The Best Song Ever

"Rooster" by Alice In Chains is my favorite song ever. I don't typically listen to grunge, or mainstream rock for that matter, but this song does it for me every single time I hear it, and the lyrics are relevant to what's happening in the world today. I'll admit it's not the best melody (although still really good) but the lyrics are really something else. Here are the lyrics:

"Ain't Found A Way To
Kill Me Yet
Eyes Burn With Stinging
Sweat
Seems Every Path Leads Me To
Nowhere
Wife And Kids And Household Pet
Army Green Was No Safe Bet
The Bullets Scream To Me From Somewhere

Here They Come To Snuff The Rooster
Yeah Here Come The Rooster
You Know He Ain't Gonna Die

Walkin' Tall Machine Gun Man
They Spit On Me In My Homeland
Gloria Sent Me Pictures
Of My Boy
Got My Pills 'Gainst
Mosquito Death
My Buddy's Breathin'
His Dyin' Breath
Oh God Please Won't You Help
Me Make It Through"

I haven't seen a more realistic and harrowing portrayal of what it must have been like to fight in Vietnam, or in any war, including Iraq. Jerry Cantrell's (the guitarist) father served in vietnam, so this must be where he got the idea. What do you think?

RIP Layne Staley.

i can never pick a best song ever cuz i like so many different genres and i find tunes are incomparable across genres. and even within genres i can't decide. well my favourite drum&bass tune would be either stalker by aphrodite or racing green by high contrast. my favourite punk tune would probably be i fought the law by the clash. my favourite 'urban' (for want of a better word) tune would be URAQT by M.I.A.. my favourite 'indie' tune would be stupid and shallow by the futureheads. but then all these change on a day to day, minute to minute basis.

No-one's said Bohemian Rhapsody yet. Weird... It has to be that or Stairway to Heaven for me, although I agree taste can be temporary - and if a song's too good, it gets overplayed and loses all value, as has happened with Rhapsody.

I have a whole load of favourite songs, not just a single one. I have a favourite band and a favourite song by every band that I like, but I could never say which one is my favourite overall song of all time.
My favourite band is Blink-182, and my favourite song is Man Overboard. I love that song.

Damn, I hate this sort of choice... hm.

One of two, then I can further narrow it (possibly):
Comfortably Numb, by the Floyd; or
The Red Flag by Jim Connell....

I think it has to be The Red Flag.

The Greatest and Best Song in the World Was played by Tenacious D in response to the demand of a shiny demon who threatened to eat their souls. However, they forgot how it went, and later wrote the song "Tribute" as a tribute to the best song in the world, which they cannot remember.

That is an excellent choice.

At the moment, I would say "Karma Police", or "A Day in the Life", "Not Fade Away" by the Rolling Stones made a strong showing on the drive home.
