May 1st Boycott

You may have heard that immigrants have called for the boycott of American goods and refusal to work, in an attempt to show the country what it would be like without immigrants.

Personally I don't see how this will work out. To me it just seems like this particular push will only hurt their cause by furthering the rift between the government and immigrants (legal or otherwise).

I'd like to know what you think on this May 1st; May Day.

I agree, as it is American industry is moving out of the country anyways so maybe the should be going back to where they came from.

It wont work. Too many scabs. Also immigrants count for an extremely small percentage of economic activity in this country. You are right, it will just cause pointless bad blood.

Europe or lets face it the World doesn’t have these problems because the countries are either too poor to need immigrants or is you’ know dedicated to helping them an all

So better treatment is something you need considering how the rest of the Earth gives them the treatment they deserve

Yes, and we should sort out the sweat shops too, now that is a real problem because at least the Americanised ones have some rights whether illegal or not those stuck in Sweat shops are really getting shafted.

Ah...but are the immigrants these nations are helping illegal??? That is the main issue here, after all.

Hold on a sec...you're saying everywhere besides the U.S. treats immigrants well?

Discounting the fact that I have yet to hear vociferous complaining from legal immigrants to the U.S., the recent riots in France should be proof enough that few nations have ever effectively dealt with problems relating to immigration, illegal or otherwise.

It won't work. The right to strike is part of our set of labour laws, but they aren't American citizens and they shouldn't be here in the first place to strike. They aren't covered by our laws because they aren't American, and they aren't here legally. If they want rights, they need to fill out the paperwork like everyone else.

Just today a swarm of teenagers rampaged throught Queen Street in Auckland demanding an end to youth pay rates.
Those under 18 get paid a lower rate than adults.

Yeah, not only would it stop them complaining but if companies were forced to treat immigrants equally to other people, ie. equal pay & security, they would have no incentive to employ them over other people, so people wouldn't be able to use "They took our jobs." as valid arguments to stir up racism. Not that they wouldn't try of course...

I support the boycott. I hope people start to realize the part that immigrants play in this country and have always played. I'm not exactly sure when this elitist attitude began(though I suspect it was around the beginning of the Cold War), but personally, I welcome ayone who who wants to work and live here. As long as they pay taxes. If they want to contribute to the political system of this country(vote and such), then citizenship for immigants should be available.

The issue, to me, is not illegal immigrants(because I don't believe immigration is illegal), but under-the-table employers. These overindulged, overfed overpriviledged American businessmen profit off of the fact that these people have no legal recourse in this country. The LAST thing they want is legal immigration to be easy. They want it to remain difficultor impossible to enter this country legally and work or to become citizens. They prefer illegals.

So when I see a group of poor hoping to make a living in this country and a much smaller group of people lookng to exploit them, guess which ones make my sphincter clench tighter? Why do I sometimes feel like I'm alone in this feeling?

As a nation of immigrants, how can you make one group of people not come to America? Or is it just the tip of ice-berg, who's next?
