Colbert or Stewart?

From the recent thread about Colbert's comments on President Bush, I got the impression that the general opinion is that Colbert is the funniest guy on TV, outside of Jon Stewart.
I completely disagree, I do like the Daily Show, and I like Jon Stewart, but I think Colbert surpasses Stewart by a mile. Even when Colbert was a correspondent on the Daily Show, I thought his segments were the highlights.
Now I find myself skipping the Daily Show while I never miss the Colbert Report. I think that Stewart does take himself a little to seriously now, and while he is funny and sarcastic, he is not the unapologetic smartass that Colbert is.
So who is with me? Who else thinks Colbert outshines Stewart?
The poll is public so I can see who has good taste and who has better taste.

The fact that Colbert's show revolves around one joke is starting to get old. Colbert also takes the same joke too far sometimes. Though I liked him playing the asian man who likes tea.

Stewart is funny, but he does not make the same kind of random jokes that Colbert does. Colbert i think is a bit funnier, even though i think they are both hilarious.
Its funny how Colbert is in love with himself. Thats just makes his show that much better...

That is a character, not a joke, and I think it opens up more jokes than the straight man that Stewart portrays, especially when they do interviews or bring in David Cross to be that over-the-top liberal.

I think the difference is that Stewart (my preference, but only by a slim margin) goes after the media primarily and is political second--that gives him broader range. Colbert is trapped a bit by the fact that he's exaggerating people who are already caricatures--there aren't as many places to go with that, though I have to say that he's absolutely aced that cahracter.

I'm a fan of Stephen Colbert and have thought that he was hilarious in everythign I have seen him in (Strangers with Candy being my favorite of all), and always looked forward to his segments on the Daily Show, but I still find Stewart better.

Stewart is a close, close 2nd.
The thing is, Colbert is a 'character' (I think......) so he can do a whole whack of crazy shit that Stewart can't pull off. And Colbert can do ridiculous segements, Stewart is kinda restricted to serious(?) stories.
Who's the oddball who voted O'Reilley?

In the old days on the Daily Show, it was because they didn't know who he was, and he submarined them. Now, I think it's because he's hot and they figure a weird interview still gets them face time with a desirable demographic. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgYZ11pIGU4&search=colbert%20pnac). Bill Kristol of PNAC fame found that out the hard way.

Stewart isn't limited to a character, so he has more versatility. Colbert may be a bit limited by his character, but he utilizes it so well that it doesn't even seem like a restriction.
It's a very close race, but I think Colbert takes it by a hair. He's got the balls to bring his unrelenting character to the president, not 10 feet away. His congressional interviews are always great, complete with Hannityesque loaded questions. When he's interviewing a liberal, he can go after them directly, after the right indirectly, and the "O'Reillys" through his "self" depreciative cracks. When he's actually interviewing a conservative, his triple revesed psychology swipes hit his guest hard, ie. "Are you against gays getting driver's liscenses as well?" That takes balls. And that's The Word.

I've never been much of a 'ranker,' never seemed to be much of a point. I like Stewart, I like Colbert, I don't know that there is value in 'deciding' who I like more. They have a different schtick, both of which I find funny and they're on the same channel, so I can watch both.
So, now that I've crawled up my own ass...
I've liked Stewart since way back, when he was hosting short lived shows. I saw him do an interview with a spacy Jennifer Tilly that was hillarious-I saw him on a syndicated talk show do one of the best fake-out sequences ever.
I've only come across Colbert in Strangers with Candy where he was funny as hell and then The Daily Show where he had a nice dead pan. I always thought he was sticking around to take over the show if Stewart ever moved into a network show (something I hope never happens, while it would be great for his paycheck I think it would end up being stiffling. Maybe Bill Mahr can talk him out of it.)

That's because he bitched the press around a good bit as well--they deserved it, no question, but they decide what's news, and having a comic dickslap you about the job you did before the Iraq war isn't news to them, I guess.

After I wrote that I went to check, I only saw something in the Chicago Tribune that was, at best, assinine...
Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central had a difficult act to follow, coming after the president and Bridges. He was very hard on the president, with back-handed compliments like "The greatest thing about this man is he's steady. You know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened Tuesday."
I sensed a lot of uneasiness in the audience during Colbert's routine. It would make Republican partisans uneasy for obvious reasons.
But I also had the sense that Colbert's toughness on Bush made people squirm because it raised that age-old question that goes back to the republic's start. How do you criticize the president without disrespecting the presidency?
Then there's the human dimension. Here's a comedian dissing a man non-stop in front of the subject's wife. The president kept a smile on his face, mostly, but he had to at times be seething. It must've been like the Coretta Scott King funeral all over again.
Too bad the impersonator had already left the stage. It would have been good to hear the president's "true" thoughts during the Colbert performance.
That's all I really found, though to be fair I didn't look to hard. I guess it would be pretty hard to write, "Last night, our industry got its ass handed to it by a comedian..."
Though this was from a link from your Crooks and Liars link from someone who works at an ABC affiliate-
Steven Colbert gave us all in the press a Jonathan Swift kick in the pants, and he did it playing the fool. He depantsed the whole lot, it was a "Come to Jesus" moment as a lot of Southerners like to say. And I just have to extend my admiration his direction for the courage it took. Bravo. Applause. And some gratitude, too.
From here (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chris-durang/ignoring-colbert-part-tw_b_20130.html)
So I wonder what the impact will be. Will it be Stewart on Crossfire asking them to 'stop destroying America?' Or a drop in the pale? Sadly, I'm betting on the pale...

It's getting hard for me to choose. At first, I felt like Colbert was a one-trick pony. It was a really really good trick, but I felt like Stewart had a little more range to him. I also read the address Stewart gave at the William and Mary commencement, and that made me add an extra candle to my John Stewart shrine.
But I've really been loving the Colbert Report, and my esteem for Colbert has been growing. And then he goes and does something that I think took a ton of guts: he wasn't just "playing to the back of the house," he was playing to a house that wasn't even in the house! He was prepared to go in an deliver a WONDERFUL comic routine, knowing full well that pretty much nobody there would laugh at it. He knew that the people who would laugh were at home, watching CSPAN or whatever. He knew that he was going to piss off the fucking president, and, no matter how low your opinion of Bush, that takes some guts.
Fuck, I can't choose. Couldn't we just create some kind of Stewart-Colbert hybrid?

Not just the President--Leno did that when Clinton was Pres--Colbert went after the people who invited him, the Washington Press Corps. This was comparable to Stewart going on Crossfire and telling Carlson and Carville that they were hurting America, only more so. I still put Stewart up top, because I think he has greater range, but Colbert is really fucking good at what he does.
