I feel like an asshole

Dude111
05-05-2006, 03:35
...Because I dragged my younger brother across the carpet when we were fooling around, and now he has a rash on his back, and cries whenever someone touches it, and because I firmly (but not too firmly) put my foot on my other younger brother to stop him from going down the stairs, and my grandma screamed at me for it. So am I an asshole, or is it just a bad day?

Bad day, let it go.. I've had worse days.

You think it's fun or you get cought up in the moment, others disagree, you get pissed off or annoyed, you walk off.

Happens all the time.

you were probably having a bad day and got a little too rough, remember it only takes a second to hurt someone. Tell your brothers you are sorry, and remember what I tell the 2 year olds I teach "keep your hands, feet, and all other objects out of everyone else's personal space"

I am the oldest siblings, and with all the horsing around that goes on between us, it seems someone ends up crying about three times a day, so don't worry about one little incident. These things happen.

And besides -I can tell you from fifteen and a half years of experience - younger siblings - especially brothers - are always wrong and deserve what ever they get.

That's not being an asshole, being an asshole would be pushing your brother down the stairs and then racing down to spit on him and point and laugh as he was huddled in a ball crying.

My two daughters tried to cut their brothers willy off when he was a toddler as they (then aged 3 & 5) thought that he would then become a girl.
I at no time thought that they actually understood or meant to harm him....they only used 'kiddie' scissors, as this was the only ones they had access too...and later when the three of them fought and one of the girls had 2 teeth knocked out (milk teeth) they all got pretty shocked and realised that even play fighting can end badly, and luckily for me (and them!!) they didn't really do it after that....

Dude, you should be proud of yourself. You gave your kid brothers attention, and everybody knows they are in need of that in their early years to become a mentally healthy adult. You would be an asshole if you just ignored them, that would have been bad for a young soul.

And sure you gave a little pain, and sure you scared the shit out of the other but hey, who's perfect? Look at it this way.... they will have to endure pain in the rest of their lives and most definitely have to overcome even bigger scary moments. So in a way.... you just preparing them for adulthood because you care about them. A job well done Dude.
And their will always be those whom are in favour of the soft approach like your grandmother. Older people are commonly overprotective, they won't even bungee-jump anymore! Ignore them, you know whats right for your brother.... because you care.

Edit:
Oh and by the way, when your grandma persists in blaming you just tell you grandma that your parents are to blame. Tell her they didn't think ahead when they chose to live in a house with kids and elderly people. Lot's of accidents happen with stairs. Tell her she should talk to your parent why they deliberately put your, your grandma's and you kid-brothers health at risk. That'll teach them to see the big picture next time around when you invest quality time with your brothers...

OMG... glad I have 2 girls.

However, on Thursdays I teach a class of 2 year olds and one of them (a boy) is in the begining stages of potty training and can pull his pants down by himself but not up, anyway a few weeks back he comes out of the bathroom naked from the belly button down, and my 2 year old starts crying "what's wrong with his penis?"

Apparently he wasn't circumsized (which is pretty popular over here) and it scared her, I had to calm her down, all the while he is freaked out that something is "wrong with it". I finally calmed both of them down enough to re-dress him and then explained to both of them that there was in fact nothing wrong with his penis, and that's the way they look when you are born.

There wouldn't be much point in apologizing since the older one is three, and the younger is one year old.

No, you're an older sibling. As long as the younger sibling isn't permanently crippled or killed it's all part of growing up.

Let me tell you, being the youngest in my family, I've had many carpet burns, and I never cried. Even when people touched them. So I say you grab him and drag him aross the floor again (with the original carpet burn exposed) and actually give him something to cry about.
