Well, my fellow Canadians, it's our favourite patriotic passtime, besides voting for dysfunctional minority government, the census!

The census isn't a bad thing - it helps the Ministries decide based on demographics, the level of spending for certain programs (insert more propoganda ladden tripe).

Count Me Out (http://countmeout.ca/)

Now, here's why I'm giving directions on how to be a tool on your census - our goverment has outsourced part of the job of the census to Lockheed Martin, the US armament manufacturer. They're using technology provided by an American company instead of a Canadian one.

We strongly believe that the outsourcing of the software and hardware component of the 2006 Canada Census to a US subsidiary corporation, and in particular a subsidiary of armaments manufacturer Lockheed Martin, is an unconscionable breach of that goodwill and trust. Despite the assurances of Statistics Canada that Lockheed Martin employees will not have custody of Canadians' personal data, we are far from reassured that citizens' privacy will be preserved, and that the US Patriot Act would not come into play. We believe that the only way Statistics Canada can offer full assurance of privacy and confidentiality, is not to contract the Canada Census out at all.

In trying to save a few dollars by outsourcing, Statistics Canada has forfeited the "continued cooperation and goodwill" of Canadians that it refers to in its website.

And solely for the sake of argument, suppose that despite the contracting out to Lockheed Martin, confidentiality of census data could be 100% guaranteed. We still maintain the fact that part of our own Canada Census is being contracted out with public monies to the subsidiary of a major US armaments manufacturer is reason in itself for Canadians to offer only minimum cooperation with the May 2006 Canada Census. The Privacy issue is simply an important additional reason.

Now, remember, it is a federal offence to refuse to give census information, so, CountMeOut.ca offers alternatives to do breaking the law, while still allowing you to make a statement.

I filled mine out on paper, and I think that I didn't write in the names in exactly HOW I should've... but... what do I care? I still managed to be an asshole, and that's all that matters.

So, are you going to be a jackass? Are you going to fill in your census in a jackass-like fashion and create a need for people to enter the data manually? Or are you going to not be an asshole?

Count me in, or count me out?

OK. I am not a Canadian, so it is none of my business, but I am going to ask anyway.

How did the Canadian government come to choose Lockheed-Martin to provide the service? Was it by open tender? I would expect so. Each company that wanted to provide the service made gave a quote and the government chose on this basis. If this was the case then why the hell are you protesting?

If you want the business to stay in Canada go out and set up a company that can provide the service for less than Lockheed-Martin. Or do you really think that the government should spend more than it needs to of its citizen's money just to keep all contracts with Canadian companies?
