How many posts before you are a serious poster?

Verdigroth

Just out of mild curiosity as I cruise the topics. How many posts does it take for someone to be considered a regular poster? I am guessing 650-1000 yeah that is a big gap but somewhere around there. Or is it the quality of ones post. Does being a master debator make you a more serious poster? Just curious.

5,000 posts, unless you're really good.

The only poster I regularly noticed who was well under 1,000 was Nicollo Medici.

The key for you is to get enough posts to be known a little bit, and then pine about 'the good old days'. It's rare these days to see an early 2003 nation

Do you mean before you're a regular, recognised as a regular, or simply a serious debator?

I'd say you're a regular after a couple of months of haunting the forums.

It can take anything from a single to infinitly many posts, before people start recognising you.. People tend to recognise gibbering idiocy a lot faster than coherent thought. You may wish to keep that in mind if you're seeking fame.

It only takes one serious post to be a serious poster.

Are you asking about seriousness or regularity???
Regularity i would say 1000 but you can stop there, the best have gone on to bigger nd better things, except Eutrusca.

Seriousness
I am very really serious on anything but i have my times and then these times are filled with the odd brain explosions with nonsensequal jibberish or the pun that no one gets.

But i am great.

I think you just need to be as profane (but not curseful) here as you are IRL, and make sure you get the buzz, and people will pay more attention to you. As a "regular poster" wouldn't that also include your frequency? Some people take YEARS to get anywhere on postcount, it would seem.
Corneliu, for example, is a terrible, TERRIBLE debater, but he's got brand - two nicks AND a maneuver named after him! He's seriously famous here.

Well, I was serious from my first post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8821080&postcount=117) onwards. But I don't think most other people here realised that until waaay into the piece.

I'd say about 2000 and you start being known to people. But it varies from person to person, and with individual conduct.

There's some corroboration on that, ask The Cat-Tribe.

Besides, i'm fairly sure people already knew it. It was the brand that hadn't been applied. Or maybe it had, but, meh. He's earned it, in spades.

if you are just wanting to be taken seriously in a thread (as opposed to being remembered) you only need about 100. enough to show you are probably not someone's puppet (easy to tell by the constant flamebait) and that you are going to stay to defend your points.

yeah

serious posts are read and not commented on. if you want to be engaged, you have to troll. people arent interested in a true serious discussion, they only respond to the easy points made by attention whores and trolls.

that makes it very not worth putting effort into a post.

Number of posts is unimportant and misleading; have you seen some of the shameless post-logging threads in the spam forum?

I'm suspicious of anyone who places a 'credibility barrier' on an arbitrary number of posts (usually a multiple of 1000 and always conveniently below their personal total)

It also makes a difference if the nation primarily posts in General or is an avid participant in the other sections of the game.

In my opinion, it's all a bit pompous and pathetic.

The jolt post rankings are the only official markers and they're just a bit of fun.

Depends on what you mean by serious. If you want to be remembered for intelligence, it takes many many many posts. If you want to be remembered for humor, it takes a lot of spam posts, or a few quality ones. If you want to be remembered for something else, think of something obnoxious to do and then do it.

<-- i think i've got it covered by now ;) :D

personally its a mix of number of posts, quality, memorability, defining features, time spent... but seeing how number of posts = greater memorability and time spent, i guess a rule of thumb for me would be a regular poster is anyone between 1000 to 2000 posts. 5,000 sets em up as a real regular/serious poster, i guess :)

Post counts are misleading. Most of my posts don't get deleted because they are done in NS and II, maybe a 3rd here in General.
Czardas
02-05-2006, 13:25
Post-count is irrelevant.

It takes a mix of intelligence, debating skill, and overall post quality compounded with regular forum attendance, even if not constant posts. Therefore I may well respect someone with 700 posts more than someone with 14,000 simply due to the fact that the first is a reasonable, intelligent debator and/or good roleplayer while the second is a spammer.

I'm not referring to any specific examples here. Really.

I can read a 600-page novel in a day and remember the basic outlines of the plot and maybe some of the blurbs on the back cover, does that count?

Also, I used to be capable of incredibly fast typing, but the index finger of my dominant hand was injured, leaving me to rely more and more on #3.

sure, I could do that, I read one in about 6 hours once, the problem is that I don't have hours on end to read anymore :(

It takes 2 days because I only really have a few hours at most to devote to reading time, the rest are taken up with cooking, cleaning, working, taking care of my kids, homeschooling, being my husband's agent, teaching, planning, volunteering, posting on NSG, and you know like bathing and sleeping.

I finish most books in the course of a flight (I spend a lot of time on planes). Most of the books are less than 300 pages and the flights are usually 3 hours or under. I never thought of it as speed reading though.

I finish most books in the course of a flight (I spend a lot of time on planes). Most of the books are less than 300 pages and the flights are usually 3 hours or under. I never thought of it as speed reading though.
yeah, maybe everyone around me just reads really slowly.... it takes them a week or more to finish a book.

I used to read faster, I read Beowulf (a very short 700 page excerpt) in like an hour once, although I didn't pick up a lot, I got enough to get an A on the test, which was nice.

I'm another in the 'didn't realise I read fast' group. A friend at work is known as being a 'fast reader', because he tucks away 400-word-plus books in a week. I didn't have the heart to tell him that a 400-word book will MAYBE last me two nights...

I'm not a speed reader by any means. I average a book a week.
Sometimes I fall asleep reading-once I get that comfortable and have no other distractions, I generally lose consciousness.

