A few minutes ago on Oprah, I saw a story of a woman that was burned alive by her SICK husband! Who and why would he DO such a thing?! She was assaulted, drenched in gasoline, and set. On. Fire. It took a whoppin' 17 sugeries to help her be human.

The who part of your question is a bit redundant...

As to why... some people are just vindictive jealous twats I guess.

Wait a minute... you can change species by being burned!?!? What was she before the surgeries?

She was burned by her husband, who is now in prison. For life I hope.

Before she was burned, she, I recall, was a black woman, or a white one, I don't know.

That's really ironic, because Oprah was interrupted by a Special Report saying Moussawi was gonna not be executed, but getting a life sentence.

You mean there was a time that it was acceptable?

Edit: Beaten to it. For the second time today.

In some way, yes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_by_burning#Historical_usage).

Hmmm...was it acceptable? I'm not talking by modern standards - I think we've established that it's not. However, and I know we can't actually establish this, did the main part of society find it acceptable? Or did they just go along with it because otherwise it would be them being burned?

Burning at the stake was probably considered "acceptable" as a punishment imposed by law or religion, or as a form of sacrifice. The comparison with this case doesn't hold though. I think burning your wife for no apparent reason was considered as sick and brutal back then as it is now.

Yeah, I realised I should've used that argument just after I posted, but I couldn't be bothered to edit it.
