Logic Challenge

Seeing as it's Friday (well it is here), here's a fun logic game for you all.

http://freeweb.siol.net/danej/riverIQGame.swf

It's from Japan (I think) and is a bit like that farmer/fox/chicken test, albeit a bit more complicated.

You have 8 people on one side of the river: 1 man with 2 sons, 1 woman with 2 daughters, 1 police officer and 1 child prisoner (!).

You have to get everyone over to the other side of the river to finish the task, using the raft, but there are several restrictions.

1. Only adults (man, woman or policeman) can operate the raft

2. The raft can take 2 persons as a maximum load (and at least one of these must be an adult (see 1.))

3. The child prisoner must not be left unattended (i.e. without the police officer) on either side of the river unless she is alone. If she is left unattended with anyone else, she will attack them.

4. The man must not be left on either side of the river with either of the two girls when their mother is not also present. If this happens, he will bash one of the girls (!)

5. Similarly, the woman must not be left on either side of the river with either of the two boys when their father is not also present. If this happens, she will bash one of the boys. Yes, this is a bit disturbing.

I've done it once but I can't remember how. Perhaps someone could post a solution?

That's very difficult, I can't seem to work it out. :(

It is annoying. Apparently it's an IQ test given to business graduates.

Well if you really want the solution...

Policeman + Prisoner cross the river
Policeman comes back
Policeman + Girl cross
Policeman + Prisoner come back
Woman + Girl cross
Woman comes back
Man + Woman cross
Man comes back
Policeman + Prisoner cross
Woman comes back
Man + Woman cross
Man comes back
Man + Boy cross
Policeman + Prisoner come back
Policeman + Boy cross
Policeman comes back
Policeman and Prisoner cross

And everyone is across!!!!

* Take the policeman and prisoner across - bring back the policeman.
* Take policeman and a boy across - bring back policeman and prisoner
* Take man and other boy across - bring back man.
* Take woman and man across - bring back woman.
* Take the policeman and prisoner across - bring back man.
* Take man and woman across - bring back woman.
* Take woman and a girl across - bring back policeman and prisoner.
* Take policeman and other girl across - bring back policeman
* Take policeman and prisoner across.
All done.

Argh! No! I just previewed my post and someone beat me to it.

Yay, I can do it now! :)

It looks like they're chanting filthy communist slogans when you get it right though. ;)

That was a nice bit of brainwork for this otherwise unchallenging Friday ;)

The

tags are neat. You get a nice rectangular turquoise block.

That was cool. Though surely the prisoner would run off if left by himself?

WHOO HOO!!!!!!!! I did it! (without looking at the answer!!!)

(although my 4 year old helped me :()

it took me 13 minutes, I tried for ten by myself and then it took about 3 for my 4 year old to give me enough "hints" for me to figure it out.

sometimes it's sad that she is so much smarter than me :(

she just walked up and said "whatcha doin?" and I explained the rules and in about 25 seconds she said "oh, I can do that" and then gave me three hints

:D

reallly good ones.

Try this one. 3 priests and 3 cannibals. If there are ever more cannibals on one side, including the boat, then the preist(s) will get eaten. Have fun. I just like it because I think it's slightly amusing when the preists get eaten. c.c

I got it.
It's sorta long and annoying... but most logic puzzles of this sort are. :p
Probably took me 3 or 4 minutes to ferry everyone across, as I've been waiting in the lab for my morning appointment to show up.

That one was far easier. Solution:

One priest, one cannibal across, priest back.
Two cannibals across, one back.
Two priests across, one cannibal, one priest back.
Two priests across, one cannibal back.
Two cannibals across, one back.
Two cannibals across.
Done.

I didn't time myself, but it took me more than five minutes, prolly more like six or seven.

Don't worry about it; it most likely doesn't mean anything if you took over five minutes. I hope...

don't worry about it, I had to get a preschooler to help me. although if I could have probably done it faster and without her help if I had paid more attention to the rules and hadn't zoned out for a few minutes.

This reminds me of the episode in the 'The Office' where Tim and Gareth have to work together to solve the 'Chicken-Fox-Feed-Farmer' problem.

The woman is clearly insane. We get the police officer to shoot her in the head. Similarly, we won't need the child prisoner, so he has an "accident" in the river and, sadly, drowns. The abusive father is also unnecessary. We kill him and eat him for food.

Now it's simple. The heroic policeman just shuttles the four children across one at a time. Tada!

And now we can have ourselves a nice meal while we finish the task.

Pfft, I know it's easier. It's just amusing when you hop one preist into the boat and send him across. You can imagine him showing the other two priests the two fingers and shouting 'So long suckers!'.

Gold. Pure fucking gold.Goddamnnit. I was going to post something like that, but with the policeman arresting the man and woman for child abuse. The policeman would take child convict into the house on the other rivver, lock her in, bring over the other kids, set the house alight and then they'd all dance around the burning house happily ever after. However, I decided enough was enough I had to get on with some revision before I wasted the whole day. I come back now to find that someone else has been praised for something I could have posted. I exchanged praise on NS for success in my exams... :(
