Am I the only one who wishes they'd bring back those old Burma Shave signs? Not that I actually remember them, I just used to read them online and thought they were pretty neat.

Anyway, here is one of my own:

I'm tired of reading

About George Bush

So stick all these politics

BURMA SHAVE

(I used to have a BURMA SHAVE ACSII art for those who remember the days of all text-based internet communication. Le-sigh, I miss the days of the BBS and Telnet).

There was a Game I played, it was called Exile III. The creators were fans of those Commercials. There were a couple of Sign messages like that in it.

There's a Burma Shave style set of billboards in I-80 westbound somewhere in Davis, CA. I used to think it was unique until I found out about the Burma Shave ads. The excuse I always see for these dying away is that cars going too fast for the signs to work but that doesn't really make that much sense to me. I think they just died away.

But, like in Davis, you still see things like them now and then. I, too, would like to see more, but ah well...in the end, it's advertising and there's more than enough of that laying around...

Wasn't it Enchanter that had the actual signs along the highway, though?

Perfect, makes for a much more catchy ABAB rhyme scheme.

I wonder how many car accidents were caused by people suddenly slowing to read Burma Shave signs.

Probably not many, they were out on the open highways easily legible far apart in small easily read bits.

Plus folks tended to take responsibility for their own driving rather than trying to blame innocent billboards for accidents. Simpler times really.

When cars collide

We must place blame

But not on the drivers

And that's a shame

As I remember, you could write the company with your own suggestion for sign rhymes. And they credited you.

I saw a bunch of Burma Shave signs when I was a kid. We were taking a backroad up in Napa County and there they were. My folks got a kick out of them and that's how I remember almost forty years later.

Slow down Pa!

Sakes alive

Ma missed signs

Telnet was great! Back about oh, I guess 5 maybe 6 years ago, I had a friend who actually knew stuff about computers (I don't). Anyway, I was working at this place that had blocked internet access but he said "try Telnet, most Admin's don't even know what that is these days." So I used to play around on bbs' from work. Oh and he had an account for me on his own system so I could telnet to that and used his text web browser (back before everything on the web became an image - high speed access was more lmited then). It was great. Many good memories of dodging work.

I can't believe I'm almost thirty. Gah! Bring back the 90s, please! I don't want to get old!

I refuse to get old

So this I do vow

To build a machine

And travel to before now
