Your Sports Teams Greatest Ever moment!

Harlesburg
03-05-2006, 12:46
Basically i got the below email from my favourite sporting team, the Cronulla Sharks, they play Rugby League which is different to Rugby Union i prefer Union more but The Sharks above all else.

So i am asking what would you regard as the Sports team or teams that you support, greatest ever moments would be?

Two of the most memoriable for me would be This is one of mine....
THE LG MERMAIDS

The Sharks cheerleaders have kept the crowds at Toyota Park entertained for many years. Starting off as cheergirls, baton twirlers and now the LG Mermaids - they have certainly entertained thousands of people over the past 40 years!

PARRAMATTA LOSS

Sharks lost 74-4 at Parramatta Stadium, with "Sir David Peachey" getting sent off for using his hands when talking to referee Shane Hayne.
RICKY SCHEIN
That was a bloody outrage David Peachey was having a chat to the referee and as he spoke he was moving them about.
The ref told him to stop and Peachey said somethig along the lines of...'this is what i do when i talk'
Then the Ref sent him off!
Complete Bullshit!!!
The Sharks down by a man early in the game and in one of the worst calls ever pretty much played negative football and it could almost be said lost interest and fair enough too, the ref got the arse.

That also reminds me of another time Greg Bird got sent off for Kneeing a man on the ground it was fair enough and the Sharkies got hammered again.

SHARKS MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS

In what will be the Sharks 40th season playing elite level rugby league, firstly in the NSWRL competition and now in the NRL, a series of exciting promotions have been planned to commemorate the milestone.

Please find below moments number 1-40 nominated by Sharks Fans as their most memorable.

TITLE
YEAR
DETAILS
SUBMITTED BY

AMCO CUP WIN
1979
Cronulla's 22-5 victory over Combined Brisbane in the 1979 Amco Cup. Steve Rogers, playing fullback, kicked five goals to guide the Sharkies to their first and only title - just a year after losing their second Grand Final to Manly.
BERNARD O'RIORDAN

GRAND FINAL NUMBER 1
1973
The Sharks first ever grand final appearance in 1973. When English champion halfback Tommy Bishop led a young Sharks side into what is now known as one of the toughest Grand Finals on record. Sharks went down 10-7 to Premiers Manly, but it was a proud effort by the young Sharks.Every Sharkie gave there best and came so very close to knocking off the red hot favourites.
BRETT ROBERTS

GRAND FINAL NUMBER 2
1978
We were one of the top sides all year' Greg Pierce remembers - without their Skipper and key player Dane Sorenson the Sharks went in to their 2nd Grand Final against Manly. With the result a draw (11-all - the second draw in two years) they were taken to a replay match the following Tuesday, to be beaten by the Eagles 16-0.
ALF MAZZITELLI

LOCAL DERBY WINS
1967-2006
All victories over St George - 1967 to 2005! The Dragons and Sharks have met 76 times, with the Sharks winning 35 times, losing 38 times and 3 draws.
SAM MALFROY

SUPER LEAGUE GRAND FINAL
1997
Beaten by the Broncos 26-8, the Super League Grand Final played at ANZ Stadium in front of 60,000 people - the largest crowd most of the Sharks players had ever played in front of and the largest grand final crowd since 1975.
MICHAEL BACK

VAGANA'S GOLDEN POINT TRY
2004
I've never experienced such a vast emotional spectrum in so short a space of time. From Gibson's try not being refferred to the video ref, to Daniel Wagon choosing to kick off. To Noddy's immortal line - "We're going sweet that way." And oh yeah, Vagana's first official try as a Shark. Loved it.
CHRIS CHONG

ET & MITCH HEALEY'S FAREWELL
2000
A farewell described as "befitting royalty" with a red carpet half of the length of Toyota Park took ET and Mitch onto the stage to farewell their fans! ET unable to play due to injury watched from the sidelines as Mitch Healey took to the field. in his last game. What a huge crowd and a great win to send off the most loyal Sharks player of them all, unbelievable stuff!
MICHAEL DARMADI

2005 MANLY THRASHING
2005
I think the most memorable moment in the history of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks is the 68-6 thumping of Manly in the 2005 Telstra Premiership when Brett Kimmorley and his halves partner at that time, Nigel Vagana, each scored hat-tricks.
PRASANNA BHASKARAN

ROGERS vs JANSEN TRY

That game against St George where Steve Rogers intercepted on our tryline and ran the full length down the eastern touchline with Jon Jansen bearing down on him from the south western corner. Rogers got there with metres to spare but it looked in doubt about 30 metres out.
MARK BARLING

