defined here as:
Ales -- ales, porters, stouts
Lagers -- lagers, pilsners, bocks
Well which do you prefer... the ales or the lagers?
Or do you drink them indiscriminately?
Please vote and discuss.

for me... ales.
I've had (at least) Murphy's, Boddington's (or some such name) and Guinness (sp?) stouts...
Bass and Newcastle ales...
some IPA or another...
a porter or two...
And loved them all.
To me they're smooth with full-bodied flavor.

For me, nothing beats a good, solid lager. Anchor Steam Beer is my favorite, hands down, though I drink a lot of Yuengling these days. A nice, balanced, hoppy ale is good, as is a balanced stout, but those are harder to come by, as it seems beermakers have fallen prey to the idiotic belief that more is alwys better, so they're always trying to come up with the hoppiest or chocolatiest or whatever-iest beer. Balance is the key.
About the only beer I go out of my way to avoid is pilsner, and that's because a good one is so hard to find.
I'd prefer a swift kick to the head over both.

Bass and NewcastleI love those two as well, especially Newkie. I also drink Tennants and Carlsberg on a regular basis, but they're nothing special - just your average lager. Much better than Bud/Miller or Carlings though.

Beer smells of poo and wee wee and is yuk yuk.
(I have voted though on behalf of my boyfriend who is a huge fan of dark ales, and finds the local ones here beyond compare)
I just think its all disgusting...........

i can give general differences:
Ales are smoother than lagers... richer flavor, frothier head, more filling.
Lagers seem more carbonated, are lighter, not quite as bitter-tasting (though there are some dark/bitter lagers).

Ale,
I feel so old when I say that :(
Probably ales, but I drink lagers a lot more for reasons of availability, and I enjoy them both.

Fresh. Cool. Ale.
Beer smells of poo and wee wee and is yuk yuk.Well, a lot of it is in essense yeast-pee with some yeast-flatulence for bubbles, so no surprise there :p
Largers, pilsners specifically. I don't mind some of the lighter ales, but most are too heavy for me, you can almost eat them >_<. Of course I'll drink them if there's nothing else around, I just wont enjoy them.

ahh, but aren't ales generally more alcoholic (gravity, or whatever the term is)?
So... by the fourth or fifth ale, you'll have forgotten, perhaps, that you're drinking ale. hehe
