Neo-Federalism?

The actions of the Bush administration are starting to seem remarkably similar to the actions of the Federalist party. The immigration laws they're pushing are analagous to the Alien Acts, and some of the more extremist members of his party act like they would be in favor of Sedition if it were possible to get it by the American people. At least, that's the rhetoric they use. 'Criticizing the president leads to disunity and lack of morale.'

I'm sure the Federalists would have also been very much in favor of the Patriot Act if electronic surveillance tools were available to them at the time.

The Neo-Federalists in the Bush administration are trying to reduce the power of the states and establish a strong central government with control over what kinds of laws states are allowed to pass, as well as sweeping power over the lives of citizens. This is a comparison that ought to be made more often.

I don't think this should be a very surprising revelation. Since the Wilson Administration, the Federal Government has gotten increasingly larger as the needs of the United States have changed. Sure, it may not be the greatest of trends, but it is certainly not a new one.
