job.

True. And he always does what he says he will do.
Much unlike Clinton who always said one thing and then did the exact opposite.

You mean like "We will find Osama bin Laden whereever he hides and bring him to justice"

Followed by

"I don't know where he is (Bin Laden) and frankly, don't care"

Or perhaps "If anyone in my administration is responsible for that leak, we will find out and punish him" (roughly)

To

*absolute silence after finding out about who actually leaked it*

Or maybe "We are not into the practice of nation-building"

And

"We are going into Iraq to free them from a dictator and spread democracy and freedom"

There's more where that came from Whittier. A lot more. I like to garnish your lies with a sprinkling of truth.

What strikes me as fundamentally odd is the fact that people still are angry with clinton for saying this and not acting on his words while most politicians (and yes this is a generalization) have habitually and proffessionally to promise one way and compromise and go another.

BTW: Clinton was impeached for lying about an affair, then Bush lies to his own people about the actions of a nation, possible weapons of mass destruction, etc, leads them into a war on false pretences and is re-elected... I think leading a country into a war with lies is a step up from lying about who you shagged in your office...

Well, considering most of the American mentality (Puritans primarily), sex is icky while war is fun for the family, it's not much of a surprise is it? But honestly, I think it's really because most Americans never actually experienced what it was like to go through total war (actually having to fight on your land) and see the kind of destruction it wrecks.

So there's a disconnect there with the public generally being fed the thumbs up version of war news when they're involved. It would be much harder to dupe the public if there was an actual war on US soil.

You're a little behind. It wasn't a "leak" because the administration can classify or declassify anything. Therefore, an administration official can't "leak" because if anything is said it is automatically declassified. Therefore, no one "leaked" the information.