And If I had 20,000 posts, I wouldnt be a serius poster. Just one with very little else to do.

It's not just a question of postcount, it's a question of reputation and 'brand name' recognition. I was well-known for wiping the floor with pretty much anyone in here back in 2003 when I was a 1k-2k postcount 'noob'. You will find there are a few people out there who have an excellent grasp of certain subjects and are capable of making an eloquent argument...but don't have much time to spend here, so their postcounts are not impressive. Then there are those with massive postcounts, but who evidently skipped grammar classes.

I agree with your original point. Post counts mean little. What counts I think is the effort that people put into posting. I don't mind the occasional grammar or spelling error (I make many), but I do mind when you can barely read a post. I am not amused by the "we're not in school" response. Last I checked, I would get laughed out of the office if I sent an email that looked like some of these posts. I also find the people who parrot talking points of various groups rather than adding a new view or showing the result of research on the subject. I don't see how it helps to hear Bush is great or Bush is the devil over and over.

When you don't care about how many posts you have anymore, but post thoughtfully and amusingly on the boards, you're a serious poster.

The top guy has also been around since 2001 and spends most of his time on the spam forum, which is a mindless activity requiring almost no mental exercise. You, on the other hand, have 9,687 well-thought-out, long, and highly involved posts (and counting), which is commendable. I think quality should outrank quantity if one wants to find "serious" posters. If someone has a million posts of nonsensical dribble, what logic would give that person a higher status over someone who has one or two truly insightful posts. As far as recognition goes, naturally the more prolific types are bound to do better; but I do not think it has very much to do with being a serious poster.

Hey! As Jocabia said... you are not only known, but much appreciated by those who have interest in what you have to say!

Okay - maybe you don't get lauded in spam threads, but that's because those who would sing your praises usually don't DO 'spam threads'.

Also, for some reason, no one particularly feels like commenting on Jack.
The only reason i brought it up is because of the White House's reaction.
That's quite telling.

They are playing it smart this time. Admitting he might have been around more just in case someone manages to discover more meetings.

Damned right, damage control.
BTW, some threads are all about timing.
And the right bump in the right hip.

*shrug* Don't really care about long running threads actually I was just surprised this has stuck around this long. Anyway Bush needs some better advisors real fast and he needs to change the direction of his policy making. If he can do that he may be able to save his presidency from taking the worst president in history books. But knowing his stupidity he probably won't.

He damns everyone he touches.
Of course, many of them already were, and it's just a matter of reinforcement ...

Hmmm I could think of a few rivers he needs to visit. Maybe we should send him to go hang with OBL. Take em both out with one cruise missile at least he would go out a hero.

The river Styx, first and foremost.
If he wanted a hero's death, he could've miscalc'd on that "Mission Accomplished" photo fiasco on flightdeck and got impaled by one of the com antennae.

I was under the impression he wasn't actually flying the jet. Fighter pilots aren't stupid enough to dump a plane no mater what their politics are. Though I kinda wished some of the bases would have been shelled during some of the presidential visits or those of the SecDef maybe when there were no extra flaks they would have realized how important armor is.

Uhm ...
if ... he ... was ... flying ... the ... jet ... he ... 'chuted ... outta ... then ... who ... was ... there ... to ... land ... it ...?

You know, the photo op that helped emphasize his ... as Guy LeDouche would say, "bulging profits"

Seriously, it was pretty bad.

I'd just got established, too... then, like an idiot, I moved to the US.

I had about a thousand posts, I think.... mostly about Wicca, of all things...

Yeah - both of those, because I moved into the fundie heartland...

But, I was rather more thinking of the fact that my relocation means I left my CD collection in the UK (That's like, 500 albums...) and spent a couple of years getting all the stuff sorted out over here, which left me without basic amenities like... an internet connection.

Hell, in this godless backwater, I didn't even get DSL till about September of this last year...

I'm thinking that my DSL might be the actual difference between the few thousand posts I remember having... and the sudden 10,000+ that I recently noticed I had...

I don't have to wait five minutes for the page to refresh anymore...

Ah - the same thing that causes trouble for men the world over... the feminine wiles of a Georgia girl...

She came and lived with me in the UK for a while, and then, she needed to relocate back to here... :(

I gotta go to sleep. I hope that works out for ya, Grave.
I can relate - my wife's in Anchorage, so we're factoring in more computer and phone time for our relationship (yay ... :( )

Funny thing, usually this time of night i can expect to see "Girls Gone Wild" commercials.
NOT TONIGHT.
"Guys Gone Wild"!!!!
Well, for me.

No... she's a Georgia girl, and they can't seem to leave the nest for long... :) I'm more of a Gypsy spirit, so it's far less important to me WHERE my 'walls' are... although I did lament leaving my all my music 4000 miles to the East of me... :(

(Yep - somewhere in the UK, someone is probably listening to my signed copy of "ADIOS"... waaahh!)

Why should it matter if we're "serious" posters or not? Isn't it all just a bit of fun? Heh. (sorry)

*cue random telling-off*:p

5,000 posts, unless you're really good.

The only poster I regularly noticed who was well under 1,000 was Nicollo Medici.

The key for you is to get enough posts to be known a little bit, and then pine about 'the good old days'. It's rare these days to see an early 2003 nation
You better watch out, I am getting really close to that.

No. This chair is really comfy.

That really sucks. I'd obviously noticed that he hadn't been on the forums much, but I kept forgetting to check his nation to see if it was still alive.
