Yep if your walking the dog and the litter warden sees the dog taking a crap and you walking away you get hit with a fine of €250.

It's never enforced that's why it's so high, just a scare tactic. I live in the middle of nowhere so police never check the road.

Heh... that's mean. I usually see signs for about $400~ just for that, and pity the fool who has a pit bull that isn't muzzled, neutured... or on a leash; the fine ie mighnty hefty.

or alternatively I think they should do something like the scarlett letter where they force her to wear a used garbage bag for a week and tattoo "litter bug" on her forehead

But a cheeto thingy will be eaten by a bird or well a person maybe some creature will eat it. Also a cheeto thingy is biodegradable and will be gone in a week or two due to weather conditions alone. This is unacceptable to fine that much for such a small misdemeanor, it is not even a proper littering offence as the evidence will dissapear. :(

compost heaps are also biodegradable, but it still takes time. if everyone was to throw something out of their car (even if its biodegradable) it would build up

Yes, food is biodegradable. So what? Question for ya... when you eat at home and you cant finish your food and decide to throw it away, why don't you just toss the contents out on your yard, sidewalk, driveway...? I'm guessing you dont do it and I'm guessing it's because it's quite ugly. I'm betting that your neighbors wouldn appreciate it either. I think it's important that we keep our environment beautiful and if everyone just threw food on teh ground when they were done with it instead of in the trash, we'd have a big ugly mess. If it is wrong for everyone to do it, the it is wrong for one person to do it no matter what amount of food it is.

Thats ridiculous. Look throwing out a full meal on someones doorstep and throwing out one cheese doodle on the ground are not the same thing. And I have thrown McDonalds french fries out the window of my car to a seagull. A very amusing experience that I'd do again.

Like I said above - the amount of food thrown out the window doesnt matter - it;s littering and it's ugly. And McDonalds fries dont biodegrade - it's possible that the same goes for cheesey poofs. Littering sucks. Dont do it again :P

The amount doesn't matter only if you're being a dick about it. I'm not challenging the legality of it but the fact she was actually penalized for such a dumb thing. I'm as big a person on saving the planet as anyone, I have numerous threads on Global Warming, but this equates to near mockery of a serious problem. A simple, "Pick that up" would have sufficed if anything. McDonalds fries biodegrade when passed through a seagull.

okay then where do you draw the line at what amount is okay to litter? a pack of fries? a hamburger? where does it stop being okay to litter and start becomign a problem to you? is any amount of food okay to dump on the ground as long as it is biodegradable?

btw this isnt about saving the environment and has nothing to do with global warming. it's about litter being ugly and I dont want to live in a dump.

And I personally think it's truely dickish to litter at all. Trying to keep people from littering might seem dickish, and perhaps it is quite unpopular to think this way as when I look at the city streets it seems people would rather toss their trash on teh ground than find a bin too often.

Just base it on common sense. Throwing a hamburger at someones house and throwing a hamburger into the woods are not the same offense... unless you want to be a dick and cite the same law. I'd take the hamburger house peg as a personal insult but I'm not sure it would be aesthetics that would first come to mind. I would probably just wonder what I've done to you that made you want to throw hamburgers at my personal property.

BTW, I'm not calling you a dick... I mean unless you got me in trouble for throwing a hamburger into the woods. Then I'd probably call you a dick.

OK, but common sense doesnt fit in here as far as I am concerned. Either it's okay to throw food on teh ground or it isn't. If someone chucks their hamburgers out the window while they are driving I would want them fined.

Dogshit is biodegradable too (and often times just a little nugget), but we want people to pick that crap up dont we?

Has there been a rash of small amounts of junkfood sans wrapper strewn about this town? When you step in cheeto, do you complain about the stink? Are you nauseated when the soles of your boots turn orange?

Hell yeah! Have you ever walked through half rotted, sodden and mushed pulp on a rainy day, near a fast food place?!

Would it have been different had it been... 2 Cheesits? 3? Emptying the whole pack onto the road? Whhere do you draw the line?

If a blind eye is turned, it is merely condoning the act of littering. It undermines efforts to get people to be responsible and act accordingly. If they have to be reminded to act civilised by a hefty fine, then so be it.

I can bet you she will think twice before littering again!

"75 pounds is too much, blah blah blah."

Well of course it's a lot of money. How the fuck do you think deterrence works? You think she’d care if it were 5 pounds? Next time she'll think twice before she acts like a lazy pig. Personally, I feel littering isn’t so much an insult to the environment as it is to yourself and the rest of mankind. It says “Hi, I was raised by animals and I don’t give a crap about basic decorum.”

Picture this: The guy ticketing the lady holding up the piece of evidence and thereby attracting all the pigeons which then take a united dump on him :D

Trees don't get fined for dropping their leaves, either - so stuff like crisps or the tobacco from a cigarette bud including the burning tip (not the filter part) should be okay. The next rain or bird will take care of it.

But £ 75,- is a pretty hefty fine.