PARRAMATTA LOSS

Sharks lost 74-4 at Parramatta Stadium, with "Sir David Peachey" getting sent off for using his hands when talking to referee Shane Hayne.
RICKY SCHEIN

SATURDAY NIGHTS AT TOYOTA PARK

The introduction of Saturday nights at the then "Caltex Field" drew crowds where other clubs failed. Temporary lights were set up around the field to celebrate the first Saturday night game along with ET's 200th game for the club. Saturday Nights at Toyota Park have now become a regular event in the Sutherland Shire and Shark fan community. A night out with friends and family under the big lights is a tradition amongst many.
ROB KING

THE LG MERMAIDS

The Sharks cheerleaders have kept the crowds at Toyota Park entertained for many years. Starting off as cheergirls, baton twirlers and now the LG Mermaids - they have certainly entertained thousands of people over the past 40 years!
BARRY PARKES

ET'S 300TH GAME
1999
ET's 300th game against manly in 1999! We absolutely belted them and ET crossed after Nick Graham set him up within the last ten minutes - the atmosphere was euphoric!!!!
PAUL FOGWELL

ROGERS POINT SCORING RECORD
2001
In 2000 Mat Rogers scored 212 points, from 18 tries and 70 goals. This took his total point scoring record in sight of Steve Rogers overall points scored record. In 2001, after shoulder reconstructive surgery and signing with the NSW Waratahs Mat took the record to have scored a total of 1311 points for the Sharks.
CRAIG CONNORS

BARRY 'BEAR' ANDREWS GOALS

The way Barry Andrews used to kick goals from halfway with his toe - he kicked a Penalty goal from 5 metres on our side of 1/2 way, a 55 Metre goal!
FRANK 'OOBY' & JIM O'BRIEN

NEWCASTLE RECORD BREAKING WIN
2002
One of the best moments in Sharks history was the win over Newcastle in 2002. It is the clubs second highest victory ever in it's 40 years, and it was an absolutely amazing match. Brett Kimmorely put Andrew Johns in his place. Brett also got a highest individual point score ever in the clubs history taking over both Mat and Steve Rogers. Also some magnificent tries took place, espescially the try along the sideline to Paul Mellor.
SAM MALFROY

MINOR PREMIERSHIP (1999)
1999
The fantastic 1999 season where we won the minor-premiership (it was all good right up until we got knocked out a game from the grand final).
MATTHEW WILLIAMS

SUPER LEAGUE OPENER
1997
With the Sharks game changed over to a Monday Night game, the Sharks were winners over Canberra (one of the best teams in the competition and the side tipped to be grand finalists) 26-4 at Sydney Football Stadium. Playing a much quicker game and with players allowed to select their own numbers (Mat Rogers in 45) the 26,000 crowd saw a 'match dominated by Cronulla'.
PAUL WOODLAND

SEMI FINAL AGAINST WESTS

I was only 8 years old but I remember the image of Steve Edmonds taking a intercept at the SCG against Wests in the finals and scoring under the posts for us to go to the Grand Final.
ANTHONY STEAD

SEMI FINAL AGAINST BRONCOS
1999
After winning the Minor Premiership, the Sharks went into the Finals series playing 8th placed Brisbane Broncos. With a 42-20 win, the Sharks including players ET, Nick Graham, Mat Rogers, Russell Richardson and Martin Lang then went on to play the Dragons after a week off.
GEORGE CLAY

SEMI AGAINST BRONCOS
1996
Cronulla won 22-16, some spectacular tries during that game including the beautiful scrum play ending up in a Peachey try, and the Richie Barnett snatch from a Mitch Healey bomb.
MICHAEL DARMADI

PRELIMINARY FINAL WIN VS DRAGONS
1973
Beating St George in the 1973 Major preliminary 18 to nothing at the SCG!! Tommy Bishop scored a solo try burrowing over at the southern end in front of the hill. I think we all realized that the Sharks were close enough to the real thing after that game.
JOHN LOVATT

UP UP CRONULLA

The day they brought the UP UP CRONULLA song back to Endeavour Field and the singalongs!
MATT ROBERTS

ET'S RECORD BREAKING TRY'S
1991
ET broke Steve Rogers tryscoring record (82 tries) during 1991 and quickly headed over the century of tries for the club. ET still holds the record for most tries scored - a total of 165. David Peachey is the closest with 110.
SAM COOK

FIRST GAME AT ENDEAVOUR OVAL
1968
In 1968 mid season our club moved from Sutherland oval to Endeavour Field becoming the only Sydney club to own their ground. In our first match on our new ground we defeated Parramatta 10-7.
BRETT ROBERTS

