World Cup propaganda getting to you too?

I live in England and go to a 'Sports College' (Not my choice believe me!), but hate sport especially football/soccer.

As some people may know the football World Cup is approaching, and I'm hard-pressed even to watch TV without a massive dose of football propaganda. Every advert goes like "If you are a true fan of football, buy our pizza/credit cards/holidays/nail-files." I almost feel insulted by this and once thought "I'm not a true fan of football at all, so why dont I refuse to buy any of it?" Of course, this isn't possible as virtually every product supports the World Cup now. So why am I so opposed to it? Three main reasons:

1. Players get paid way too much. I can't stand football-playing dumbass jerks at school, you know, the kind who stop everyone else from getting abything done and make everyone get punished for their own stupidity. so I hate these same football-playing dumbass jerks when they actually get paid more than decent, hard working people.

I once tried to bring that up at school to one of these jerks by saying "How can someone get paid so much for playing a game, when people who save lives and do important research get so much less. I don't get paid for playing scrabble, and it's the same principle." To this he merely laughed and shouted "She plays scrabble!"

2. At my school people are rewarded massively for taking part in sporting activities. Unfortunately these same people are never there to collect their rewards as they are either skiving, smoking somewhere or have been suspended for taking drugs/vandalism/threatening someone with a pocket knife. There are very few rewards for academically able people, and nationwide, schools get more 'points' for the league tables from vocational subjects than academic ones. I also despise the PE teachers. They know absolutely nothing; they can't spell or add, and nothing they say ever makes sense, yet they think they are better than you because they can run around and have a very basic knowledge of human anatomy.

3. People always show support for their local team, no matter how crappy. Why not support a team who actually try hard and deserve to be supported, if there even is one. They delude themselves into feeling smart by learning the players' names, and think that if we all carry around the country's flag and sing stupid songs about curry we might somehow influence their performance; who cares?! When the games are all over the 'unpatriotic' members of society who have more important things to do, such as schoolwork, that stuff that we do so we don't have to go on the dole and live off everyone else, are blamed for our defeat.

One more minor thing that annoys me is the news reporters. After covering the real news, often about war, murder or death, the presenter switches to a happy smiley face to delude the viewer that real life is great, because Albion beat Arsenal 3-2 in the premiership.

So this year, I've decided I will do something special for the world cup, and am supporting Germany to irritate my classmates. Either that or I'll crawl under a rock for a few weeks until it's over; we're not going to get past the semi-finals anyway, from what I hear in class most of the players are either injured or inexperienced.

What are you going to do this World Cup?

Question: You go to a Sports School but you hate sports? How does that work?

I love sports and can't wait for the World Cup. I will be watching as many games as possible and cheering on Italy and Trinidad and Tobago.

It's probably a specialist ports college. It would probably get extra money per year, say 100k or so (that's how much my maths and computing college gets) per year to spend on the specialist subject. It's still a normal school, and is probably just like any other, just with specialist sports facilities.
You get anything-specialst schools. Language, sports, art etc

The closest we've come to World Cup propaganda in America is a commercial that shows shots of the US soccer team with the Nike Swoosh at the end.

You bet I'll watch (and NS of course). Hopefully Australian can beat Brazil in the group game, but that's not terribly likely so maybe we can get points against Croatia and Japan instead.

As for sport schools, never seen one in Australia.

It is indeed a load of bollocks.

The fact that, or so I've heard, I've not really been following it, only 8% of the seats in a World Cup-game holding stadium is given over to the fans following a team. Another percentage is given over to the locals, whilst the rest is given over to the corporations sponsoring the World Cup. That's rubbish.

It's not so much a celebration of the best football teams in the world, but a celebration of corporations and their money making power.

Living in the states, this isn't such a problem commercially, but as I go to an International school, about three-quarters of the other guys in my class hardly talk about ANYTHING but soccer! I actually like playing the sport, but to me no sport is fun if you're trying to play a friendly game and someone else is a maniac who acts like every goal decides the fate of the world.

Blame nasty Capitalism, that player makes more money because he earns more for the club, if he didn't he wouldn't be a sound investment and cound'nt demand that much. Doctors can not earn that much because they don't make as much money for their employer. Yes its a ridiculous sum of money but if you don't want them to get that much money boycott everything to do with it. ;)

 Albion never beat Arsenal 3-2; not this season.

31 days to go...

People try to cash in on anything they can. The World Cup, being arguably the world's biggest sporting event, simply means that a lot more money can be made from it.
