Actually he does things that no human being is supposed to be able to do. I'd love to see you try to pull off any of his stunts. Go ahead and get a video camera and try to spend 35 hours standing in one spot on top of a 100 foot pole (or if you are really adventurous, then spend 3 days encased in ice)- I'll be looking forward to seeing you fail.

David Blaine is awesome - you are just jealous.

Yes, you have to admire the utter utter foolishness of the man. By all means, come to Britain, we won't take the piss, honest!

In fact every conversation in England at that time went like:

Young person: David Blaine is starving himself in a box by Tower Bridge.
Old person (say your grandmother): I know, I saw it in the paper. Good on him.
Young person: Why? Its very pretentious.
Old person: Well, it is for charity isn't it?

I think David Blaine should try something interesting for a change, i.e. not just remain in an enclosed space for an arbitrary number of days whilst tourists gawp at him.

How about trying to catch a bullet fired from a revolver in his teeth? If he managed that I'd be impressed, and even if he didn't quite do it, I'd still be happy.

I can't believe so many people hold so much contempt for Blaine. He's a wanker/idiot/twat/**** for testing the limits of human endurance and pullign off what nobody else has? For doing awesome street magic tricks that blow people away (he's not on a stage he is right there in front of someone and if you are honest you would admit that it takes a lot of skill - if you arent youw ill just call him names and show what an ass you are)? Makes sense to me  uh, not.

Do you feel this way about all magicians or just Blaine?

Regarding catching the bullet in the teeth, Blaine wrote a book, that I havent read much of yet, where in teh beginning it mentions a French illusionist from way back in the day that does something similar but way more far out because he does it while in an actual duel, then instead of shootng back at the guy he shoots at a building and makes it bleed.

Oh and Houdini did not do the thing that Blaine is doing right now. Houdini is awesome but it's not the same at all.

I think he's entertaining. Whats not enjoyable about watching a pretentious twat sitting in a box getting pelted with eggs and stones? :p

He used to be a pretty good magician (I vaguely remember some of his street magic stuff), now he's just a stunt man. I don't care if someone wants to risk their health and live underwater for howeverlong. I demand some real entertainment!

So, uh, yeah. Your argument kinda falls apart.I'm afraid the magic went out of the 'magic' tricks when I saw how some of the street magic was done (and found I'd guessed correctly about others).

The levitation is a trick 'targetted' at a very narrow set of people (separately filmed camera shots cut in to make it look more 'all round'), the "card you were thinking of stuck on the inside of a cafe window" trick uses a stooge inside, 'predictions' written on a card are done with a bit of pencil lead under a nail, failures of tricks (especially the ones left more to chance) are left on the cutting room floor) leaving the impression that the whole thing was a 100% success.

Even the ice-block survival thingy was probably a trick.

His ice-block was periodically surrounded by people chucking cold air at it, obscuring the already distorted view of the man inside with dry-ice 'smoke'. I bet he could have ducked down into an alcove below to get warm again, perhaps chaning places with a double until the next 'cooling gang' intervention.

I'll have to admit that what was done (ice, pole, box, etc) were feats, even if subtle tricks were used to extend a fairly impressive duration into a rediculously long one, but he is an illusonist aspiring to some sort of 'human endurance beatification', unlike David Copperfield who is a pure illusionist (with maybe a few dillusons of grandeur, but very little that isn't contained within the concept of illusionist) and Harry Houdini who was a pure escapologist (armed with just the elements of illusion necessary to accomplish such feats).

In fact, I'd class Tommy Cooper as a better entertainer than Blaine. After accidentally stumbling[1] into the 'incompetant magician' role, he made it his own. And that despite the fact that (footnote 1 aside) he was actually very accomplished in 'straight' illusions.

Blaine has some talent, which I respect, but unfortunately a far larger ego than that talent can support.

[1] An early (serious) magic show went disasterously wrong, but he got a lot of laughs out of it, so made that his own style and carried it on to the day he died. On stage. On live TV.

I did not see him do the ice trick, but there are ways to trick it and well leave the ice during the stunt, was the ice suspended or anything in the air? or under water, if not i doubt blaine was in it for 3 days.

I don't take any magic tricks as anything more than just that - tricks. Of course the "magic" goes out of it when you know the trick. But you have to enjoy the elegance of some. Or when you know the point at which the coin is palmed (for example) and yet can't even spot it when you slow down a video playback. DB's street-magic doesn't survive that, though, for me. YMMV.

His general personality (ie a big ego) has no relevance to me because it doesn't affect my enjoyment of watching him perform. Then again, most people seem to care about celebrities and their personalities and I really don't care about that either.Having no longer any basic enjoyment, I find that the unfavourable talent:ego ratio. And I wouldn't equate personality with ego. If anything, he has a bad personality:ego ratio too...