SHARKS IMMORTALS ANNOUNCEMENTS
2002 & 2005
In 2002 the first three Sharks Immortals were announced - Steve Rogers, Gavin Miller and Andrew Ettingshausen - at the Four Season in Sydney. In 2005 Tommy Bishop and Greg Pierce were inducted as Sharks Immortals.
NATHAN TURNER

STEVE ROGERS JAW BREAKING
1985
A high shot by Bulldogs hooker, Mark Bugden, saw him suspended for nine weeks and Sludge's football career finished shattering Sharks players and fans.
MATT ROBERTS

GRAND FINAL WINS - PRESIDENT CUP & RESERVE GRADE SIDES
1994
The 'best ever' President's Cup team and Reserve Grade team included star players Mat Rogers, Robbie Kearns, Michael Porter, Andrew Pierce & Paul Donaghy. A special Grand Final day in 94 that 'underlined the depth of outstanding rugby league talent that existed in the district'.
LUKE WARATAH

OPENING OF THE ET STAND

I think one of the most memorable moment was when the Andrew Ettinghausen Stand was uncovered for the very 1st time. I will personally never forget that. I am a member of the Sharkie Army and we are behind the Sharks all the way until we win our 1st premiership.
TIM BOWREY

MARTIN LANG'S TRY AGAINST BULLDOGS

Went with a Bulldogs supporter, and tried to be diplomatic as Cronulla ran the score up higher and higher. But then Martin Lang, who scored 2 tries in his entire career, crashed over to score.
Dykes met him with a wild flying clothesline in celebration, Sharks fans everywhere went out of their minds, and yes, I laughed at my poor Dogs supporting friend. Cause they'd actually let Marty Lang score. The Sharks beat the Bulldogs 52-10.
CHRIS CHONG

DAVID PEACHEY'S TRIES

All the Peachey tries inches from the dead ball line.
DION MOON

BRONCOS PLAY OFF VICTORY
1989
Brisbane were strong premiership favourites leading into the finals, expected to easily roll over the Sharks. However, Cronulla produced one of the greatest performances by any time for that whole season. Jonathon Docking had the best match of his career, Gavin Miller was at his magnificent peak. ET and Sparkles in their vintage best form, Alan Wilson was making conversions from the sideline. This was one of the best Sharks performances for all time.
SAMEH YOUNAN

1967 - THE YEAR OF THE SHARKS
1967
The introduction of the Sharks to the Sutherland Shire with their home ground at Sutherland Oval. The Inaugural team including Captain Monty Porter took on the Eastern Suburbs Roosters on the 2nd April 1967 and beat them 11-5 in front of 6,137 people at The Sydney Sports Ground.
BRETT ROBERTS

ROTHMAN & DALLY M MEDAL WINNERS
1968-2001
With the Inaugural Rothman's Medal going to Sharks Terry Hughes (1968) it set up a great list of players to win the medal - including Ken Maddison (73), Steve Rogers (75), Barry Russell (88), Gavin Miller (89), Paul Green (95). The Dally M Awards saw Immortal Steve Rogers (81) win a major award again, along with Gavin Miller winning twice (88 &89) and Preston Campbell beating Andrew Johns to the post in 2001.
TONY EVANS

SOUTH SYDNEY WIN
1970
Beating the great South Sydney team in 1970 by 25 points to 6 (five tries). Without doubt a major milestone in the history of the club. Special mention to the big win over the previous years GF winners, Balmain in round 15 that year as well.
JOHN LOVATT

MANLY GAME COMEBACK
2002
Coming from 18-0 down at halftime to beat Manly 46-24 at Brookvale in 2002
MATTHEW WILLIAMS

THE END OF THE BRONCOS WINNING STREAK

An undefeated Broncos team came to Shark Park in about round 6 or so undefeated in their debut year. King Wally & Alfie ran out not knowing what an ambush we set that day. Within 20 mins it was 20 - 0 and wasnt the hill going beserk up the northern end. It was the broncos first ever defeat and what a beauty.
ANTHONY STEAD

ROGERS RETURN TO FORM VS KNIGHTS
2001
Mat Rogers returned from a shoulder reconstruction in about Round 22, v Newcastle. 42 – 0 at half time was certainly memorable (as was Joey Johns’ attack on Adam Dykes), but the length of the field try finished by Paul Mellor was the highlight of my Sharks experience. It was the icing on the cake to a perfect Spring afternoon at Shark Park and our record score.
SYD CHAPMAN

ET'S DEBUT YEAR

Jack Gibsons allstar Parramatta team came to Shark Park in ET s debut year. Early on in the match Brett Kenny sliced through and confronted ET just outside the 20m line, did his customary step got passed and was in the clear. As Rex would have said " put the glasses down" and no one in the crowd that day expected the unbelievable turn & chase ET pulled off, with Kenny grassed a metre out.
ANTHONY STEAD

KIMMORLEY'S POINT SCORE RECORD
2002
In his first season with the Sharks, Brett Kimmorley overtook Mat Rogers points scoring record with a huge 251 points in a season (with a club record at the time of 28 points scored in one match against Newcastle).

