In case you hadn't heard, two miners were trapped about a kilometre underground after a small earthquake shook up a gold mine in Tasmania.

They spent 14 nights there, and now they came out, sound and alive.

It's a good story, even though there probably is little to debate about it...

Okay, here's something to debate. Now we're all glad that the miners survived, but I heard on the radio that the PM is going to have a party in Canberra for the survivors, families and rescuers. While I'm sure that a party is called for, do we need one in Canberra? This sounds like Australian taxpayer's money is going to be spent so the PM can have a good photo op. I wonder if he'll wear a flightsuit?

The media just kept going on and on and on about it. It got kinda boring, especially considering the thousands of people that die in coal mines every year.

It sort of annoyed me the death of one miner was virtually ignored throughout most of the ordeal. But hey, great news that they are safe..

As Monkey said, the constant media coverage did get slightly annoying.

Damn, i thought this would be the unity thread for GlobalThermonuclearWar-fearers Anonymous and others who cringe at the mighty, righteous and all-loving smite of our holy father.

Perhaps the money for Canberra photo op should be given to the dead guy's family instead?

Well, there's two of us so far - we might have some luck waiting it out! Perhaps it wasn't for nothing after all! Besides, it makes a good cache.

True, it's even cold enough to keep my beer in. But more people need to build them. No offense, but I don't really want to be stuck with just you when the apocolyse comes :p .

Well if this wasn't enough to make me run screaming from the forums then that comment about cats in your mouth was.

G'night.

Rat, not "cats" in my mouth. I think you overestimate my abilities.
So you don't want to be stuck underground in a bunker for an undetermined amount of time with someone with some obvious improvisational advantages? :(

Oh well, my work here is done, apparently. Nasdravlje.

Tough blokes, I wouldn't last terribly long. As for the PM celebrating, let's hope his IR laws don't cause more of these incidents. We don't want Oz mines to be as safe as Chinese ones.

Why not? Relaxed safety standards would boost profits and help the economy significantly.

Hmm, does work in Commie/Capitalist China. I think something like 20,000 die in the mines every year (officially anyway).

Well they can just get better jobs. If they were working hard enough no accidents would happen.

In Australia, miners become miners because a mine happens to be nearby. In China, if you are a poor peasant male with little education for the rural area - you become miner or construction worker.

Chinese have no real concept of OH&S, honestly.
