Mexico set to legalize personal amounts of pot, cocaine, heroin!

Hey this sounds like a great idea!! I first thought what the hell could the Mexican government be thinking. But then I thought about it. This is a brilliant move. What better way to reduce crime then to legalize drugs! Figure half or more of the criminals are for drug violations. Why not legalize it and reduce your prison population and see a sharp decrease in crime.

Another thing I thought of with the illegal immigration issue over our heads right now. What better way to kill two birds with one stone. Why doesn't the US set up a citizen trade program with Mexico! The US could dump off our addicts and drug criminals and we can do a 1 for 1 trade with the Mexicans for workers? I mean we could allow all the illegals to become citizens(the ones that work hard) and can trade em for our druggies? Anyone else think this is a brilliant plan?

I can't say that it is. It's kind of like just treating the symptoms and not the problem. It'll just come back to bite you in the ass.

What better way to reduce crime than to make it legal?

I mean, if nothing is illegal, then you've got a 0% crime rate by default!

You'll have NOBODY in prison! EVER!

It's the most progressive political philosophy ever! It's so progressive, it's regressive! Back to social chaos!

Did this really need another thread so quickly after the first one (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=480009)? ;)

Mines with a twist though. Plus I can't be bothered to troll on these forums everyday to see every topic posted. :)

I gots a question.

Legalise, or decriminalise?

Becuase everyome pitched a fit when Canada "legalised pot" (decriminalised up to 10 grams, when Michigan has had up to 100 grams decriminalised for years)

Decriminalize. I don't know why the US is complaining. Possession of small quantities of certain drugs is already not a crime in many states, plus they hardly do anything to stop addiction and drug dealing in their territory. They only go after the small fish. The new Mexican law will allow punishment to focus in big time dealers and not on addicts, who can be identified and help better. It will also make it much harder for police to plant small amounts of drugs to then ask you for money.

Contrary to the OP I don't see any evidence that this will lead to total decriminalization or legalization of drugs, which hasn't been suggested anywhere.

Drug addiction is a problem, yes, but there are rational ways to manage it. Prohibition did nothing to cure alcoholism, but was wonderful for the alcohol smuggling business.

Thank you for the clarification.