Most memorable moments anyone?

Hmmm...possibly Arsenal 1-0 Parma, in the Cup Winners' Cup final 1994. Or, though I don't particularly like remembering it, Real Zaragoza 2-1 Arsenal (AET), with Nayim lobbing Seaman from the halfway line.

FA Cup final last year - totally didn't deserve to win, but then Man Utd didn't score either...

And I think Lehmann's penalty save in the 90th minute of the CL semi-final 2nd leg (with the aggregate score 1-0 to Arsenal) will go down as a memorable moment in Arsenal's history.

Also, about half of Henry's goals. The backheel against Charlton, the flick, turn and shot against Man Utd, the (fucking awesome) goal against Spurs when he went past pretty much the entire Spurs team...

For England - in my lifetime, it has to be one of England 1-1 Germany (1990 World Cup semi-final), England 4-1 Holland (Euro '96 group stage), or England 5-1 Germany (World Cup qualifier 2001). Otherwise, clearly the 1966 World Cup final.

June 20th 2000, the New York Mets came back from a 7 run deficit, scoring 10 runs in the eighth inning, as I was stuck on a highway right outside the stadium. 1990 Premiership: The drought breaks

Collingwood 2.5 8.9 11.10 13.11 (89)
defeated
Essendon 2.2 3.5 5.6 5.11 (41)

EVERY Collingwood supporter is aware of the heartache following the 1958 premiership.

Collingwood played in nine grand finals (including the 1977 draw against North Melbourne) to the start of the 1990 season without tasting the ultimate success.

It seemed the Magpies were destined never to win another flag, until former Hawthorn champion Leigh Matthews guided the club to the 1990 grand final.

Collingwood finished the home and away season in second position behind Essendon and then drew with West Coast in the qualifying final after Eagle forward Peter Sumich missed a last-gasp chance for victory. Collingwood won the replay by 59 points and, importantly, Essendon was forced into a two-week break because of the draw.

Collingwood then defeated the rusty Bombers by 63 points in the second semi-final to emerge as the flag favorite, even though the Bombers defeated West Coast by 63 points in the preliminary final.

Although the first quarter of the grand final against Essendon was tight, the Magpies grabbed control with a burst of goals in the second quarter. Collingwood led by 34 points at half-time.

Although Magpie star Gavin Brown earlier had been flattened, his teammates decided to concentrate on the job in hand and, inspired by the late Darren Millane (who played with a broken thumb) and skipper Tony Shaw, Collingwood won by 48 points to ease the pain of a 32-year premiership drought.

off the top of my head:

Green Bay Packers
The 1960s -- Lombardi leads the Pack to 6 (I think) NFL championships, including the first two Super Bowls. The Packers have 12 championships/Super Bowls overall.

Wisconsin Badgers
Football:
a) 1994 Rose Bowl win over UCLA (21-16), UW's first Rose bowl victory.
b) 1999-00 season: Ron Dayne breaks the division 1A career rushing record
c) 1999 Rose bowl win over UCLA (38-31), UW's second under Alvarez.
d) 2000 Rose Bowl win over Stanford (17-9), UW's third RB in seven years.
e) 2006 Capital One Bowl win over Auburn (24-10). Coming in heavy underdogs against the hot Tigers, the Badgers outgained Auburn something like 550-250 and completely dominated the game.

Basketball:
a) 1942 (?) national champions
b) 2000 Final Four
c) 2005 Elite 8

Hockey:
a) Six national championships in men's hockey
b) Men's and women's teams BOTH win the national championship in 2006

Milwaukee Bucks
Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Oscar Robertson (think that's right) lead the Bucks to the NBA championship in about 1969.

Milwaukee Brewers
1989 or 1990 -- Brewers start the season 13-0
1982-83 -- Brewers go to the World Series.. led by guys like Paul Molitor, Robin Yount, Don Money, Cecil Cooper and Pete Vuckovich

Milwaukee Braves -- won a couple of world series

Wins again in 1974. Because "best" is measured by success. :p

World War Two was all about preperation for the 54 World Cup!
You killed off Poland(Who were the best), the British didn't like playing World Cups the French just wanted to put one in their own net and America was still to busy trying to understand how their football used very little foot to ball action.

My teams greatest moment will happen tomorrow night in Eindhoven (hopefully), but after the last 2 comebacks when we needed to score 4 times to win, I hope they make a better start to the match.
