The New Diabolicals

I'm compiling an album through iTunes based on punk music from the 70s onwards. But there don't seem to be that many punk bands. Which punk bands are the best?

Dead Kennedys
Operation Ivy (ska-punk)
(counting hardcore too)
Dead Kennedys, the Partisans, Wire, Bad Brains, Inside Out, Suicidal Tendencies, Refused, Angelic Upstarts, Cock Sparrer, Bombscare, Stiff Little Fingers, Agent Orange, the Clash, Sex Pistols, Reagan Youth, Ramones...
Theres a lot of stuff i'd recommend but my definition of punk is more an aesthetic thing rather than a musical style, so i'm conscious of that and I left a few out that people would disagree with, and it's probably not what you're looking for anyway.

He wanted a list of punk bands...I didn't say which of those I actually like.
In case you were wondering, I don't particularly like these: The Dwarves, The Offspring, The Vandals (one good album, the rest is crap), Oi Polloi. Not a massive fan of the Vibrators or Rise Against, either.

The Clash...yeah....they kick a$$....
The Clash are one of the only punk bands I like. I'd say that the clash are the best.:)

Agreed on most counts except the Offspring.

Bad Religion, The Exploited, The Clash.
Dunno if RATM and Offspring are punk? If they are, then they too.

Well, same with my list really. I included stuff that I love and stuff I think is just okay.
I like the Dwarves and the Offspring started out awesome but died after Smash. The Vandals and Oi Polloi are just ok, but I haven't heard any albums - only individual songs, so what I haven't heard could well be crap. The rest of your list I mostly haven't heard enough to judge, or I simply don't like them. (eg. the Buzzcocks and Rancid)

THE FALL
MARK E. SMITH
Same thing really. 31 years (and over 40 members) of the best punk and post-punk around. Get 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong. A great intro. Any band of worth today recognises the importance of The Fall.
Early Nick Cave, Birthday Party and Bad Seeds pre-Murder Ballads.
Early Smiths actually... poppier, but still punk

I was worried someone wouldn't mention them :D
Also the Toy Dolls, The Buzzcocks, Against Me!, Violent Delight, The Stooges etc etc.
Don't want to think too hard about Punk bands at the moment though, It'll probably screw up my revision.

To hell with revision. I've a History exam tomorrow. The Fall are more important! My existentialism lecturer would agree! (he quotes him in class)
Ooh, ooh, Stooges.... and buy one Cramps album. Don't bother with more than one, they all sound the same...
stalin and Similization got most of the best and well known ones.
You say party! we say die!
yeah yeah yeahs
drop kick murphys
the distillers
agnostic front (its worth being crushed by sweaty half naked punks with mohawks to see them live)
the adicts
alkaline trio (sounded brilliant live)
fenix tx
the fugs (listen to CIA man)
the impossibles
something corporate
towers of london (absolutely crazy live)
i realise that not all of these bands are strictly pure punk but most of the obvious bands (nofx, clash, sex pistols, rancid.) have already been mentioned plenty. I have seen a few of these bands live and they all gave a very good performance.

Early Nick Cave, Birthday Party and Bad Seeds pre-Murder Ballads.

Angry Samoans
Oh, they're good. Forgot them.
Butthole Surfers
I really wanted to mention them, but every time I do in a punk thread, someone comes out and tells me that they're not punk. :p

If someone can actually give a definition of punk that doesn't make me shake my head in horror, I'll fly over to them and give them a big hug. In the early 80's punks in New York saw hip-hop as being a spin-off of Clash style punk... And the Fall blend Jazz and Punk on stuff like Hip Priest.

I would've mentioned them, but they already had been. Didn't really see the point in repeating. Otherwise, they'd have been one of the first bands in my list.
We had this thread before.
Refused won.
That's a moot point, because Refused win at everything.

The first LP is a cracker though (and thankfully free of their later neo-nazi bullshit).

In no particular order, and a pretty much random selection:
Amebix, Rudimentary Peni, Stalingrad, Monkhouse, Jim Carroll Band, Discharge, Poion Idea, Nation Of Ulysses, Universal Order Of Armageddon, Alternative TV, Flux Of Pink Indians, Conflict, Chaos UK, The Undead, Doom, Sore Throat, Sedition, Pink Turds In Space, Bleeding Rectum, Charred Remains AKA Neanderthal AKA Man Is The Bastard, Charles Bronson, Yuppicide, SFA, Rorschach, Neurosis, Zena Geva, Born Against, Tragedy, Pleasent Valley Children, Jawbreaker, Fuel, Health Hazard, Generic, John Holmes, Boxed In, Lynched, xKnifedx...
how long do you want us to go on for?
EDIT: even though the above list is far, far from representative of anything rather than bands that first came to mind, I do feel I have to add Snuff, Wat Tyler, Snowblood and Hard Skin to the pack there.

But there don't seem to be that many punk bands. Um, there are literally tens of thousands of punk bands. Here are some good ones that I didn't notice getting mentioned before:
The Gits, Bikini Kill, Propagandhi, Pennywise, The Wipers, The Lunachicks, Betty Blowtorch, Squat, The Subhumans, Citizen Fish, The Slits, The Plasmatics, The Meat Puppets, The Minutemen, Government Issue, The Dicks, The Crucifucks, M.D.C., D.O.A., D.I., D.R.I.
German Nightmare

Seems like most bands are covered here. I've got a few though
- Roger Miret and the Disasters
- The Queers
- Fugazi (Emo-core perhaps, and certainly stylistically different, but still punk at heart)
