On a more serious note, probably Brazil. I'd like to see the Dutch win though, I like their players & their style of play.

Brazil will take it. I'll be happy if Germany makes the Quarter Finals, very happy if they make the Semis, and awestruck if they go further.

But it's important to me that England loses horribly. ;)
And I suppose the same goes for the Dutch, but not to the same extent.

Well, no. But aside from that, I also don't like the story about Ronald Koeman and Olaf Thon's Jersey. Or about Hans van Breukelen and wishing Lothar Matthäus' death. Or Frank Rijkaard spitting at Rudi Völler...

The problem is these four. Too old, too slow, too attack minded. If any team decides to attack Brazil rather than run away and hide then Brazil are in trouble.

Lucio can not defend all by himself, as good as he may be.

Well... Scotland isnt even in the thing.. irritatingly, not that they have ever got past the first stage when they have been.

All I know is that it wont be England. Not anti-English, I support them next after Scotland, just everyone will get all hyped up saying there is a chance, references to 1966 an' all that. And then they will loose. Its the English way... be world class (unlike Scotland), but never quite good enough to win in the end.

This isn't 100% relevant to the thread, but I don't care.

Seeing as Rooney's almost certainly not going to play at the WC, what do people think are England's best options? Personally, I think we should play 4-5-1 (like Arsenal in Europe).
Robinson in goal; Terry and Ferdinand as centre backs, Gary Neville and Ashley Cole at right and left back; Beckham (inevitably...I'd prefer SW-P) in right-midfield, Joe Cole on the left, Gerrard and Lampard in the middle, with King (is he injured?) as a holding midfielder (if he is injured, try Carrick); Owen up front.

As far as I see it, this solves two problems - firstly, the fact that we have not other decent strikers once Owen and Rooney are taken out of it, and secondly that Gerrard and Lampard cannot play together in a 4 man midfield, because they are both far too attack-minded. With King (or Carrick) behind them, it will allow both of them to follow their attacking instincts, so only having one striker will not matter so much.

With that formation, I'd say England have a chance of doing well (semi-final or better).

Well, no...we always use 4-4-2, then wonder why the team is taken apart in the exact same bloody way as it always has been!!!

4-5-1, with Lampard and Gerrard both attacking, will be excellent. It creates more attacking options than a simple 4-4-2, and if the midfield does its job properly, the defence will be just as good as in a 4-4-2.

I second 4-5-1 with Aaron Lennon if we can in midfield (he's hitting good form right now, might well be worth the slot).

Failing that, Crouch/Owen up front would be a solid pairing (at least, assuming Crouch could score as much as he puts the ball back to the midfielders to score *rants about Cisse*)

Lennon doesn't have enough experience to be put straight into a major tournament. I'd advise playing him in any friendlies we have over the next year or two, as well as the easier qualifying matches for the 2008 European Championship.

And we shouldn't play Crouch. He's awful. Play Defoe, Bent, or Beattie (preferably one of the first two) instead of him if we have to play with two strikers.

Hmmm, personally speaking I'd dump Rooney out (odds are he won't be ready even for the damn final) and take Lennon at least in a smaller game and see how he goes.

Crouch isn't that bad although i can see the attraction of Defoe and Bent. Problem is, Crouch does much what Heskey does and Rooney always does it better than either and scores more to boot.

I think Brazil or Argentina, though I'd love for Sweden to win. We've got a pretty good team, but we should've had it a few years ago/in the future (or just a better schedule for the tournament).

I'm inclined to say Brazil will win.

As for England line up, I got for 4-4-2. Robinson playing behind Cole, Terry, Cambell, Neville. Carrick plays a holding role allowing Lampard to go forward with J. Cole and Beckham. Up front is Crouch and Owen (Walcott if Owen is unfit)

Lennon doesn't have enough experience to be put straight into a major tournament.

Pele only had 22 games under his belt before he went to his first world cup.

It's not experience you need, but confidence in your abilities. Hence Walcott being taken.
