I read Dies the Fire and Protectors War last month and the idea fascinated me. I also constantly thought about what technology could be used in the Changed world. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, here's a link with a short explination. http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue382/books.html
Basically, no fast paced chemical rections work, there's a certain pressure limit that cannot be passed, and there's a very low limit to the amount of voltage you can produce.
For those of you that have read it, or have thought about what works, I have a few proposals to put forth as technology Stirling overlooked. Air rifles, da Vinci style helicopters, man powered airplanes, and possibly steam cannons.

Sounds like ASB's to me.

ASB's? What are those? The only thing I could come up with is Apocalypse Story Book, which is most likely wrong...

Alien Space Bats: the term used in discussion of alternate histories and the like to describe the dark forces behind the illogical sudden changes in the cosmos, without which there is little to hang the alternate world upon.

A fantastic series of books, perhaps even better than the 'Nantucket' series that spawned it.

However, 'da Vinci' style helicoptors haven't worked in our 'real' physical laws, so I can't really see them working in Stirling's world either.

(One of the principles that Stirling makes, that I love, is even though the general slide towards medieval practices are made, there are some who realize that the people who are living in this new age were born in the modern age, and don't think like 'medievals'.)

Wow, now I feel stupid. Now that you mention it, I remember exactly what you're talking about. I'm currently reading the Nantucket series, where they believe it just happened instead of some sadistic force. Oh, and would you guys think air rifles would work even with the pressure limit? I'm thinking that it's okay because the concept is largely based on springs and so forth.
