What do you think of Michigan?

Hell, if PA gets a poll, then we sure as hell should!

I mean, we're so much cooler then the other states, we're in the shape of a mitten! Two, actually, if you look at the UP in the right light. No one else can hold up their hand to point where they live :D

Plus we got some damn good sports teams, hell even the Tigers are doing good this season.

First off I never been to Michigan, only know people who have- so my opinion is based on what I have heard and read. Overall it is a nice state, like any state it has its pros and cons.

But Florida kicks Michigan's ass any day of the week.

Agreed, and to prove the point. Floridas visiting Michigan= 0, Michigians visiting Florida= a few hundred thousand. :D

I've seen almost ever type of plate from ever state here in Florida, expect well Hawaii and Alaska.

BTW- the weathers nice here. And 1 hour drive to the nearest beach. :D

It is getting hotter though- stupid summer- the winters are so much better. 60 degrees all day- nice.

I'm biased, my ex lives in Michigan. They were kind of the rural hick version... with a twist! His parents divorced and his dad married his mother's sister, so they like to 'joke around' with the whole sister-cousin, uncle-dad, type of thing. They also have permission to hunt and then eat the deer that wander around wildly in their backyard sometimes.

So Michigan, in my opinion, is a majorly fucked up place to be.

At least I know that I'm unfairly predjudiced, and admit it, but there's really no point in my trying to change it now that I live in a different country.

i do like lots of trees, but i prefer them up in the mountains where the wind can blow most of the mosquitoes away.

I love Michigan!

I used to travel between Ontario and Michigan regularly for work. It's a very 'Canadian' kind of American State, (whether Michiganders want to admit it or not :p ), where I can drink a cup of Tim Horton's coffee and get full hockey coverage whilst enjoying some of Michigan's really great micro-brewery/restaurants.

Although I like to poke fun at the Michigan Accent (Mah, I got bax seat tickets for the hackey game!), I realize the Canadian one's not much better, eh? :)

I'm a big fan of Big Buck Breweries and Logan's Road House. I was also in a restaurant called the Redwood Lodge, or something to that effect. Bob Evan's sausage is just about the greatest breakfast sausage on the face of the planet! And IHOP's are a nice touch as well. (I'm sure there are Bob Evans and IHOPs in other states, but I can't find any in Ontario :( )

The Red Wings are a fantastic hockey team, and I love the rare occasion when the Leafs beat them.

I'm ready to adopt Michigan as another Canadian Province. Just give me the word!

(Incidentally, I'm surprised there aren't any more Michigander's popping up here... I know your out there because you get all riled up when I make fun of the accent!)

For Texas, I highly recommend the Corpus Christi area. The "North of the South", I call it.

And the town I used to live in, Port Aransas, is almost completely made up of Midwesterners, New Englanders, and their offspring. Great weather, too.

THAT's what's going to happen if you don't stop polluting our lakes and our air.

Michigan has a much stricter Environmental Protection Act than the US has. Michigan, and the other states on the Lakes have been making a great deal of progress, in tandem with Ontario and Quebec. Trust me we care just as much about the Great Lakes as you do. They're not just your lakes, they're ours too. Uncle Sam doesn't give two shits, but those of us near them are slowly getting our act together.

I used to travel between Ontario and Michigan regularly for work. It's a very 'Canadian' kind of American State, (whether Michiganders want to admit it or not ), where I can drink a cup of Tim Horton's coffee and get full hockey coverage whilst enjoying some of Michigan's really great micro-brewery/restaurants.

People here don't like to admit it, but Michigan is almost 1/2 American and 1/2 Canadian. I think that's why we talk to much smack about Canadians, it's because we don't like to recognize that we're so much like them.

I'm a big fan of Big Buck Breweries and Logan's Road House.

I stop at Big Buck Breweries whenever I'm heading up to the Soo. Tasty food, even tastier beer. However, if you want really world class Michigan beer you should try Bell's in Kalamazoo.

I've lived here 12 years of my 17 year life, and I've learned one thing: Michigan sucks.

I thought the exact same thing when I was your age. Then I left the state. I went to Germany for 2 years with the Army, decided I missed the US, and went to Colorado. It was there that I realized that it wasn't the US that I missed, it was Michigan. Now I'm back in Michigan, and I've found that I was right, it's Michigan I love, not the US as a whole.

Where's the poll answer stating Michigan kicks ass except Detroit of course?

And this is exactly what's going wrong in this state. A strong Michigan needs a strong Detroit. The rest of the state shuns Detroit instead of embracing it the way we need to.

Also, the people in the suburbs of Detroit need to realize that they're a part of Detroit. Instead of creating a downtown in Birmingham, they need to invest in the city. No major city can prosper when it's urban core is crumbling the way Detroit is. The Metro Detroit area has approximately 5 million people, while the city of Detroit has gone from 2 million to 900,000 since the 1950s. Imagine if Detroit wasn't a city of 900,000 surrounded by a bunch of smaller, far richer towns, but were one vibrant city of 5 million? How different do you think this state would be? As the Governor said in her State of the State address, "The only that should ever come between Detroit and Michigan is a comma".

I think 'What do you think of [homeplace]' threads all need to die.

I agree, but this was about my particular home.

I live in MI and think it sucks.

It'd be fine enough, if it wasn't frozen over for half the year. I have a lake nearby, but what good's having a beach 10 minutes (walking) away, when the lake is frozen solid so much of the time?! Plus, the sand at it is nowhere near as good as the stuff at ocean beaches. They actually have to truck it in.

Due to the weather, I am determined to move to Florida! I hate the cold and snow passionately.

As for the people/culture, it's okay...I've lived here all my life so it just seems "normal." On my trips to FL, one of the main things I notice is that Floridians aren't nearly as hurried as Michiganders. Which is another thing I like better about FL. There's also the bit where if you go 5 miles in the wrong direction you end up in a whole different economic zone, but I think every place has that.

well that wasteland called the Upper Peninsula passed its freaking snow and cold-ass winds on from Lake Superior (by way of Canada, and the arctic before that) to us in Minocqua, WI (way north-central WI)... which we weren't too happy about (except the ice-fishermen, maybe, or snow/cold enthusiasts).

The UP does have one of the cooler natural things to look at during the evening hours: the Paulding Light near Watersmeet. That is cool... if you're ever in the UP, get directions to it.

hehe

as for the Mitt, well, I can say this: There's one great college football team down there (Michigan Wolverines), one decent college football team (Michigan State Spartans), and probably some apples and cherries. Oh, and a metropolitan area of 4,000,000+ people (Day-twah).

Yeah, Kwami really needs to go. What Detroit needs is a mayor who will reach out to the suburbs and actually cooperate with them. Of course, that is all predicated on the idea that the suburbs will actually reciprocate, which doesn't seem too likely. But hopefully if Detroit were to elect a particularly cooperative Mayor the suburbs might give Detroit a chance.
