Tricky question...

So todya I'm in philosophy (not right now obviously - that's merely a narrative device as I'm sure you're all aware) and we're revising philosophy of religion, so naturally the ultimate question comes up - Lost or 24?

For those that don't know what I'm talking about, fear not, the poll shall provide for you, but I need to know - the philosophy lesson left it at a deadlock, so I must know!

Which show do you prefer? And, if you can be bothered, why?

24.

Lost is stupid, complicated, pointless and boring. 24 has terrorists, gunfights and Kiefer Sutherland.

...all the reasons I don't like 24.

24. Hands down. It has Keither Sutherland in it. It will rock. Chuck Norris may be able to round-house kick you to death, but Keither can snipe you from a hundred miles away.

I didn't really like 24, although I admit I didn't watch much of it. I felt that if you take away the gimmick of it being all set within 24 hours it didn't really have much to reccommend it.
As for Lost, I don't think it really works as the mystery they present it as. It's just too open ended and they don't give you enough solid idea of what rule sheet they're working off. When it started it was realistic then they added hints of the super natural, and then obvious supernatural elements, but the characters didn't seem fazed by it and so on. If they keep doing that there's no point speculating because they'll just change the rules on you again.
But despite that it does have interesting characters and it's easily watchable.

24 hands down. Although I cynically find it difficult to escape the logistical improbabilities of a lot of its storylines, it's still one of my favourite programmes ever.

24 has the Jack Bauer killcount website. Does lost have that? No, I assume.

Easily Lost for me. 24 had two good series (well, one great series and one pretty good series), but series 3 onwards is an unmitigated pile of parrot droppings in comparison. I loved the first series of Lost, and the second series started yesterday. Still looking good. I just hope the tail section survivors are as interesting.

I don't watch either, I suspect they probably come on the same time as something else I do watch though since I haven't ever seen either, not even a small peice while flipping channels.

I watched Lost when I downloaded the entire first season. It was great, I couldn't think about anything else. Then I had to drag along with the second season's shitty schedule, and it got pretty boring and repetitive. I stopped watching, and now I can't be bothered to start over again. I have enough to do.

As for 24, it looks boring and incomprehensible.

You could download much of season 2 of Lost now. I think it's up to episode 20 in America now...could be wrong. It might even have finished.

24 is rush limbaugh's favorite show

(what logical error is that? damning it by association)

ive never watched it. i might catch it in dvd some day when i can watch a whole season at once

lost is an amazingly good show. its going to be a very sad day for me when they lose focus and it turns out to all be hurley's halucination in the mental hospital.

If you take a look at the Lost wiki, there's a section on theories that have been discounted by the makers of the show - one of the ones there is that it's all in the head of one of the characters. It's also not that they've died and they're in purgatory...

oh i assume they have. i know that the creators have the entire story arc worked out in their heads

heres the problem

they have already given the producer another show. theyll give him more. writers move on. sooner or later this show gets shoved into the hands of "lesser men". THEY dont care about the original story arc. pretty soon they have gilligan island crossovers, guest appearances by regis philbin and sayid wrestles a giant shark.

its happened to better shows.

I could imagine that Sayid might wrestle a shark anyway. It wouldn't be that strange, all things considered.

:p It'll get explained, don't worry. Though I would be amused if it doesn't, and you go on an armed rampage to the offices of the studio and demand an explanation.

I feel like its the Lost version of the Chewbacca defence.

Niether.

Haven't seen Lost (or even really know what it is about), but the way it has been described to me makes it sound like a poor man's The Prisoner.

24 got boring somewhere around the hundreth torture scene. Also the way that the show demonised anybody who had the slightest doubt that torture was the way to go, got similarly annoying.

No, no, no. In Lost, they are...well, em..... lost.

In The Prisoner, he was... well,... a prisoner. :D

24 because its got more to it. Lost gives the impression theyre trying to drag it out as long as possible. (also the writer said he had seen it as a 3 season story, but the studio says he has to make it last 7). House is better than both of them though.

incidentally if Jack maintained his kill rate from series 2 over a whole year he would get through almost 37000 people. He is so cool.

Neither of them have really captured my attention. I think it's because Lost on when I'm usually at my french class & 24 is tends to be on quite late here.

I'm a 24 addict... I would marry Jack Bauer if I was a woman and I would comfort him after his long days of killing and torturing domestic terrorist suspects. 24 has it all; a crazy storyline, really fast pace, thrilling countdowns of WMD's, it's mostly crazy rich americans that's behind the threat in the end, loads of tech bollocks, guns, bombs, cars and best of all, Nina Meyers... she was smokin' and now she's dead... damn you Jack!

I don't bother with either one. Network TV is utter shit.

If I'm going to spend time in front of the idiot box, I'm either going to watch a movie, or a show on the History Channel or the Discovery Channel or something...a show I can actually learn something from.

Neither one. I watched a few episodes of both and found both about equally boring.

But I'm quite curious. about the philosophy class thing. Did this question actually have any relationship to a philosophical discussion or was it just a random conversational topic?
