yeah thats pretty much it in a nutshell, we have had a number of league cups but the closest we got to a league title was in 1975 when Liverpool beat us by ONE POINT to secure the league....man we had a good squad back then, Stanley Bowles, Dave Thomas and Frank Mc Lintock.

I don't think either will return tbh.

Owens bolt that goes through his fracture wasn't the right size nor fitted correctly, so his bone hasn't healed correctly.

Rooney? They had a table of high profile metatarsel injuries on Match of the Day (football highlights programme) and the shortest time for recovery was 9 weeks. However, they were pretty much all 3rd and 5th metatarsel, whereas Rooney has fractured his 4th, which is a secondary metatarsel as it is supported byt the 3rd and 5th.

Defoe hasn't scored enough recently to make me have much faith in him, I would personally prefer Darren Bent. Crouch could be interesting but I'm always a little worried about his finishing...he wasn't exactly impressive for Liverpool in recent weeks... his miss on Saturday was a little shocking...

I like Italian and English teams, chiefly:

AC Milan
Roma
Juventus

Liverpool
Tottenham
Man U

International soccer:

1) USA (got to cheer for my sucky, overrated team)
2) Italy (way underrated... more on FIFA rankings later)
3) England

Those are the only three teams i'll cheer for this summer... the rest, blah. I suppose i'll also cheer for Spain and Holland -- perennially powerful, neither with a WC title. Maybe one will break through. Fabregas and Robben could lead them.
---------------------

FIFA's ranking are S-H-I-T W-R-O-N-G

How is USA #5? There is NO WAY IN HELL they're that good. They should be somewhere between 11th and 15th probably. They're not a bad side, but no way are they better than France, England, Italy, etc.

Germany 4, USA 1
Italy 4, Germany 1

USA is #5
Italy is #14

you've got to be kidding me.

Torres, Alonso and Luis Garcia too... they have a lot of young talent and they're going to (you heard it here first) shock Brazil in the quarterfinals.

does anyone in Europe take the FIFA rankings seriously?

here are my top 16, based on current form and, otherwise, talent. #2 through #8 are more or less interchangeable, probably. I think the Czechs are WAY, WAY overrated at #2 in the FIFA rankings:

1. Brazil
2. Italy
3. Holland
4. England
5. Argentina
6. France
7. Spain
8. Portugal
9. Czech Republic
10. Croatia
11. USA
12. Mexico
13. Sweden (bad loss at Ireland drop them a bit)
14. Denmark
15. Switzerland
16. Germany (this is a BAD/SUBPAR German side... worst time to host)

Not sure about England at #4, though you did say 2-8 are fairly interchangeable. Maybe put England at 7 or 8. Not entirely sure about Holland at 3, either. Argentina, France and Spain at 3-5, in whatever order. Holland at 6. England and Portugal at 7 and 8, whichever way round. And I'd put Germany at 10. Yes, they're not great at the moment, but they know how to play in major tournaments - everyone was writing them off before the last WC, then they reached the final.

I don't give a crap what the rankings are.

The international teams change so much more than club teams in terms of who plays, like whose on form etc, that even an over view of the last 5 games may give a false impression.

Cup competitions are too compact with the amount of games they play in a set time to allow for players to have full fitness, and qualifying games are far too spread out.

Brazil might be better, but this tournament is in Europe.

Germany got to the 2002 finals having beaten nobody. They barely got past an average USA outfit, then I think they got lucky (no phantom red cards) against Korea.

or did they beat Turkey in the semis? I forget. Either way, it was a road without victories over any traditional powers. In fact, they've not beaten one in 5+ years. But I say that without total confidence -- there won't likely be any 4-1 defeats (Italy) on their home turf. England or Sweden could do it in the round of 16... and if not England, then Holland or Argentina in the quarterfinals.

Brazil have won the World Cup in Europe before - in Sweden, I believe. Brazil beat Turkey in the semi-finals of the last one, Germany beat USA and Korea in the quarters and semis...not sure about the last 16. They had Ireland, Saudi Arabia, and someone else in their group. True, it was a favourable draw, but they were still expected to struggle.

I think you could actually do with a couple of quiet - mid table seasons to reset somewhat. It has been a pretty hectic last few years.

I moved to Bradford because my then girlfriend went to Uni there (to read Russian and French!). I ended up a few years later going to Leeds Uni.

But all this was in the late 80s

I agree about a few mid table seasons, just to get our feet steady again. Still, it'll be nice not having to worry if we're going to fold every summer. Plus we're going to need replacements for the ageing Windass and Wetherall, who can't go on forever...but who are our best players.

That's pathetic. Colchester were one of the favourites to go down this season (just like every season, in fact), and now need a point from their final game to get promoted. If they win and Southend don't, they'll be champions. And I'll be about £40 richer.

Played in Europe. There is such a difference in the economics of the game here and there that all of the good players go to Europe. Some, such as Rivaldo, come back and try to play here when they are too old and knackered for the European game.

Outside of São Paulo and Rio fotball is almost at the level of the Nationwide Conference in terms of finance, skill and organisation. There are a few big clubs not in the São Paulo Rio axis - Gremio, Internacional in Rio Grande do Sul; Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro in Minas Gerais, but that is about it.

For details this is a good English Language site about Brazillian football (http://www.futebolthebrazilianwayoflife.com/)
