South Americans reach energy deal

I guess the sky is not falling after all. Morales seems to know what he is doing; apparently not only rich whites can competently lead Bolivia, however much that might shock the usual skeptics.
The sort of cooperation that seems to be occurring here bodes well for all the countries involved.

Of course they are ok as long as cheap energy keeps coming there way. Morales is no dummy that is for sure. You don't get into that position the way he did being a dummy.

The same applies to Lula, Kirchner and Chavez.
Morales needs the cooperation of Brazil at least, as he needs access to ports. (Given that there is still a long running border dispute going on the Pacific side, he has to look to the Atlantic.) Brazil is looking to consolidate its position as regional power, which will be strongly bolstered if they can ensure that Argentina continues receiving gas from Bolivia. Kirchner needs the cheap energy as the Argentine economy is still precarious, and Chavez just likes the odd party.

Huh. Well, we'll have to see how this negotiation develop, but so far he's been playing it well. His people elected him to adopt a very hard stance on the issue and that's what he's doing. Let's hope he knows when to push and when to concede.
