Lost brain cells.

I had a few friends over last night, and we got to horsing around as often happens when I make a pest out of myself. Well, a cast-iron frying pan was waved ominously and due to an unfortunate swing, an unfortunte stumble and a very unfortunate zig when I should've zagged, I got bonked right in the center of my forehead.

The next thing I know, I'm on the couch surrounded by concerned faces and my wife is on the phone with 911. After assuring them I was alright, and my wife insisting I see a doctor, I let one of my friends drive me to the emergency room. Well, a few tests and an x-ray later, I am on the way back home. The doctor isisted that someone 'observe' me for 24 hours just in case, but said that he didn't see anything to be concerned about. Then he joked about me losing a few thousand brain cells I couldn't spare.

Well as I sit here I got to thinking about all the brain cells I've lost over the years. I do get hit in the head a lot. Does it show?

Any interesting stories about lost brain cells?

Well, I call it an 'unfortunate swing' because I have been assured that no physical contact with my skull was intended at the time.

As for gasoline fights, I shy away from such things. Hell, look what happens to me with simple cookware! :p

I've walked into the middle of the side of a doorway... okay that doesn't make sense. I must have hit myself harder than I thought. Doorframe! I've walked into the middle of a door frame. It was the middle of the night, and the lights were off. Normally I can walk through the house when there's low light. I have good eyes. That night though... I must have just been too tired. There was a huge gash just above my forehead that just refused to stop bleeding. Luckily it didn't scar, so no one will know expect you guys and my immediate family.

I've got a friend who had two concussions in 8 months (one ski accident, one mugging). He doesn't seem any different, unless he's not mentioning the voices...

If you were only out for a second you should be okay. Needless to say, this is the sort of thing you should avoid. Mahommad Ali is a guy who got hit in the head a lot and he is not in a good condition neurologically.

Interestingly, some scientists think we can date the invention of the club to the point at which our ancestor's skulls suddenly became a lot thicker.

I thought Ali had Parkinsons or something...is the risk of that increased by frequent pummeling? I don't know anything about boxing or degenerative neurological disorders.

So what you're saying is that guys that can take a lot of blows to the head are an evolutionary leap forward?

Groovy. :)

Getting pounded in the head will kill brain cells. You also lose brain cells as you get older. Combine the two and you can end up like Ali. I know his PR men say boxing had nothing to do with it, but that's like Exxon claiming that using oil has nothing to do with global warming. Kind of suss.

Also, you can lose mental functions and still appear pretty normal. People compensate, and often don't question why they can't seem to concentrate or do algebra in their head anymore.

There are plenty of stories about people with brain damage who appear normal until you realize they can't remember what happened 30 seconds ago, or you see they don't realize that the left side of their body exists, or their left hand corrects mistakes the right hand made, etc.

If there's anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiselled abs and stunning features ....

About 15 seconds.

Fifteen seconds is pretty bad, (although people rarely know just how much timed passed in an emergancy.) Unlike TV, being knocked out that long can indicate your brain has suffered enough damage to swell up in your skull and kill you.

Yes, my wife said something similar when she made me go to the emergency room. :p

edit: And I'm not aware of how much time passed 15 seconds is what I was told.

Folks, don't listen to the person who's just been knocked on the head when he says he's fine. A person who has just been whacked hard on the noggin is not in a good position to make wise decisions.

What about a person who has just been whacked hard on the family jewels? Or who has his testicles caught in a bear trap?

From the way you write about this, it is clearly unusual for you to lose consciousness from an impact to the head. Think of the selective pressure out in the wild for you to have plenty of spare brain cells. Boxers suffer, but then they might be knocked out a few times in one day and continue fighting. You will be fine, your brain does not have to last forever, only until you die, which is not is far away.

This is the second confirmed 'out cold' I can remember, though there are a couple times I 'greyed out' meaning I was awake, but not aware.

[QUOTE] Boxers suffer, but then they might be knocked out a few times in one day and continue fighting. [QUOTE]

This aint right. Trainers, proper trainers, take great care to protect their boxers. No boxer gets knocked out a few times in one day and continues fighting. Even though a knock out in boxing often doesn't involve a loss of consciousness, it is still very hard on the brain. People talk about boxers only having so many fights left in them because there is a limit to the amount of damage their bodies and brains can take. And it's the brain that is generally the weak link.

Sure it's possible to take a knock on the head and be fine. But too many knocks and you might need help to tie your shoe laces.
