Porter Goss out at CIA

Seems a bit convenient. Doesn't seem like he gave much of a reason (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12646394/), but there were rumors swirling that he might be caught up in the latest extension of the Duke Cunningham bribery/hookers scandal. The article doesn't mention that possibility, but it doesn't give the usual crap either, the "need to spend more time with my family" dodge.

There were charges all along that he was too partisan for the job, and I think there's little question that the CIA has suffered under his lead. Hell, Bush is saying "He did his job ably," and you know what that means--he's fucked it up royally.

So will this wind up in a story filled with hookers and old, ugly white guys in the Watergate hotel? Inquiring minds want to know.

This is pure speculation, but I think it may be more of a "I'm getting the Hell out of here before it starts to stick to me" kinda thing. This president is so dead he's starting to smell and even the rats are starting to see it's time to bail.

Except for the hooker stories. Here's one (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=1684086&page=1) that seems to tag the #3 CIA person, Dusty Foggo--he's tied into the Duke Cunningham scandal. And then there's this story (http://www.harpers.org/sb-red-lights-on-capitol-hill.html) from Harpers:
he two defense contractors who allegedly bribed Cunningham, said the Journal, were Brent Wilkes, the founder of ADCS Inc., and Mitchell Wade, the founder of MZM Inc.; both firms profited greatly from their connections with Cunningham. The Journal also suggested that other lawmakers might be implicated. I've learned from a well-connected source that those under intense scrutiny by the FBI are current and former lawmakers on Defense and Intelligence comittees—including one person who now holds a powerful intelligence post. There might be another person who fits that description better than Goss, but I have no idea who it could possibly be.

The other reason I suspect something deeper than just getting out while you can is that this came out of nowhere. No person ready to take over, nothing---just a stroll to the White House on a Friday afternoon (convenient timing, too) and saying "I'm done." Kind of odd for a person as high up as the head of CIA.

We'll know for sure in a month, probably, because he'll either be under investigation or he'll write a book.

I'm really surprised this thread hasn't gotten more of a response. I mean, yeah, it's a Friday afternoon, but this is pretty big, don't you think?

It was certainly surprising. But on a day when Nicole Richie admits she's too thin it's gonna be hard to get people to pay attention to much else.

They'll do that easy--there's still 2 and a half years left. At the rate they're going, they'll blow past several eastern European countries.

Take it from someone who knows. Senior intelligence managers on the level of the DCI are political appointees and rarely, if ever have any RL analysis, gathering or field experience. Negroponte couldn't do the job if you gave him a flashlight and a map.

That being said, Goss before becoming a Congresscritter was a field man. Which initially boded well, the problem was he seemed to forget all of that experience he had and brought in people to work for him who had no clue about the job...a political appointee bringing in more political appointees.

Goss is no better than Judge Webster was or (God help us) Louis Freeh was over at FBI. Self-serving bastards who wound up hurting their agencies with their arrogance and incompetence.

Most senior managers at the level of Deputy Director or above are one of two things. Political appointees with no practical experience, or people with experience who somehow managed to make senior management. The former category, unfortunately outweighs the latter by a wide margin.

I'm glad Goss is gone, but the next political appointee may be worse than him and knowing President Bush, political affiliation and friendship will outweigh experience and suitability.

Kind of like Ben Barnake at the Fed, Bob Rubin was the natural successor to Greenspan, but his politics were wrong.

if someone gave an asshole convention and a hemoriod showed up That Would Be News The CIA said saddam had a bomb up his ass ...

ummm they kinda missed with that ....fire all the bitches and start fresh .

The CIA is not at this point a " relevant ' point in the US ...among those that give a shit ..at least...they need to prove themselves as ..ummm. somewhat ..professional...and credible ...like ..you know ...almost as good as the dudes that showed the missiles in CUBA..Waaaaaaaaaay back when ...

Then ...really screwed up with the " Bay of pigs shit "..but I digress...

A second or third rate so called inteligence service ..just wont ..cut ..it ..

Not when abomb could be ready to blow up in NY harbor ...or another group of misfit goony birds are ready to fly a plane into the whitehouse or your house......

Did you watch the news and the trial of that idiot ..THEY claimed had to know about 9-11 ?

If they were as dumb as dirt as this moron ....why did they crash planes into the world trade center ?? HOW did they ??? ...WTF was the FBI and all the alphabets doing ...a circle jerk ????

how can I respect the CIA after that trial and the fact that WMDS are not all over Iraq ?????

Fuck them...they need a enema .

No shit ...pun intended .

^^That's a fairly awesome post^^

I saw this story yesterday, but I didn't notice this thread - given the number of replies, it's not surprising. I did think there would be more commentary on this, but perhaps not enough information is yet out for people to make any informed statements about it.

'Porter Goss'? 'Dusty Foggo'?

Forgive me, but these sound like names from Star Wars, not the real world...

Exactly. That and the CIA's reduced power, I think.
